The White Ribbon

The White Ribbon [12/30 -- limited]

Director: Michael Haneke
Stars: Christian Friedel, Ernst Jacobi, Leonie Benesch (Full Cast)
Studio: Sony Pictures Classics

The Plot: A series of strange accidents occur in Eichwald, a small village in Protestant northern Germany, on cusp of World War I. The abused and suppressed children of the villagers seem to be at the heart of this mystery, but who is behind it?

THE BUZZ: Michael Haneke is no stranger to Cannes wins (White Ribbon earned 3 awards), but this is the first time the filmmaker has complementary Stateside love -- in the form of a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Part of me thinks this is his reward for not making another Hollywood film (his Funny Games remake fizzled, you might remember). Here's a review of the latest brutal offering from the always controversial writer-director, who really deserves his own Almodóvar-like retrospective sometime soon?

THE BUZZ: I mean, why not try your luck at releasing a vampire movie this year? Beyond the Twilight saga, even the third Underworld movie proved it could make an equal profit to its predecessors. And distributor Lionsgate, who is refining its box-office prospects to focus more on horrors and thrillers, acquired this Australian production with the intriguing premise and cast -- though I'm not sure if this one will receive a Saw-like marketing push since the studio has vowed to keep marketing expenditures at a minimum. While I am all for this movie's success, directors the Spierig Brothers could be in for a come-and-go experience similar to their first slash at American success, the underseen Undead.

Youth in Revolt

Youth in Revolt

Director: Miguel Arteta
Stars: Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Ray Liotta (Full Cast)
Studio: Dimension Films

The Plot: Like most teens, young Nick Twisp (Cera) is ruled by his libido. And from the recesses of a trailer park in Northern California, Twisp concocts a plan -- make that multiple schemes -- to lose his virginity to a local girl, the precocious Sheeni Saunders (Doubleday).

THE BUZZ: Portia Doubleday, who lost her part on "The United States of Tara" as it went to series, won the coveted (?) role as Sheeni Saunders, which could give rise to Ellen Page-like sudden fame. The young actress joins a phenomenal cast that includes Steve Buscemi, Jean Smart, and Zach Galifianakis in this year-starting comedy (originally slated for December of 2008) that is sort of like a boy version of Juno? OK, enough with the Diablo Cody references ... Michael Cera's role here should be a natural extension of the characters he's played thus far, seeing that YiR plays a bit more with teen identity and the imaginable embarrassments that come to those who try to find a place to masturbate while living with dysfunctional parents in an RV. (Is that more difficult than having a crush on your cousin? Hard to say.) Though Twisp is written as a 14 year old, I imagine his age will be blurred to be more Cera-appropriate.

Leap Year

Leap Year

Director: Anand Tucker
Stars: Amy Adams, Matthew Goode, Adam Scott (Full Cast)
Studio: Universal Pictures

The Plot: Anna (Adams) has spent four years with her boyfriend, Jeremy (Scott), without a wedding proposal. During his business trip to Dublin, Anna opts to act on Leap Day, an Irish tradition that encourages women to propose to men on the date February 29th. A re-routed plane trip, however, lands her at the door of a Welsh innkeeper (Goode), who might offer a diversion of his own.

Leap Year (2010) -- A woman (Adams) who has an elaborate scheme to propose to her boyfriend on Leap Day, an Irish tradition which occurs every time the date February 29 rolls around, faces a major setback when bad weather threatens to derail her planned trip to Dublin. With the help of an innkeeper, however, her cross-country odyssey just might result in her getting engaged.
Leap Year (2010) -- AZ Movies - Clip 3 (Flash)

THE BUZZ: Most everyone involved with this romantic comedy is way too talented to be worked into such formulaic entertainment; however, that's the very thing that could make this a not-so-bad date movie. Would it be too much to ask for an actual-real surprise ending, though? Otherwise, you've seen 98% of the story outlined in the trailer.

THE BUZZ: The presence of director Brian Levant (Are We There Yet?, and a flood of '90s family movies) suggests this one is PG all the way, eliciting a ho-hum from those of us who prefer Chan in more fantastic situations. Good thing his Chinese-language projects continue to inspire hope.

THE BUZZ: From Hell was the last Hughes Bros, movie, and that was back in 2001, a time when not every movie seemed to be adapted from a comic book or video game. 8 years later, they're back with an original screenplay, an increasingly rare occurrence these days. I'm hoping to be recovered from The Road before taking another post-apocalyptic trip, that said, if Viggo Mortensen's perilous TransAmerican trek charts with audiences, look for Warner Bros. to piggyback on the momentum and push the action angle here. This movie, and Sherlock Holmes, could be returns-to-form for producer Joel Silver, who has been taking a beating from industry watchers since he landed his last hit, V for Vendetta.

THE BUZZ: While I personally don't gravitate towards films which dramatize illness -- why not just make a documentary on the subject? -- I find the real-life efforts of John Crowley inspiring. If you're unfamiliar with the Crowley family's ordeal, watch the featurette we have online. In the meantime, I have my eye on CBS Films and their inaugural feature; next up (I think) from the company is The Back-Up Plan, the artificial insemination rom-com (what a mouthful!) starring J-Lo-Wah-Wah and Alex O'Loughlin (boing!).

Studio: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

The Plot: Beth (Bell) is a young, ambitious New Yorker who is completely unlucky in love. However, when she impulsively steals some coins from a reputed fountain of love during a whirlwind trip to Rome, she finds herself aggressively pursued by a band of suitors.

When in Rome (2010) -- ZuGuide.com - Trailer (Flash)

THE BUZZ: Spotted: Kristen Bell trying the Amy Adams approach to mainstream success, embracing a Disney-fied take on romance in NYC. What will Upper East Siders have to say about this, as well as Bell's rabid cult audience? Her fortune is shining in the Eternal City, though it's unlikely she'll ever head back to Neptune, CA for the once-promising "Veronica Mars" movie. In fact, I feel like this fantasy comedy mirrors Ms. Bell's career, since she's found luck on TV with as a guest star on "Heroes" and the titular narrator of "Gossip Girl", but she has yet to find a big-screen vehicle for her considerable success. Something tells me she might have pitched a coin or two when the cameras weren't rolling.

Stars: Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston (Full Cast)

Edge of Darkness (2010) -- Trailer for this suspense thriller starring Mel Gibson
Edge of Darkness (2010) -- MoviesTrailer.org - Trailer (Flash)

THE BUZZ: This movie radiates tension in and out! Packaged by super-producer Graham King (The Departed) right before the Screen Actor's Guild strike in 2008, Edge had trouble finding a studio, which was attributed, of course, to Mel Gibson being blacklisted by Hollywood. Not so! Said King. And then Robert De Niro backed out of the co-starring role right as filming began. To me, this is all merely early publicity for a project that doesn't fully engage me otherwise. In truth, De Niro being replaced by Ray Winstone drew my attention back to the film, and I'm primed to see how another terrific actor, Danny Huston, fits into the plot, which promises to twist until the end thanks to William Monahan, Graham King's Oscar-winning screenwriter from The Departed.
