THE BUZZ: Animation studio Blue Sky might just fulfill their promise to help Twentieth Century Fox bring Pixar-level quality to family audiences this year, as they look to resuscitate this franchise after the touchy, feely, Dr. Phil-y Ice Age: The Meltdown. (Admittedly, we are more primed for their other 2009 offering, Wes Anderson's The Fantastic Mr. Fox.) With just the teaser trailer and other shreds of evidence available, we say prepare for Scrat, and his new lady companion, to be positioned a bit toward the front and center, delivering true entertainment while they possibly distract from the revisionist history taking place.

THE BUZZ: It's not surprising that Nia Vardalos and John Corbett are reuniting for an indie romantic comedy, especially as their respective stars are in position to recapture the shine they had at the beginning of the decade. (Vardalos is fingers-crossed for a summer hit with My Life in Ruins and Corbett is double-crossies for a role in the Sex and the City sequel.) THE BUZZ: This may be your last chance to not see a Mark Duplass film, since he and the rest of his Mumblecore compatriots are going major (studio) league, which should inevitably cause a spike in the DVD rentals of Hannah Takes the Stairs, Baghead, etc. Meanwhile, I am wondering if Lynn Shelton, Humpday's director and star, will allow her road to diverge into Hollywood, or if she will align herself with the Kelly Reichardts of the movie-making world. THE BUZZ: Director David Yates is again at the helm for this sixth film, which if the book is any indication, trods into decidedly grown-up territory -- we have left Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans far behind. Good news: screenwriter Steve Kloves is back, and the newest high profile cast additions include Jim Broadbent as professor Horace Slughorn) and Helen McCrory as Draco's nefarious mum. (Don't know her? She was Cherie Blair in The Queen) The bad news? You will probably need a hug by the time the credits roll -- darkness, death and despair loom highly for our hero.

THE BUZZ: Guinea pigs are this year's chihuahua, at least on the Disney lot. Truthfully, while I am not moved by such movies, there are much worse ways to spend 90 minutes with your kids. THE BUZZ: Hmm, if anyone out there really wants to go see a super-formulaic romance that turns two likable actors into two icky characters, let me know if you truly enjoyed The Ugly Truth, whose plot is more schematic than Heigl and Butler's planned career trajectories. I'll be one theater over, watching something slightly more tolerable, like the movie version of a Disney TV show, or an ill-advised sequel.

THE BUZZ: The last time Kevin Spacey tapped into drug-addled alienation, he won an Oscar. With Shrink, Spacey's performance has helped earn the film kind-to-decent notices on the festival circuit, but we're pretty certain this one will come and go quietly during the crowded summer schedule. THE BUZZ: With no Will Smith movie set for July 2009, Adam Sandler looks to rule the season with a comedy-drama (don't say "dramedy") that I'm hoping will feature his best performance since Punch-Drunk Love. Little bits of evidence here and there, such as the presence of Oscar-winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski and a certain special event, have convinced me that Judd Apatow is looking to crack his mold and usher in a different kind of, ummmmm, masculine realness (?) for his third go-round behind the camera. Also, with Ms. Apatow and Sarah Silverman cast (in major and minor roles, respectively), maybe the director finally will learn how to fold actual-real funny women into a story.

The Cove (2009) -- In the 1960's, Richard O'Barry was the world’s leading authority on dolphin training. Day in and day out, O'Barry kept the dolphins working and television audiences smiling. But one day, that all came to a tragic end.

THE BUZZ: Louie Psihoyos's documentary stirred crowds at Sundance earlier this year, where it picked up the Audience Award during a year where the docs were particularly strong. It won the same award at the increasingly relevant Hot Docs festival in May. After you read this interview, you might see why this is -- no joke -- one of the most anticipated documentaries ever released to a wide audience.

THE BUZZ: Horror fans are primed for Marcus Dunstan's directorial debut, after he and writing partner Patrick Melton have accrued a fanbase for their Feast saga and their contributions to the second-half of the Saw legacy. Too bad The Collector isn't getting the promotional push it seems to deserve, even if it turns out to be little more than a Chex Mix of horror and thriller set-ups. I hear the child-in-jeopardy angle might make someone such as Michael Haneke proud.

THE BUZZ: We're going to credit the success of Let the Right One In as one of the reasons Focus Features has opted to give Chan-wook Park (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance) perhaps his widest exposure in the U.S. to date. Yes, the movie itself was a hit in Park's native South Korea, and it did win a Jury Prize at Cannes this year, but LtROI has primed indie horror audiences for more alternatives to Bella and Edward. One request: No remakes.
