Director: Peter Berg Stars: Will Smith, Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: An apathetic, hard-living superhero (Smith) who has fallen out of favor with the public is approached by a public relations professional (Bateman) who has ideas as to how he can repair his client's image.
THE BUZZ: What we keep thinking about here is the fact that Peter Berg, despite being one of the most versatile people working in Hollywood, has never directed a blockbuster. Until now, right? Right, but only because this is a Will Smith starrer; the man who hasn't had a flop since the year 2000 is one of only a few actors who could have greenlighted this project. (With most any other actor, Hancock would be a January release and, at best, a dicey superhero prospect.) But the question remains: Will Hancock hit the heights of Tony Stark and, to a slightly lesser extent, Bruce Banner? With Smith in anti-hero mode, a hard-fought PG-13 rating, and a definite lack of buzz, we're wondering if this might underwhelm. Maybe that why Sony has all but suppressed the relationship between Will and Charlize's characters here. Director: Jonathan Levine Stars: Josh Peck, Ben Kingsley, Olivia Thirlby (Full Cast) Studio: Sony Pictures Classics The Plot: New York City, 1994: College-bound pot dealer Luke Shapiro (Peck) trades weed for therapy sessions with Dr. Jeffrey Squires (Kingsley) while developing a crush on his psychiatrist's step-daughter (Thirlby).
THE BUZZ: Chances are if you came of age in the early 90s, The Wackness is already on your radar, thanks to the buzz Jonathan Levine's second movie has built since its Sundance debut back in January. First there was the report of Ben Kingsley macking on co-star Mary-Kate Olsen (only while cameras rolled), then came the ire-raising purchase by Sony Pictures Classics that preceded the first trailer. (First Showing has the second trailer online.) Personally, I'm primed for a second look at the film, which has been trimmed by about 15 minutes since Sundance; I found it to be warm, honest, highly stylized, and truly concerned with the relationships between its characters. Josh Peck, who will reunite with co-star Olivia Thirbly in Safety Glass later this year (we think), might just become the new It Boy with his sleepy, toned-down performance. And maybe if Wackness strikes, we'll get to see Levine's oft-delayed debut All the Boys Love Mandy Lane this summer. Director: Scott Prendergast Stars: Scott Prendergast, Lisa Kudrow, Teri Garr (Full Cast) Studio: Regent Releasing The Plot: Despite being somewhat inept in most every way imaginable, Salman (Pendergrast) looks to help his sister-in-law (Kudrow) raise her two sons while her husband is fighting in Iraq. To do so, he takes a humiliating job with a failing Internet company as their mascot -- a giant, blue, cartoon-like character who has to hand out fliers all day.
THE BUZZ: Okay, an average-looking guy in an ill-conceived blue costume is shaping up to be my summer superhero, and though he won't generate the same attention as Will's Smith's Hancock this holiday weekend, doesn't he seem way more entertaining? Lookee here for more background on Scott Prendergast's trials and tribs as a first-time writer/director/star, and know that the festival circuit adopted this comedy as one of the best films of the year. Director: Terry Kinney Stars: Matthew Broderick, Virginia Madsen, Alan Alda (Full Cast) Studio: IFC Films The Plot: A Chicago journalist (Broderick) suffering from memory loss takes leaves from his job and returns to his rural hometown, where he bonds with his Alzheimer's-impaired uncle Rollie (Alda) and his old flame (Madsen). Quickly a plan is hatched for the trio to head to a memorabilia convention in the city, where Rollie hopes to sell a rare baseball card that has gained the attention of local ne'er-do-wells intent on scheming the old man out of a potential fortune.
THE BUZZ: You might best remember actor-turned-director Terry Kinney as Tim McManus, the prison employee who conceptualized "Oz," and it looks like Diminished Capacity's chances of raising his profile as a filmmaker are rather slim. Like so many other promising features at Sundance earlier this year, DC wound up at IFC Films with little fanfare soon after the festival ended. Reviews all seem to state that the story's forced quirkiness sinks the otherwise intriguing pairing of Broderick and Alda (who don't get the highest marks for their respective performances, by the way), although the script saves its worst nuances and tics for its supporting characters -- so you might not be treated to the best work by Bobby Cannavale and Dylan Baker, either. Director: Guillermo del Toro Stars: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: When the mythical world engages their campaign to take over the Earth, the U.S. government reaches out to the only department staffed to handle the potential catastrophe: The Bureau for Paranormal Research, who once again turns to the demon hero Hellboy (Perelman) and his teammates to stop a merciless dictator from carrying out his plan.
THE BUZZ: Here's a thought: If 2008 is the year of the superhero, and Universal recently turned the dark-horse candidate Wanted into a hit, then maybe HBII will warrant a third installment, which has been the subject of rumors over the past several weeks. (How Guillermo del Toro would find the time to complete the trilogy, however, is an unsolvable mystery, since The Hobbit two-parter should have him sequestered away until 2012.) Though I am still unsure if the beefed-up crew from the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense will best their 2004 debut, there's no doubt that GdT's creative vision will make for the best-looking comic-book adaptation to date. I just wish Universal didn't feel the need to reveal so much of the movie in its series of trailers, previews, and TV spots; I feel like I watched the entire movie while sitting at the bar last week. I'd rather spend time nerding out at the movie's official production site, a home to all the minute details involved in bringing Mike Mignola's comic-book world (and underworld) to life. Director: Eric Brevig Stars: Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: A geologist (Fraser) on a special mission with his son (Hutcherson) discovers the entrance into a previously unseen world.
THE BUZZ: All of the sudden, Brendan Fraser is the go-to guy for family entertainment, what with Journey 3D, Inkheart (another New Line release, like Journey), and The Mummy 3 all due out within a year of one another. But released so close to Mummy 3, another father-and-son-in-peril adventure, even Fraser might have trouble distinguishing his characters from one another. Here's a hint: This is the one that takes a classic tale by Jules Verne and runs it through a computer software suite. Director: Brian Robbins Stars: Eddie Murphy, Elizabeth Banks (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: Tiny aliens pilot a spacecraft that takes the form of a human (Murphy), while the captain of the ship jeopardizes his crew and their mission to save their planet when he falls for beautiful earthling (Banks).
THE BUZZ: We interrupt Elizabeth Banks's apparent temporary insanity to pose this question: What part of Pluto Nash did studios not recall when Murphy's name came up for another sci-fi comedy? We're guessing it wasn't the $4 million gross. Not that Murphy fans care, they turned Norbit into a number one hit. Apparently the more characters he plays in a movie, the more it makes. So, maybe he should've played ten more in this one. Message Boards: How to enjoy this movie..... | If they do a sequel Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews | |||||

THE BUZZ: From the look and feel of things here, Jason Freeland's LA story sounds like Cloverfield with a pot-dealing realtor as the monster who preys upon cute young things. The nicest thing we've heard about the drama? That Freeland throws a curve most every time you think you know what's going to happen next. And the worst? That at the end of the movie, you feel like you are a movie exec on the receiving end of a pitch. Message Boards: the ending | Was Nathan raped? Director: Austin Chick Stars: Josh Hartnett, Naomie Harris, Adam Scott (Full Cast) Studio: First Look International The Plot: Set in the summer of 2001, a Internet-startup guru (Hartnett) struggles to keep his company in the black and his personal life together.
THE BUZZ: Is Josh Hartnett the new Ben Affleck? Austin Chick's follow up to XX/XY sure makes him seem like something of a has-been -- maybe that's why he's the perfect pick to portray a dot-com millionaire whose life is about to fall apart in the days before 9/11. Ugh, I can already hear his voice-overs about harnessing the power of the Web for wealth and fame. At least this one has a supporting cast that includes Naomie Harris and Andre Royo (Bubbles from "The Wire"). And Bowie! Message Boards: What happened? | Just watched it.....eh! Director: T. Sean Shannon Stars: Spencer Breslin, Cuba Gooding Jr., Nikki Blonsky (Full Cast) Studio: City Lights Pictures The Plot: A prematurely balding teenager (Breslin) tries to adapt to life at his new high school, where he faces incessant teasing and harassment.
THE BUZZ: Writer-comedian T. Sean Shannon gets major support from "Saturday Night Live" cast members of the past and present with his directorial debut, a comedy that pairs Spencer Breslin with Nikki Blonsky (in her first role since Hairspray) as the duo faces the evil-doers of their high school. Here's the trailer, but good luck on finding an official site for this one. But I understand the movie will roll out beyond NYC/LA in the coming weeks. THE BUZZ: If this was the year 2000 -- even better, 2002 -- Harvey Weinstein would have positioned director Gillian Armstrong's fictionalized Houdini biopic for a lavish autumn theatrical run, where it would have picked up a Golden Globe or two, and perhaps an Oscar nomination for one (or both) of the film's leads, whose careers were in ripening at this point in time. Back then, we had yet to see either The Illusionist or The Prestige, two films that respected their subject and their audiences. Director: Kari Skogland Stars: Ellen Burstyn, Christine Horne, Ellen Page (Full Cast) Studio: Vivendi Entertainment The Plot: Resistant to her son's plan to place her in a nursing home, the fiesty Hagar Shipley (Burstyn) takes off on a solo trip to revisit some of her youthful haunts; flashbacks provide glimpses of her early life as an equally determined free spirit.
THE BUZZ: While I think Ellen Page's appeal is the main reason this movie earned a limited theatrical release (Juno portrays a girl in love with Hagar's youngest son, played by Transamerica's Kevin Zegers), The Stone Angel, as you might expect, belongs to Ms. Burstyn and her character's unwillingness to succumb to the ravages of aging. A targeted release in this female-positive time for movies should boost Angel's fortunes, and I imagine this one will rake it in on DVD. Director: Brad Anderson Stars: Woody Harrelson, Emily Mortimer, Ben Kingsley (Full Cast) Studio: First Look International The Plot: A detective (Kingsley) hones in on a seemingly innocent American couple (Harrelson and Mortimer) aboard a train headed to Russia from China.
THE BUZZ: Don't let the cheesy trailer that's been floating around online dissuade you from checking out the new film from Brad Anderson (The Machinist); most reviews state Anderson delivers more than familiar plot twists as his story winds its way from Asia to Europe. (So, just so you officially know, the dead body, stashed drugs, and vodkas shots here are supposed to represent that crumbled Soviet empire.) Though I, like you, mainly want to know exactly what Kate Mara and Eduardo Noriega are up to, and whether or not Mortimer's character is shady or just fierce. Director: Kirk De Micco Stars: Andy Samberg, Stanley Tucci, Jeff Daniels (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: Ham III (Samberg), the grandson of the first chimp astronaut, is blasted off into space by an opportunity-seeking senator (Tucci). Soon, the fun-loving chimp has to get serious about the mission at hand: Rid a far-away planet of their nefarious leader (Daniels). Fortunately for Ham III, two of his simian peers (Hines and Warburton) are along for the ride.
THE BUZZ: It's not the premise or the voice cast that bugs me; it's the unimaginative title that gets under my skin and makes me itch. And even though the atmosphere is right for another family film now that Kung Fu Panda's glory has faded, Fox seems to have abandoned this mission with a barely there marketing campaign (which included slapping stickers on a million Dole bananas and partnering with Hardee's, home of the Thickburger). Director: Adam McKay Stars: Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: Two spoiled adult men (Ferrell and Reilly) are pulled into a new sibling rivalry after their respective single parents get hitched.
THE BUZZ: The formula didn't work for The Brothers Solomon last fall, but Will Arnett + Will Forte ≠ John C. Reilly and the is-he-or-is-he-not-still-popular Will Ferrell, who wrote this screenplay with director Adam McKay (he of Anchorman and Talladega Nights fame). The red band trailer proves this will be much better than Semi-Pro and Walk Hard, and while this movie marks the end of Ferrell and McKay's three-picture deal with Sony, we all know that Anchorman 2 will be made at the studio. But there's still a chance that Ferrell could go down with this one, just like fellow "SNL"ers Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers experienced with their most recent projects. Director: Julian Jarrold Stars: Matthew Goode, Patrick Malahide, Hayley Atwell (Full Cast) Studio: Miramax Films The Plot: Charles Ryder (Goode), an officer in the British Army during WWII, looks back on his pre-war dalliances with his Oxford schoolmate, Sebastian Flyte (Whishaw), and his equally beguiling sister, Julia (Atwell), at their family's lavish estate.
THE BUZZ: A one-two knockout punch in the form of writers Jeremy Brock (The Last King of Scotland) and Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones's Diary) should help director Julian Jerrold's follow up to Becoming Jane become an actual-real hit and not merely a forgettable exercise in period filmmaking. Look for rising star Matthew Goode to tap into his Match Point experience for this update of Evelyn Waugh's scandalous drama -- a sureshot moneymaker and shoe-in for a lavish award campaign later on this year from Miramax, a studio which has recovered beautifully from the post-Weinstein era. Basking in the critical- and popular-acclaim glow alongside Goode will be his charming co-stars, Ben Whishaw, who captivated European audiences in Perfume: The Story of a Murderer's lead role, and Hayley Atwell, who will try and out pout Keira Knightley in The Duchess later this year. Director: Chris Carter Stars: David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Billy Connolly (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: The case of a missing FBI agent causes Fox Mulder (Ducovny) and Dana Scully (Anderson) to assume their former roles and try to solve the mystery. Assisting them on the case is a troubled priest (Connolly) whose psychic visions lead them to their first clue, as well as a pair of seasoned agents (Amanda Peet and Alvin "Xzibit" Joiner).
THE BUZZ: With two trailers, a few TV spots, a handful of reactivated fans sites, and kisses all over from The NY Times, it's rather amazing that so little has been revealed at X-F 2's storyline. We all know by now about the movie's standalone nature, and that it's an experiment to see if a one-off model could be used for additional films down the road. With just a handful of days left before we unearth the mysteries of I Want to Believe (during Comic-Con no less!), let's take a moment to celebrate the ever-patient and always-mysterious Chris Carter, who has created hype (like that werewolf sighting during the first days of shooting) and deflected rumors for what seems like the better part of the current decade in order to bring all the essential X elements together: the suddenly busy Scully; the I-hate-Vancouver Mulder (note: both Scully and Mulder have said they'd return for more movies); and a shooting script that was kept locked away and under surveillance for the duration of the production. Maybe Chris Carter could teach Steven Spielberg a thing or two about security.
