Director: Dennis Dugan Stars: Adam Sandler, John Turturro, Emmanuelle Chriqui (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: A Mossad agent (Sandler) orchestrates a scenario that will allow him to move to New York City and reinvent himself as a hairstylist.
THE BUZZ: Sounds like a Sacha Baron Cohen concept to us, but really this is a comedy triangle formed by Sandler, his go-to director Dennis Dugan, and He Who Makes It Funny, Judd Apatow, who wrote Zohan with Sandler and Robert Smigel. Sure, the premise sounds wafer thin and potentially offensive to both secret agents and hair stylists, but, hey, is that a Mariah Carey sighting? Expect the comedy here to go from gross-out to soft-and-matured in three acts. Message Boards: Officially, the worst movie I've ever seen | This movie is way funnier if... Director: Sergei Bodrov Stars: Tadanobu Asano, Amadu Mamadakov, Khulan Chuluun (Full Cast) Studio: Picturehouse Entertainment The Plot: Temudgin, a young Mongol boy, endures years of poverty and torment before forming one of the most powerful empires in human history; as Genghis Khan, the leader extends the Mongol Empire from East Asia to Central Europe -- creating a legacy that lasts for over 150 years.
THE BUZZ: Naw, this isn't a rehash of Nomad, that strange, Jay Hernandez-starring confection Sergei Bodrov co-directed a couple years ago; Mongol is an entirely new curiosity. Already called out by watchdogs who aren't cool with Bodrov's revisionist take on Genghis Khan's rise to power, this is the first chapter of a planned trilogy -- though we imagine the financiers here will wait until the worldwide receipts are tallied before shelling out for a second installment, but if the release date change (December 2007 --> March 2008 --> August 2008) is any indication of investor confidence. But how awesome is this trailer? I love the Yimou Zhang influence. Director: Mark Osborne John Stevenson Stars: Jack Black, Ian McShane, Angelina Jolie (Full Cast) Studio: DreamWorks Animation The Plot: Po (Black), a reluctant panda bear, is recruited by a team of Kung Fu masters and trained in the ways of the ancient martial art in order to protect the Valley of Peace from an evil snow leopard.
THE BUZZ: Just when you thought it wasn't possible to out blitz Bee Movie's ad nauseam marketing crusade for an animated movie lacking green ogres, penguins or Pixar, this cuddly black-and-white slacker comes along and starts telling us to turn off our cell phones before every single movie! Okay, we get it, build awareness, create interest. But really, aren't pandas and kung fu pretty interesting on their own already? Still, gotta hand it to D'Works for booking another Stiller, er, stellar voiceover cast. Black's got skills for drawing in the JanSport set and Jolie can finally take Shiloh and Maddox to see mommy on the big screen. Director: Steve Conrad Stars: Seann William Scott, John C. Reilly (Full Cast) Studio: Third Rail Releasing The Plot: Dueling assistant managers of a local grocery store (Scott and Reilly) vie for a coveted promotion to manage the bigger, fancier store soon to be opened by their corporate employers.
THE BUZZ: Chances are this indie dramedy written and directed by Steve Conrad (screenwriter of the surprisingly successful The Pursuit of Happyness and the surprisingly unsuccessful The Weather Man) will be the breakout hit of 2008. Says who? Just about every reviewer/blogger type who saw the movie at SXSW earlier this year. Watch the trailer to see if it looks worth the hype. Director: Anand Tucker Stars: Jim Broadbent, Colin Firth, Juliet Stevenson (Full Cast) Studio: Sony Pictures Classics The Plot: Writer Blake Morrison (Firth) meditates on his relationship with his father, Arthur (Broadbent), during his dad's final weeks battling terminal cancer.
THE BUZZ: Aside from the on-screen pairing of Firth and Broadbent, more reasons to see WDYLSYF? are: director Anand Tucker, who took 7 years to follow up Hilary and Jackie with the sublime Shopgirl, and screenwriter David Nicholls, who adapted Morrison's novel and also adapted his own novel for the little-seen and totally-worth-watching Starter for Ten. Director: Eric Styles Stars: Heather Graham, Mia Kirshner, Orlando Seale (Full Cast) Studio: First Look International The Plot: When 33-year-old Georgina (Graham) discovers she only has one more chance to get pregnant, she sends her reluctant boyfriend (Ellis) packing and enlists the services of her best friend (Kirshner) to find the right baby daddy.
THE BUZZ: Now we know what Mia Kirshner does during breaks on "The L Word," and we love that her Jenny Schecter mumble-speak is in effect here. As for Rollergirl's British accent? Well, the nicest thing I can say is: I recently re-watched both Six Degress of Separation and Boogie Nights, and we hope H.G. gets her 90s mojo back soon. It's interesting, however, that one of her other upcoming movies will be yet another We're Pregnant! comedy. Message Boards: Heather Graham's Accent | I thought it was okay? Director: Louis Leterrier Stars: Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: Geneticist Bruce Banner (Norton) takes flight in order to understand -- and hopefully cure -- that the condition that turns him into a monster. Complicating his situation is the military initiative that wants him captured and controlled, as well as the arrival of a more-deadly nemesis: The Abomination.
THE BUZZ: One of the reasons the Marvel Universe is the hottest Hollywood territory is because of their note-perfect casting. With Edward Norton ascending to the role he almost nabbed the first time around, we can finally let Ang Lee's Hulk rest and consider this movie the first in a sure-shot franchise. Transporter director Louis Leterrier is working off a screenplay by Zak Penn (who is now working on the Captain America and Avengers scripts), so we knew from day one that the action will be ratcheted way up (uhh, check!), without sacrificing too much characterization. But because this is an Internet-supported movie, there's very little we don't know about it sight unseen. So, what can we ask? Well, did you hear that the film's third act will include a 26-minute Hulk vs. Abomination fight sequence? (Leterrier let's it rip here.) Ummm, did you also read that CHUD article that let it be known there's a handful of easter-egg characters to be found throughout the film? P.S. If you were following the whole screenplay drama, Norton's no longer getting credit for it, just Penn is. Message Boards: Different versions of Hulk? | What the deuce is Samson banging on about? Director: M. Night Shyamalan Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: A family is on the run after natural disaster threatens the entire planet.
THE BUZZ: If tinfoil hats shield people from the effects of electromagnetic fields, alien mind control and watching Lady in the Water, then Shyamalan fans have nothing to worry about here. 'Cause aside from the alleged troubles he faced trying to get this script off the ground, M. Night's bigger obstacle may be getting audiences to forget about those silly scants and snarfs. But the second trailer definitely has my attention (and the redband trailer nearly made me cover my eyes), and we can agree that Mark Wahlberg can turn the weakest sauce into something tasty. Plus, indie queen Zooey Deschanel will attract hip boys and girls alike. Then there's John Leguizamo, who deserves a fat paycheck. Will Shyamalan earn street cred with a gritty, hard-won success? Director: Carlos Brooks Stars: Nick Stahl, Vera Farmiga (Full Cast) Studio: Magnolia Pictures The Plot: A semi-paralyzed reporter (Sthal) is sent out to investigate a story that first leads him into an odd subculture, and then lured on a journey of disturbing self-realization by a beautiful, mysterious woman (Farmiga).
THE BUZZ: Cronenberg fans, pay attention: Carlos Brooks's directorial debut generated hotel-lobby buzz at Sundance this year for its provocative weirdness that sends Nick Stahl on a body-altering journey. And who could blame him, since we'd follow Vera Farmiga just about anywhere -- even to the point of paralysis. "What?" I heard you say. Director: Jay Duplass Mark Duplass Stars: Ross Partridge, Steve Zissis, Greta Gerwig (Full Cast) Studio: Sony Pictures Classics The Plot: Four struggling actors retreat to a cabin in Big Bear, California in order to write a screenplay that will make them all stars. Problem is: What happens when their story idea -- a horror flick about a group of friends tormented by a villain with a bag over his head -- starts to come true?
THE BUZZ: What happens when horror movies stop being schlocky ... and start getting real? That's what indie-minded brothers Jay and Mark Duplass ask with their follow up to The Puffy Chair, which I'm guessing will benefit ever so slightly from looking like a spoof of The Strangers. It will definitely be an interesting experience for the brothers as Baghead gets the typical indie push (an initial opening in NYC/LA, with further expansion based on performance) rather than The Puffy Chair's steady unfurling that relied solely on word of mouth. People seem slightly confused as to the movie's intention -- is it a horror film or a comedy? -- but the reviews are strong from all fronts. Director: Guy Maddin Stars: Darcy Fehr, Ann Savage (Full Cast) Studio: IFC Films The Plot: Experimental filmmaker Guy Maddin's "docu-fantasia" about his native city, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
THE BUZZ: Have Guy Maddin's weirdo movie titles and avant-garde approach to moviemaking confounded you in the past? Director: Peter Segal Stars: Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Alan Arkin (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: Maxwell Smart (Carrell), Agent 86 for CONTROL, battles the forces of KAOS with the more-competent Agent 99 (Hathaway) at his side.
THE BUZZ: Hmmm... Mel Brooks and Buck Henry as reinterpreted by the guys who wrote Failure to Launch.... Where's KAOS when you really need them? Still, we give courageous snaps to the nice casting, but weren't Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 supposed to be romantic foils? Carell, handsome as he is, seems more suited to playing Hathaway's father than her boyfriend. We'll be watching "Office" reruns and the Devil Wears Prada DVD instead, thanks. Director: Marco Schnabel Stars: Mike Myers, Jessica Alba, Romany Malco (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Pictures The Plot: Pitka (Meyers) an American raised outside of his country by gurus, returns to the States in order to break into the self-help business. His first challenge: To settle the romantic troubles and subsequent professional skid of a star hockey player (Malco) whose wife left him for a rival lover (Timberlake) before the NHL Stanley Cup.
THE BUZZ: This level of character-based humor might expose Meyers as a player whose time has come and gone. And don't get us started on Guru's convoluted premise and the fact that the trailer doesn't take the time to let you know how Jessica Alba fits into the story. The only things that excite us here: (1) The presence of "Weeds" standout Romany Malco (even if he's styled like a Delirious-era Eddie Murphy) and (2) Justin Timberlake looking ready to steal scenes. Director: Sarah Gavron Stars: Tannishtha Chatterjee, Satish Kaushik, Christopher Simpson (Full Cast) Studio: Sony Pictures Classics The Plot: 18-year-old Nazneen (Chatterjee) is brought from Bangladesh to London for an arranged marriage with the middle-aged Chanu (Kaushik). As the years press on, Nazneen finds herself a mother of two installed in a loveless relationship, though the arrival of a Muslim radical (Simpson) might be just the circumstance to help her find the strength to live life on her own terms.
THE BUZZ: Back in 2003, Monica Ali's wildly successful debut novel was shortlisted for the prestigious Man Booker Prize, the same award for which the novel versions of Notes on a Scandal and Atonement both competed. Both something happened in the translation from page to screen, since the hotly anticipated immigrant drama has failed to generate much heat from the festival circuit (an essential ingredient in getting U.S. art-house types to pay attention). THE BUZZ: Number Five is alive and animated. According to legend, this film is the last of the leftover projects the Incredibles crew chewed over during an infamous lunch date back in 1994 that spawned several Oscars for Pixar and Disney. Now the 'toon twosome are poised for another box office return that's out of this world (and hopefully still doing lunch together). P.S. Director: Timur Bekmambetov Stars: Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: Wesley Gibson (McAvoy) is rescued from his miserable existence by the gun-toting Fox (Jolie), a member of the Fraternity, a group of assassins to which Wesley's recently murdered father belonged. As their new recruit, Wesley learns he's truly a chip off the old block as he is trained by Fox and the Fraternity's leader, Sloan (Freeman) -- but what secrets are they hiding?
THE BUZZ: Timur Bekmambetov's English-language debut is similar in theme to his criminally mismarketed Night Watch, except Wanted is spun off from a pottymouthed comic serial darker in nature than V for Vendetta and Sin City combined. While the buzz surrounding this has simmered, initial reviews have stoked the flames, as have the reports that Universal already has a sequel in development. Bekmambetov might just break through in the U.S., but if not, it's not like his career is hurting in his native Russia. Director: Adam Yauch Stars: Jerryd Bayless, Michael Beasley, Tyreke Evans (Full Cast) Studio: Gravitas Ventures The Plot: A documentary that follows eight of the top high school basketball players as they compete in the first "Elite 24" tournament at Rucker Park in New York City.
THE BUZZ: Beastie Boy Adam Yauch brings us the first project from his newly launched movie company, Oscilloscope Pictures (look for their second project, FLOW, later this year). NYC summers are so in right now, what with SATC ruling the world-wide box office and The Wackness gearing up for its July release, but the season hasn't been favorable for documentaries. However, Yauch is playing it cool with Gunnin' by releasing the doc in 7 hoops-friendly cities as the 2008 NBA Draft kicks into gear -- perhaps the major studios could learn a thing or two from such a strategy. Director: Peter Tolan Stars: Matthew Broderick, Brittany Snow, Maura Tierney (Full Cast) Studio: HDNet Films The Plot: A television producer (Broderick) with a penchant for drinking and gambling is sent to Las Vegas to convince his troubled niece (Snow) to enter rehab.
THE BUZZ: I'd swear this movie was from the mid-90s if Matthew Broderick didn't look so ... puffy. And while I don't mean to sound harsh, from the looks of the trailer, Ferris B. seems to be phoning this role in. Brittany Snow, on the other hand, takes a departure from becoming just another a horror-remake queen with what could be an engaging performance (in that her role seems to require a dynamic range from comedy to drama and back again). Magnolia Pictures has made the movie available on DISH On-Demand already, an unsurprising move from the studio that brings you, among other things, Steve Soderbergh's indie digressions.
