Leatherheads

Director: George Clooney
Stars: George Clooney, Renée Zellweger, John Krasinski (Full Cast)
Studio: Universal Pictures

The Plot: An aging football legend (Clooney) and the hot college star he's drafted for his pro team (Krasinski) fight for the heart of an intrepid up-and-coming journalist (Zellweger). Oh, it all takes place in 1925.

Leatherheads (2008) -- A romantic comedy set in the world of 1920s football, where the owner of a professional team drafts a strait-laced college sensation, only to watch his new coach fall for his fiance.

THE BUZZ: His Girl Friday meets Any Given Sunday as Clooney attempts to put an old-style screwball comedy spin on the then-nascent sport of professional football. Assuming you can get over the titular headgear (can Clooney even make this look good?) it all sounds perky enough, and hopefully Clooney can translate his quirky sense of humor to the director's chair. Zellweger also makes a canny move back to comedy (though dial down the squinting, please!), and we're happy that Krasinski finally gets a chance to crack his Office persona. (Only a chance, mind you.)

Shine a Light (2008) -- A career-spanning documentary on the Rolling Stones, with concert footage from their "A Bigger Bang" tour.

THE BUZZ: Scorsese isn't exactly breaking new ground here. He's rocked the music world before (No Direction Home, The Last Waltz) and the Stones have also had their share of documentaries (Gimme Shelter, Sympathy for the Devil) these past few decades. So, what's with all the backstage drama on this film's release getting pushed back from last year? Who knows? It's only rock and roll, but we like it. Besides, if anyone's proven that they get better with age, it's these guys.

Nim's Island

Nim's Island

Director: Jennifer Flackett Mark Levin
Stars: Jodie Foster, Gerard Butler, Abigail Breslin (Full Cast)
Studio: Fox-Walden

The Plot: A popular author (Foster) teams up the adventure-loving Alex Rover (Butler) in order to help her number-one fan (Breslin), a young girl who lives on a secret island where her father has gone missing. Two problems the author faces: her crippling fear of leaving her house, and the fact that Alex is merely the main character in her best-selling novels.

Nim's Island (2008) -- Jodie Foster has a new role that's lighter than her recent adult fare, "Nim's Island," a comedy adventure for kids. She speaks with Harry Smith.

THE BUZZ: Finally, there's an Indiana Jones for girls, and who better to star in it (and receive top billing) than little miss Abigail Breslin, last seen being a touch too dreary in No Reservations. One peek at Nim's trailer reveals a promising springtime family adventure, with Jodie Foster taking a much-needed timeout from high-drama roles in order to showcase her comedic talents (truly, she's a major spazz and looks great with a smile on her face). Meanwhile, Gerard Butler looks to expand his appeal with a goofy/sweet performance as Nim's dad and Alex's life coach. P.S. Don't squint your eyes or you will think you see Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman.

The Plot: A Mexican vacation takes a turn for the worse for a group of Americans when they head into the jungle to look for the missing brother of a fellow traveler. A foreboding encounter with a couple locals is only a hint of the evil that awaits them on a patch of secluded hillside.

THE BUZZ: If you have the Sundance Channel, chances are you've caught director Carter Smith's Bugcrush, a creepy short film that helped earn him a his chance to take a crack at feature filmmaking. In terms of the played-out horror genre, you actually could ask for worse source material than this popular book by Scott B. Smith (he wrote the novel A Simple Plan); come to think of it, three of the four principals here are solid in their own right. Laura Ramsey rounds out the cast - you may remember from another Cancun misadventure.

My Blueberry Nights (2007) -- "Showbuzz RAW": In filmmaker Wong Kar Wai's English language debut, the acclaimed director takes his audience on a dramatic journey across the distance between heartbreak and a new beginning.

THE BUZZ: Oh, Harvey Weinstein, we kinda love that you are back to your old ways -- promising us the best art-house presentations your money can buy, only to delay their releases by putting your meaty hands all over completed works and refashioning them into something miles away from the director's final cut. It's too bad that you are married ...

We can expect a wildy different Blueberry from the version Cannes shrugged at last year. We keep hearing that the story's well-worn themes are obscured by Natalie Portman and Rachel Weisz's performances, and that maybe -- just maybe -- Jude Law's role should have recast and that Ms. Jones' should stick to the recording booth ...

Stars: Aaron Eckhart, Jessica Alba, Logan Lerman (Full Cast)
Studio: First Look International

Bill (2007) -- Meet Bill Trailer
Bill (2007) -- A guy fed up with his job and married to a cheating wife reluctantly mentors a rebellious teen.

THE BUZZ: Originally, Lindsay Lohan was cast alongside Aaron Eckhart as a smiley salesgirl who becomes the target of Bill's mentee's affection, but then, you know, things got a little out of control with Lindsay and the role eventually went to Jessica Alba. Turns out LL dodged another career-slaying bullet, since Meet Bill has been called labeled a seriously unfunny comedy by nearly every major critic who saw it on the festival circuit. Good thing Eckhart is the face of the best marketing campaign of the year or else I'd start falling out of love with him.

THE BUZZ: Even though this story of serious drama inside the LAPD is a custom fit for David Ayer (Harsh Times), the project went through a series of overhauls before he was brought in to direct. David Fincher, Spike Lee, and Oliver Stone were all ready to make it at one point or the other, but script and financing changes over a two-year period ultimately led to the screenplay being dropped at Ayer's door. At least the project is at Fox Searchlight, who should have no difficulty marketing another intense Forest Whitaker performance -- remember their enduring awards campaign for The Last King of Scotland? Look for Ayer to be completely in his element here, telling a sort of years-later story he so expertly created with Training Day.

Director: Thomas McCarthy

Studio: Anchor Bay Entertainment

The Plot: College professor Walter Vale (Jenkins) travels to New York to attend a conference and finds a young couple -- a Syrian guy (Sleiman) and a Senegalese woman (Gurira) -- living in the apartment he keeps there. The surprise leads to unexpected friendships, and a much-needed new lease on life for Vale.

The Visitor (2007) -- A college professor travels to New York City to attend a conference and finds a young couple living in his apartment.

THE BUZZ: Thomas McCarthy's long-awaited follow up to The Station Agent (still awesome five years later) has earned near-rapturous reviews from the festival circuit primarily for two reasons: the writer-director's nuanced feel for creating friendships between equally nuanced characters, and star Richard Jenkins's (you'll know the face) breakout performance in a leading role, after spending most of his career as a character actor. What most critics go on to say is that McCarthy wisely avoided addressing the Arab-in-America theme with a heavy hand, though at times he does come close to getting on that particular soapbox ...

Smart People (2008) -- Into the life of a widowed professor comes a new love and an unexpected visit from his adopted brother.

THE BUZZ: Looking to be one of the best-reviewed films at Sundance this year, Smart People should have decent momentum as it builds toward its release this spring. Distributor Miramax is emerging beautifully in the post-Weinstein era, and they look to have a potential breakout hit on their hands; early reviews indicate that Noam Murro (you remember Noam, the commercials director that was supposed to make his debut with The Ring Two but wisely stepped away from that project) has created a dysfunctional family comedy that is both familiar and surprising. And reportedly the movie belongs to Thomas Haden Church and Ellen Page -- but that is not so surprising.

THE BUZZ: Once-hot screenwriter Stephen Susco finally got one of his post-Grudge ideas to stick, but this remake got the green light before the R-rated horror backlash. And if you want to proof of how Grindhouse and Hostel: Part Deux's respective failures have affected upcoming projects, take a look at this ... So if we're to expect less violence and more stalking from this PG-13 affair, I guess we can stop imagining, contrary to what the trailer might have us believe, this one doesn't exactly play out like the cast of High School Musical picked off one by one by a scorned Wildcat.

Chaos Theory (2007) -- The story of an obsessively organized efficiency expert whose life unravels in unexpected ways when fate forces him to explore the serendipitous nature of love and forgiveness.

THE BUZZ: The hard thing to accept here is the idea of Ryan Reynolds being tightly wound, but I'm in for the ride if only because of RR's likability and natural comic sensibilities. Plus, any one-time indie project that gets called up to the majors (this used to be a Warner Independent title) is worth a look, especially one that co-stars Ms. Mortimer, who herself is leaving the indie world behind it seems. Funny to remember that Pretty Persuasion director Marcos Siega's last film was Underclassman -- how did that happen, anyway? We're amazed he hasn't tried to remove that from his IMDb page.

But all of our finger crossing might be for nothing, because despite this reliable premise -- and a cast that includes a bevy of lovelies and Ryan from The O.C. -- a quick census of those who have seen the film already says it's an exercise in formula and cliché.

THE BUZZ: Jackie Chan and Jet Li unite for the first time for a kung-fu family comedy based on the Chinese legend of the Monkey King. A lot of people are asking who Michael Angarano is and why he was selected for the role (maybe the producers had foreknowledge of Shia LaBeouf's coming fame - he and Angarano look like brothers from the same mother); others are asking why Chan and the I'm-retired-from-kung-fu-films Li have come together for something so PG-13 (easy: both of them have officially cashed in on their global fame). Still, I think the trailer looks fun; a sort-of update on Time Bandits and The Karate Kid?

THE BUZZ: Texas Hold'em, like NASCAR, is one of those pop-culture obsessions from which Hollywood is yearning to make a profit. But let's be honest: The actual-real "World Series of Poker" TV broadcasts will for years bring in bigger audiences than this small-time production could ever dream of. And no one in this cast is as hot as Jim Sturgess.

THE BUZZ: Why New Line didn't release this film on Sunday, April 20th is beyond us, but we all know the troubles the once-powerful studio has had of late (and if you aren't aware, here's a primer). May H&K's ever-growing cult bring some cheer to those left at the studio, and we hope the movie's suer-shot success will serve as a blueprint for New Line's future projects (we understand they'll be focusing on smaller-budget comedies and genre pics).

H&K 2 rocked the SXSW festival this year -- right alongside recent box-office champ 21 -- and fans should be stoked to hear that very few instances of the naughty stoner antics were trimmed for the theatrical release. So get ready for plenty of nude women, bong toting, and Neil Patrick Harris chasing unicorns while 'shrooming.

Deception (2008) -- An accountant is introduced to a mysterious sex club known as The List by his lawyer friend. But in this new world, he soon becomes the prime suspect in a woman's disappearance and a multi-million dollar heist.

THE BUZZ: Ooh, did you hear that Twentieth Century Fox balked at this script because it was too racy? Makes us wonder what the compromise was, since Fox didn't walk away from the project completely. We will assume that List producer-star Jackman's participation in a little movie called Wolverine got the studio to feel differently about this indie-level pet project. P.S. Why do we always feel as though Michael Douglas will pop up in such a movie? P.P.S. When will Michelle Williams stop taking roles in her friend's movies? P.P.P.S. Is that Natasha Henstridge in the cast?

Rogue (2007) -- An American journalist on assignment in the Australian outback encounters a man-eating crocodile.

THE BUZZ: The Weinsteins played it safe by giving this one some distance between other timely croc-themed disasters (Steve Irwin, Primeval). But we're not so sure that pushing Radha Mitchell and company out into the water with a non-existent marketing campaign will prevent this little jungle cruise adventure from running aground, bloodied and defeated. (When was the last time Harvey W. put his beef behind one of his movies, anyway?) But look at it this way: At least Radha Mitchell won't have to hide her accent, and Michael Vartan can still afford to live in Hollywood.

Then She Found Me

Then She Found Me [NYC]

Director: Helen Hunt
Stars: Helen Hunt, Colin Firth, Bette Midler (Full Cast)
Studio: THINKFilm

The Plot: April Epner (Hunt) is a 39-year-old schoolteacher in crisis: She and her husband are on the outs, she is becoming increasingly desperate to have a child, and her adoptive mother just passed away. Into all of this drama bursts her birth mother (Midler), who wants an instant parent-child bonding experience, as well as a potential suitor (Firth), who just happens to be the father of one of April's students.

THE BUZZ: Helen Hunt directed a movie, and by all accounts it doesn't appear to be a bad one. In fact, her dramedy has won over audiences (older audiences, as you might expect) and certain critics who recognize a fledgling talent, especially one who arrives with all of their emotions bubbling over the surface. Co-star Better Midler wouldn't have it any other way, right? And apparently she deftly handles the hysterics; meanwhile, Colin Firth is Darcy enough to please the ladies who will undoubtedly turn TSFM into an eventual hit (what I mean is: this should clean up on DVD, though I am not underestimating its box-office potential). Don't read any frumpy-boy reviews; I say check this one out.

Roman de gare (2007) -- Open-ended Trailer from Samuel Goldwyn Films

THE BUZZ: I'll cop to not being familiar with Claude Lelouch's works, but Roman de gare (translation: "railway station novel" -- a French euphemism for popular novels), has me intrigued. Knowing that he's never afraid of a narrative tangent, and that he tried to sneak this film into Cannes under a pseudonym, I'm ready to immerse myself in this railway movie's red herrings, subplots, and digressions. Besides, the pairing of Fanny Ardant and Dominique Pinon (think: City of Lost Children)? Irresistible. Here's the trailer.

Standard Operating Procedure (2008) -- Errol Morris examines the incidents of abuse and torture of suspected terrorists at the hands of U.S. forces at the Abu Ghraib prison.

THE BUZZ: Think of this as a companion piece to the Oscar-winning documentary Taxi to the Dark Side. Here, Errol Morris (himself no stranger to Oscar), managed to secure interview with 5 of the 7 MPs indicted for their actions at Abu Ghraib, though he has been criticized by many for being unclear in his intent by scattering these infamous images across the screen. We typically avoid Variety's reviews (so hammy), but the points Todd McCarthy brings up are worth reading.
