Director: Bruce A. Evans Stars: Kevin Costner, Demi Moore, William Hurt (Full Cast) Studio: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) The Plot: A detective (Moore) tracks a potential serial killer (Costner), an otherwise normal man with a devious alter ego (Hurt).
THE BUZZ: Yeesh, what decade should rightfully claim this movie? One has to imagine a version of the script has been in existence for a good 20 years or so, and there has to be a clause in Hurt's contract that will allow him to be even more over the top than he was in A History of Violence. To address the forums circulating on the Net: Yes, Kevin Costner deserves credit for trying something new; yes, Demi Moore thinks this will Halle Berry her back to the B List. Director: Judd Apatow Stars: Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl, Paul Rudd (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: A guy (Rogen) hooks up a one-night stand with a beauty (Heigl) who's way out of his league. An unplanned pregnancy leads first to a tough decision, then to a series of unexpected events.
THE BUZZ: Writer-director Judd Apatow has been called the funniest man in Hollywood, but we feel as though he's merely the luckiest person around ... at the moment. To us, Knocked Up is Apatow's riff on his unexpected success, which he looks to continue with another rauchy-but-morally-centered comedy. Really, Apatow is Tom Shadyac with a jones for an R-rating. 40-Year-Old Virgin fans will rejoice knowing that the director's posse -- Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Jonah Hill, etc. -- are all present and accounted for here. We understand most of the boys will serve as Rogen's buds who run a celebrity skin website. Rumor has it this will be the surprise blockbuster of the summer. Director: Timur Bekmambetov Stars: Konstantin Khabenskiy, Mariya Poroshina, Vladimir Menshov (Full Cast) Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures The Plot: In present-day Moscow, a hero (Khabensky) who has been inducted into a centuries-old battle between the forces of Light and Dark seeks out a legendary object that can rewrite history -- literally.
THE BUZZ: This trailer is awesomeness. In terms of its chances in the U.S., the advantage Day Watch has over its predecessor is: instead of waiting years to see it on the big screen -- and, while watching its release date come and go, perhaps opting to scoop it up on DVD -- DW is just over a year old, having smashed Russian box office records upon its debut last January. During this time, writer-director Timur Bekmambetov decided to test out the American studio system with Wanted, Night Watch became an even bigger cult hit, and the debate as to whether the third and final film would be made raged on. Oh, and in terms of the battle between Good and Evil, well, it's still a tie. THE BUZZ: Lucy Liu + a gender-bent version of The Crow = approximately one million fanboys who are too excited to stand up from their computer chairs. Director: Davis Guggenheim Stars: Carly Schroeder, Andrew Shue, Elisabeth Shue (Full Cast) Studio: Picturehouse Entertainment The Plot: Set in the late '70s, a New Jersey girl fights to play on the boys' varsity soccer team.
THE BUZZ: A true family affair. Elisabeth Shue co-stars and produces with brother, Andrew, while hubby, Guggenheim, directs her semi-autobiographical tale, which is sure to inspire the next generation of Kristine Lillys and Mia Hamms, as well as score major points with the soccer mom set. Schroeder has the biggest cleats to fill, however, beating out 9000 other girls in a nationwide search to see who could channel a pre-Karate Kid Shue and still bend it like Beckham. Director: Dan Klores Fisher Stevens Stars: Burt Pugach, Linda Pugach (Full Cast) Studio: Magnolia Pictures The Plot: A documentary on Burt and Linda Pugach's improbable relationship - a love story that begins with an affair, descends into jealousy, rage and revenge, and turns into a contemporary marriage.
THE BUZZ: Quoting something we saw on another site: "Boy meets girl; girl finds out boy is married; girl gets engaged to another boy; original boy blinds girl by having acid thrown on her face; boy goes to jail for 14 years in a very public trial; boy gets out of jail; boy winds up marrying girl; boy and girl are still presently married, some 28 years later." Director: Adrian Shergold Stars: Timothy Spall, Juliet Stevenson, Eddie Marsan (Full Cast) Studio: IFC First Take The Plot: Albert Pierrepoint (Spall), Britain's most prolific hangman, sends hundreds of prisoners to their deaths from 1934 to 1956 -- while moonlighting as a grocery deliveryman and keeping his other life a secret from his wife (Stevenson).
THE BUZZ: Even with the wonderful Spall in the lead role, and the fact that Pierrepoint was recruited by the war effort to put convicted Nazis to death, we can't see this drama being all that cinematic. Message Boards: Excellent Movie | True story of Pierrepoint? Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews | |||||

Director: Ash Brannon Chris Buck Stars: Shia LaBeouf, Zooey Deschanel, Jon Heder (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: A documentary crew follows overzealous surfing prodigy Cody Maverick (LaBeouf) as he travels from his home in Shiverpool, Antarctica to the Big Z Memorial Surf Off on Pen Gu Island. As he amasses a clutch of supporters along the way, he ultimately must stand on his own against an unexpected competitor: a washed-up but wily old surfer named Geek (Bridges).
THE BUZZ: Ooh, this is like the Infamous of animated penguin movies ... The directors of Toy Story 2 and Tarzan combine their talents to dive into the animal mystique. And somehow relatively green writers Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse got the call to pen the screenplay. Is that rooster stoned? Message Boards: this movie was so lame and cliche! | 7.1 really guys? Director: Steven Soderbergh Stars: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and circles up the boys for a third a heist, after casino owner Willy Bank (Al Pacino) double-crosses one of the original eleven, Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould).
THE BUZZ: Like a never-ending Vegas buffet, this franchise hypnotically keeps us coming back for more. No one can blame Soderbergh and co. for wanting to pal around with the ol' gang at Clooney's Como villa for the last sequel. But, why again? Especially when this year's Rat Pack reunion is held at a studio back lot in Burbank. No dice for Julia Roberts; Catherine Zeta-Jones is out too, paving the way for Ellen Barkin, which is a way bigger gamble than throwing Al Pacino into the mix. Still, expect a sizable jackpot for Warner Bros., who are amazed as you are that Danny Ocean is back. Message Boards: god father pun!! | what does brad pitt say..... Director: Eli Roth Stars: Lauren German, Heather Matarazzo, Bijou Phillips (Full Cast) Studio: Lionsgate The Plot: While studying art in Rome for the summer, three young American women (German, Matarazzo, Phillips) are lured away to a Slovakian hostel by a model from their class. Soon they will experience the grim reality their weekend getaway has in store.
THE BUZZ: Same concept. Different gender. And a summer release instead of the dead of winter. H2's casting totally tickled our fancy (when did Bijou Phillips become so upmarket?), and thank God those Paris Hilton rumors proved false. This sequel should mirror Saw 2's success, which means we should expect a third installment within the next 12 months. But let's hope Eli Roth will move on to his other projects. We really want to see him run with the Stephen King adaptation, Cell, which is shaping up to be his next movie. Oh, Jay Hernandez's Paxton is back, and reports have it Óli will make an appearance -- no spoilers for those who have yet to brave the first film. Director: Olivier Dahan Stars: Marion Cotillard, Sylvie Testud (Full Cast) Studio: Picturehouse Entertainment The Plot: Marion Cotillard portrays Edith Piaf, the tragic, beloved French contralto who would become an icon with her songs "La vie en rose", "Hymne à l'amour", and "Non, je ne regrette rien".
THE BUZZ: Olivier Dahan's Piaf-ography nearly ousted Taxi 4 from the top of the Gallic box office back in February. And this is despite near-universal reviews that his film is scattered and perhaps a bit too downbeat. (To which we say: It's a film about Edith Piaf ...) Dahan's direction and Cotillard's performance during concert sequences are award-worthy, reportedly. Director: Tim Story Stars: Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: The Fantastic Four face two severe threats: the arrival of the enigmatic Silver Surfer, who has come to Earth with a planetary destruction in mind, and the shocking return of their main nemesis.
THE BUZZ: Interesting that the Four serial has become Marvel's most viable future franchise, maybe even more so than Spider-Man? What we mean is: A third installment is all but guaranteed -- especially for those of us who already know how this one ends -- and it's not like Alba and Co. will be any more famous over the next several years, despite how expensive they have become in their respective costumes. Meanwhile, we're wondering if Fox will spin off a series of direct-to-video Surfer movies; speaking of Norrin Radd, our first impression of the Surfer? Since the Four will never win an Oscar, they might as well fight a villain that looks exactly like one. Director: Andrew Fleming Stars: Emma Roberts, Tate Donovan, Max Thieriot (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: While accompanying her father on a trip to Los Angeles, teen detective Nancy Drew (Roberts) begins to put clues together that could unravel the mystery behind a movie star's death.
THE BUZZ: Maybe, as a "Veronica Mars" fan, I'm biased, but doesn't this sound kinda awesome? You know Emma's Hollywood peers are jealous that she's barely had to pay her dues before landing a role with serious sequel potential (not that any other Drew adventures have been optioned at this point). We hear Nancy might get caught up in the Hollywood lifestyle, which makes us realize Warner Bros., who put out The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and A Cinderella Story, is a studio that realizes teen girls don't need mature themes to be glossed over. Director: Corey Yuen Stars: Jaime Pressly, Devon Aoki, Sarah Carter (Full Cast) Studio: Dimension Films The Plot: A group of uniquely trained women are summoned to an island for a fighting tournament; though they start of as competitors, they soon band together against a deadly force.
THE BUZZ: So much shame precedes this movie's release, though we're not exactly sure who deserves it most. Corey Yuen earns his knocks for cashing in his cred here, though the beloved director/choreographer reportedly has, among other delights, staged a three-minute beach volleyball sequence that will make you wish theaters had slo-mo. The Weinstein brothers should feel red-faced for the countless release date delays (an ominous reminder of their days at Miramax) and for failing to create an official DOA website. But perhaps we should blame ourselves the most, for in spite of all the signs to keep away from this one, we'll probably be there for the first Saturday matinee. Director: Taika Cohen Stars: Loren Horsley, Jemaine Clement, Craig Hall (Full Cast) Studio: Miramax Films The Plot: A story of two ill-dressed misfits, their blind love, and one man's quest for revenge. THE BUZZ: Miramax wants you to sense that New Zealand's Eagle vs. Shark is the heir apparent to Napoleon Dynamite's geek kingdom. Many of the people who have already caught it say this the better movie, as it has less contempt for its characters. To us, the story's dark edges could make the self-aware comedy palatable. Hip kids, meanwhile, are anxiously awaiting to hear more from the New Zealand band The Phoenix Foundation, who provide E vs S's soundtrack (and some of its score), and have a debut record coming out in June. P.S. If you want some more offbeat New Zealand comedy, the first episode of HBO's Flight of the Conchords is available online here. THE BUZZ: In the thick of the summer onslaught doesn't feel like the most opportune time to road test a Canadian horror-comedy, no matter how fantastic it looks (check the photo gallery). What this movie needs is an ace advertising campaign and wicked awesome word-of-mouth; if any studio can generate such a twin-engine frenzy, it's Lionsgate. Director: Mikael Håfström Stars: John Cusack, Samuel L. THE BUZZ: You have to flip back to 1999's The Green Mile to find the last popular Stephen King adaptation (Secret Window was all about Johnny Depp's post-Pirates megastardom, nothing more), but something tells us 1408 might usher in an SK renaissance. Eli Roth is attached to make Cell his next film, and remakes of Creepshow and Pet Sematary are both in development. Stars John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson are all over the place in 2007, so hopefully they'll have time to promote this one; meanwhile, best of luck to Mary McCormack in her post-"West Wing" transition. We have to track down a copy of Mikael Håfström's Drowning Ghost before gauging this film's chances. P.S. THE BUZZ: We'll forgive John Dahl for The Great Raid, provided his new action-thriller-comedy doesn't in any way resemble The Whole Nine Yards, Grosse Pointe Blank, or his own early work. Director: Tom Shadyac Stars: Steve Carell, Morgan Freeman, Lauren Graham (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: God (Freeman) tasks Congressman Evan Baxter (Carrell) with building an ark in anticipation of a great flood.
THE BUZZ: Perhaps the most interesting thing here is the fact Universal and director Tom Shadyac optioned a spec script called The Passion of the Ark by writers Robert Florsheim and Josh Stolberg and re-fashioned it as the sequel. But really we're wondering if, with his freshly minted star status, whether Steve Carrell had the power to turn down this project down. Initial reaction to the film was frosty on our message boards, and the buzz hasn't warmed up since. All Universal really needs? THE BUZZ: Sad to be writing about this movie the same day that the U.S. military released a transcript in which suspected 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed confessed to the beheading of Mr. Pearl ... Michael Winterbottom's most high-profile project of his career to date features his usual approach to filmmaking (shooting guerilla style, without permits) with a new wrinkle: exactly how does one keep a low profile while Angelina Jolie, her husband, and their babies around? Director: Jonathan King Stars: Oliver Driver, Nathan Meister, Tammy Davis (Full Cast) Studio: IFC Films The Plot: A genetic engineering experiment at a family farm goes horribly wrong, turning hundreds of sheep into vengeful killers.
THE BUZZ: Already plastered all over the Internets, this New Zealand import will need killer word-of-mouth to be more than just gruel for midnight movie types. That crowd, by the way, is already crowing over the clever storytelling and radical creature effects (courtesy of Peter Jackson's Weta Workshop). Did somebody say "were-sheep"? THE BUZZ: With a cast that includes Parker Posey, Drea de Matteo, and Gena Rowlands (a.k.a. writer-director Zoe Cassavettes's mom), do you indie-movie fans need to know anything more about this innately hip filmmaker's debut feature? Director: Brad Bird Jan Pinkava Stars: Brad Garrett, Lou Romano, Patton Oswalt (Full Cast) Studio: Buena Vista Pictures The Plot: A Parisian rat with a sophisticated palate makes him his in an upscale restaurant that is ruled by an eccentric, world-famous chef.
THE BUZZ: Brad Bird (yes!) co-directs Pixar's latest with Jan Pinkava, the creative genius behind Geri's Game, the Oscar-winning which ran in front of A Bug's Life. Do their combined storytelling abilities make for the most anticipated Pixar movie to date? We think so, although that could be just another way of saying that we're more excited for this picture than we were for Cars; however, we think Disney's going to have a hard time getting kids to eat these vegetables. THE BUZZ: Granted, we know nothing about the source material this movie is based on, but from the moist-eyed, sobering premise and the extensive, multi-generational and talented cast, it sounds like How to Make an American Wet Blanket; the only thing that sounds intriguing is that Meryl Streep's daughter, Mamie Gummer, plays mom's character as a young woman. Also on the plus side: Michael Cunningham (The Hours) is writing the screenplay. On the minus, however: Hugh Dancy and Patrick Wilson? Borrrrrrrring!

Director: Len Wiseman Stars: Bruce Willis, Justin Long, Timothy Olyphant (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: John McClane (Willis) takes on an Internet-based terrorist organization who is systematically shutting down the United States.
THE BUZZ: The last time we checked in with detective John McClane, Bruce Willis was riding high off his knockout turn in Pulp Fiction, he and Demi were still an item and our hero had a full head of hair. Times have changed for this forgotten franchise and we're not so sure if obscure co-stars (apologies to the radiant Maggie Q. and to Tim Olyphant, the performer who looks to benefit from this one the most), the guy who directed both Underworlds, and a barrage of Internet hype is enough to make this explode at the box office -- especially when another Reagan-era mainstay lays in wait. THE BUZZ: Finally, there's a bonafide controversial movie to discuss; frankly, we're a bit tired of arguing for Hostel: Part II's right to exist ... Announced soon after Fahrenheit 9/11's unprecedented success, Sicko was shrouded in mystery until right before its Cannes premiere, though we managed to discover the following: Employees from top drug companies and insurance forms supplied Moore memos, first-hand accounts, data, etc; these same companies circulated tip sheets on what to do in case of a Michael Moore attack; Pfizer apparently went as far as to set up a hotline for their employees. THE BUZZ: Bruno Ganz (Downfall) returns to the art house, this time in a smaller role that we understand helps center director Fredi Murer's family drama.
