Director: Sam Raimi Stars: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Topher Grace (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: Peter Parker (Maguire), a.k.a. Spider-Man, faces a series of new challenges and threats as he embraces public adulation for the first time. His new-found self confidence causes him to take his relationships for granted -- namely his union with M.J. (Dunst), which is tested by the presence of the doting Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard). Self-assuredness also comes into play as he faces not one, but two powerful villains: Sandman (Church), an escaped convict made powerful by a nuclear explosion, and Venom (Grace), a parasitic life form from our hero's past.
THE BUZZ: Production on S-M 3 started quietly (and much less dramatically than its predecessor) in November, 2005. There were no chubby Tobey stories in the trades, no rumors of Jake Gyl replacing him ... just reports that our hero will face down not one, but two of his fiercest opponents. The formula rebooted the Batman franchise, and it's all but a guarantee to help make the third film in the series the most successful yet. Poor Topher Grace is facing the same fanboy scrutiny that Maguire himself weathered back when he was originally cast. In our minds, the actors are wonderfully paired. Though what's with the emphasis on the blondish boys and the minimal appearances of Mary Jane and new rival Gwen? Director: Curtis Hanson Stars: Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore, Robert Duvall (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: Professional card player Huck Cheever (Bana) tries to beat the odds (and his own demons) at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.
THE BUZZ: Lucky this one finally scored a release date ... Mr. Hanson, you are masterful at selling eccentric material, and we sincerely loved In Her Shoes, but would you consider something a bit more non-traditional for your next project? Mr. Bana, your new agent is out there somewhere, and she or he really thinks you're wonderful and wants to you to consider better scripts. Ms. Barrymore, maybe pull a Kate Hudson and we'll see you in 2008? Or '09? Director: Douglas Mackinnon Stars: Jonny Lee Miller, Laura Fraser, Brian Cox (Full Cast) Studio: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) The Plot: In 1993, cyclist Graeme Obree (Miller) breaks a world record with a bicycle he built from scrap metal and washing machine parts. Soon to be outdone by his longtime rival, Obree battles mental illness on his campaign to recapture glory.
THE BUZZ: Director Douglas Mackinnon spent over a decade nurturing this story, which looks to help make Trainspotting's Sick Boy a slightly bigger star in America (NBC cast him in their hopeful pilot, Eli Stone). Graeme Obree himself took turns with Jonny Lee Miller by acting as his double for some of the cycling sequences. Director: Adrienne Shelly Stars: Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion, Jeremy Sisto (Full Cast) Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures The Plot: When the unhappily married Jenna (Russell) discovers she's pregnant, she realizes her dream to leave her husband -- and her town, perhaps -- must come to fruition. Further inspiration arrives in the form of the town's handsome new doctor (Fillion).
THE BUZZ: As she was staging her return to film, Adrienne Shelly (best remembered as the star of Hal Hartley's best films) was murdered in her apartment in New York City. This terribly sad event is balanced by the sweetness Ms. Shelly left behind in the form of her last work, which received a warm reception at Sundance in January. Picture unaffected personal drama and high style, with knockout performances by Ms. Russell and Mr. Fillion and you have a perfect indie movie date. Director: Sarah Polley Stars: Julie Christie, Michael Murphy, Gordon Pinsent (Full Cast) Studio: Lions Gate Films The Plot: Deteriorating mental health causes Fiona (Christie) to agree to be admitted to a nursing home, where she will not be allowed to see her husband, Grant (Pinsent), for a 30-day period. And when Grant arrives for his first visit, he encounters a woman who no longer recognizes him and who has fallen for a fellow patient (Murphy).
THE BUZZ: Sarah Polley has spent nearly all of her life on indie film sets, and the experience has given her a heightened sense of ennui, as she's set to truly bum your stone with her directorial debut. The funny thing is: few people expected the film, despite its stunning cast, to survive once its festival tour was over. And now it's being positioned as a blockbuster-buster. Director: Olivier Assayas Frédéric Auburtin Stars: Juliette Binoche, Leonor Watling, Ludivine Sagnier (Full Cast) Studio: Celsius Entertainment The Plot: Twenty portraits of the City of Love from an international array of contemporary filmmakers.
THE BUZZ: We say it's been way too long since something as sumptuous and decadent as this multi-director affair floated onto the big-screen. Cross your fingers tightly, and it'll hopefully come to your city. P.S. Now that Paris is in the can, producer Emmanuel Benbihy has New York City on his mind, as well as a similarly themed project for China. Director: Jeff Renfroe Stars: Peter Krause, Khaled Abol Naga, Richard Schiff (Full Cast) Studio: Freestyle Releasing The Plot: A downsized accountant (Krause) becomes obsessed with the idea that the Muslim student next door (Naga) is a terrorist.
THE BUZZ: Two former TV hunks (Krause for the bod, Schiff for his sense of patriotism) join up with an Egyptian movie star for a post-9/11 spin on the trusty paranoid-thriller genre. And we hear it's quite effective, even if you know exactly how it's going to play out. Message Boards: Deserved A More Mainstream Release | How could this get 7.6?!?!?!? Director: Oren Rudavsky Stars: Chris Eigeman, Ian Holm, Famke Janssen (Full Cast) Studio: New Yorker Films The Plot: English teacher Jake Singer (Eigeman) enlists the services of Dr. Ernesto Morales (Holm), an aggressive psychiatrist, in order to get over his failed romance. When Jake meets a rich, grieving widow (Jannsen), Dr. Morales advice and admonishments occur at the most inopportune moments. THE BUZZ: The most intriguing thing about Oren Rudavsky's New York narrative: Ian Holm might be a figment of Chris Eigeman's neurotic imagination. Speaking of Eigeman, how cool is it to see him in a lead role? Neurotic, literate, and quintessentially New York, The Treatment might be the smartest film released this summer. Director: Juan Carlos Fresnadillo Stars: Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne, Robert Carlyle (Full Cast) Studio: Fox Atomic The Plot: Six months after London was struck by the rage virus, the city is being carefully repopulated by the U.S. Army. Though under quarantine, a carrier of the virus is admitted to the city and unknowningly causes a second deadly outbreak.
THE BUZZ: Well, Danny Boyle and his team are back, but Mr. Boyle has ceded the director's chair to Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Check out Fresnadillo's little-seen debut, Intacto, to soothe any concerns you have about the man's abilities to tell a story. And thank whomever that Fox Atomic got around to releasing a second trailer, which successfully framed this project as a worthy follow-up. THE BUZZ: Dear Mom, Small films are hard to make! I was late one day (exhausted), and Garry Marshall seemed so mad?! And then Jane Fonda gave me a talking to! Who does she think she is?

Director: Jesse Peretz Stars: Zach Braff, Amanda Peet, Charles Grodin (Full Cast) Studio: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) The Plot: Slacker Tom Reilly (Braff) is forced to work for his father-in-law (Grodin) after his wife (Peet) steps away from her high-paying job in order to care for their new baby. The pressures at work and at home are bridged when Tom discovers his new co-worker (Bateman) has a history with his wife.
THE BUZZ: A romantic comedy starring a guy and a gal who each have their own flagging NBC show. Did it just get really cold in here? The Ex (f.k.a. Fast Track) was indeed rushed into production earlier this year, back when Zach Braff was the hottest slacker in town. But then he gave us The Last Kiss and broke it off with Mandy Moore, causing his stock to plummet. However, we're feeling optimistic about this comedy. It feels like a movie Ben Stiller should have made ten years ago -- and that's a good thing, as Braff can make broad appeal non-annoying. And even though Amanda Peet can't quite get the Sorkin cadence down on "Studio 60," she looks set redeem herself as Braff's beleaguered spouse. And, of course, co-star Jason Bateman and bit-player Amy Poehler should supply plenty of one-liners to recite days after the happy ending. Director: C.B. Harding Stars: Larry The Cable Guy, Bill Engvall, DJ Qualls (Full Cast) Studio: Lionsgate The Plot: Three pals head off for a weekend of beer drinking beer and gun shooting, only to be misidentified as Army Reservists and loaded on to a plane headed for Iraq. Further mistakes are made as the trio is ejected somewhere over Mexico, crash-landing in the middle of a village that's run by a local warlord. Will they finish their beers and fight for Mexican justice -- even though they believe they're really somewhere in the Middle East?
THE BUZZ: Larry the Cable Guy and fellow Blue Collar Comedy vet Bill Engvall look to bring their particular brand of humor to an even larger audience with this action genre riff. Since LtCG's last movie, Health Inspector, is high up in our Bottom 100 (#38 as of this writing), we feel as though you might agree with our take on this movie: We hope Chuck Norris crashes Farce's premiere and hi-yahs everyone involved with the production -- especially DJ Qualls. Director: Irwin Winkler Stars: Samuel L. Jackson, 50 Cent, Jessica Biel (Full Cast) Studio: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) The Plot: Right at the end of their respective assignments in Iraq, four American soldiers look to complete a final mission, to bring medical supplies to a remote village. Ambushed, the unit suffers heavy losses, and the survivors are then forced to try and readjust to life at home.
THE BUZZ: So many Iraq projects being made, they're starting to blur together. HotB first distinguished itself as the one with the dubious casting. The mere mention of 50 Cent was enough to set message boards afire, and for the rapper/actor to start using the name his mama gave him; losing Eva Mendes was a bummer (she opted out for We Own the Night); then, of course, there's the presence of Chad Michael Murray in a supporting role. Never mind the fact that it's not the most patriotic of all the current war pictures: early on in the production, a crew strike (both union and non-union folks were working together) threatened to move the production from Spokane, Washington to British Columbia, Canada. Our advice: Rent any number of the good-to-excellent Iraq War documentaries that have been released over the last two years. And if you can stomach the realness, at least wait for Peter Berg's The Kingdom instead. Message Boards: wow,im speechless | Home Of The Brave 2? THE BUZZ: The guy behind both Barbershop movies wants you to hear what the ladies have to say, and he turns to his Two Can Play That Game star to weave a comedy out of the conversations and scenarios previously seen in Beauty Shop and Nora's Hair Salon. Actually, just add a romantic angle to Barbershop's original storyline, turn Calvin Palmer into a female, and here you go ... Director: James Keach Stars: Chris Pine, Anjali Jay, Eddie Kaye Thomas (Full Cast) Studio: Samuel Goldwyn Films The Plot: Danny (Pine) is a a handsome young man who happens to be blind. And a virgin. Can he overcome a sweetly meddling older brother (Thomas) and the fact that the one woman (Jay) he's mutually interested in is locked in her upcoming arranged marriage?
THE BUZZ: Though it once appeared to be heading straight to DVD, Chris Pine's newfound status as an minor celebrity helped this sweet-natured sex comedy earn a limited theatrical release. Maybe the fact that it looks completely inoffensive is the film's tragic flaw. THE BUZZ: Chris Rolle is the hero, and the tag-team of Russell Simmons and Bruce Willis (?!) are the secret weapons in this documentary by first-time filmmaker Matt Ruskin. Director: Julia Loktev Stars: Luisa Williams (Full Cast) Studio: IFC First Take The Plot: An unstable young woman (Williams) gets off a bus in New York City, and sets about with her catastrophic mission. THE BUZZ: Director Julia Loktev's debut film has received high priase (including a pair of Independent Spirit nominations) for her take on domestic terrorism. With her nameless protagonist, low budget heroics (including a stellar sequence pulled off in Times Square without filming permits), and keeps-you-guessing story turns, DNDN is, in our opinion, the most anticipated mystery since Cache. Director: Chris Miller Raman Hui Stars: Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Pictures The Plot: When his new father-in-law, King Harold (John Cleese) falls ill, Shrek the ogre (Myers) is looked at as the heir to the land of Far, Far Away. Not one to give up his beloved swamp, Shrek recruits his friends Donkey (Murphy) and Puss (Antonio Banderas) to install the rebellious Artie (Justin Timberlake) as the new king. Princess Fiona (Diaz), however, rallies a band of royal girlfriends to fends off a coup d'etat by the jilted Prince Charming (Rupert Everett).
THE BUZZ: Shrek 3 as well as Shrek 4 (the latter is rumored to be the last film in the franchise) were greenlighted before the wildly successful second film was released. This third installment will find the orge trading barbs with King Arthur (voiced by Justin Timberlake) and his knights, and the final installment will be a prequel of sorts. The anti-Timberlake contigent has made their presence known on blogs and message boards alike, but don't they see the joke in his voicing a spoiled prince? Even better casting is the arsenal of comediennes who will back Princess Fiona in her battle with Prince Charming: Amy Sedaris, Maya Rudolph, Cheri Oteri ... Director: Hal Hartley Stars: Parker Posey, Jeff Goldblum, Liam Aiken (Full Cast) Studio: Magnolia Pictures The Plot: A seven-years-later continuation of Henry Fool, where Fay Grim (Posey) is coerced by a CIA agent (Goldblum) to try and locate notebooks that belonged to her fugitive ex-husband (Ryan). Published in them is information that could compromise the security of the U.S., causing Fay to first head to Paris to fetch them ...
THE BUZZ: No offense to either Hal Hartley or Parker Posey, but: instead of this sequel, why not just make a new movie together? Reunite with Martin Donovan, brainstorm a storyline over a few long weeekends, shoot it in digital, and score a day-and-date release with HDNet. THE BUZZ: Re: Wendell Baker -- Like it or not, the indie con artist will never die. Our question to Luke Wilson, however: why go the familiar route in your directorial debut? Surely the thinktank that helped dream up Bottle Rocket have more original thoughts in their collective head. And don't all the Wilsons owe us a little more than what they have brought to cinemas of late? Apparently Luke and his co-director brother Andrew have learned one important thing from Wes Anderson: steep your projects in decadal nostalgia, and critics will have a hard time giving you a flat out thumbs down. THE BUZZ: This Sundance award-winner has warmed the cockles of the crankiest indie critics, who all seem to agree that John Carney's verité direction gives his otherwise-wispy story some fantastic edges. Theaters sure are crowded these days, though; here's to a hopeful second life on DVD. Message Boards: Surprisingly boring | About Once, and one question (please answer!!) THE BUZZ: If Forest Whitaker hadn't one the Oscar this year, Even Money, an interlocking drama that sounds like Crash meets Lucky You (ugh), probably wouldn't have earned a proposed national release. A better marketing campaign: Quietly slip this on to store shelves and the Netflix recommends engine, with a collage of all the famous faces, and let consumer curiosity take its natural course. Director: Christopher Smith Stars: Danny Dyer, Laura Harris, Tim McInnerny (Full Cast) Studio: Magnolia Pictures The Plot: A woodsy retreat turns deadly for a group of people employed by an international weapons manufacturer, as enemies of their trade come calling.
THE BUZZ: In the old days, Severance would have been the feature shown after, say, Shaun of the Dead, and disciples of that beloved horror-comedy already know that the right way to approach this slasher-comedy is with seriously lowered expectations. Director: Gore Verbinski Stars: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley (Full Cast) Studio: Buena Vista Pictures The Plot: As the threat to pirates-at-large near its climax, Will Turner (Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Knightley) form an alliance with surprise accomplice Captain Barbossa (Rush) and sail to the Far East in order to save Jack Sparrow from the mysterious afterworld known as Davey Jones's Locker.
THE BUZZ: So the film that was never supposed to be a success has become the first post-LOTR mega-franchise (Dead Man's Chest will be one of the top 5 high-grossest movies ever), and Disney isn't making sure it doesn't exit quietly ito the night. So of course the production sounds like chaos on the high seas; however, the cast and crew must be used to the stop-start production schedule and scriptless endeavors that made DMC the rousing spectacle of 2006. For their curtain call, look for the ribald humor and effects-driven adventure to be ratcheted-up to the point where you ... can't quite tell what's going on. But we love these characters and this cast, and adding Chow Yun-Fat and Keith Richards to the last leg is an indication that suckage is not in the forecast. The pair is relatively isolated, except for the bug infestation problem that triggers their respective psychological issues.
THE BUZZ: Tracy Letts adapts his own stage play for director Friedkin, who just might be flirting with his first bona fide commercial success in years. We thought the film was more psychodrama and less agoraphobic horror, but as it has thawed out from its initial winter release date, we realize this one has summer matinee written all over it. Leading the group is psychotherapist Dr. Atsuko Chiba and her alter-ego -- a fearless young woman who goes by the code name Paprika.
THE BUZZ: Satoshi Kon has posse. Anime fans started worshipping his stories of fractured reality from Perfect Blue on up to his recent Cartoon Network series, "Paranoia Agent". All he and Sony Classics need to hope for is that the movie-going public that admonishes Hollywood for its animated tripe doesn't commit a crime of disinterest here. THE BUZZ: We don't normally equate Lars von Trier with breezy comedy, but his latest film is just that: an officeplace comedy that brings to mind his 1998 work, The Idiots. Actually, the director has joked that he's just managed to make another film in which an idealist's well-meaning intentions mess up an otherwise normal situation.
