Director: Peyton Reed Stars: Jennifer Aniston, Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: After Brooke (Aniston) calls it quits with her boyfriend Gary (Vaughn), neither person is willing to move out of the condo they share. Taking the advice of their repsective friends and confidants (and a few total strangers), they both engage in mental warfare designed to force the other person to flee the premises -- until they both realize they might be fighting to keep their relationship alive.
THE BUZZ: Jen and Vince weren't the hottest newsmakers in the weeks leading up to their joint project's release: no baby births in Namibia, no offical declaration of their love, little interest in promoting their film. Even the industry seemed to turn its back on the couple (murmurs of tankage and unfriendly reviews), but none of it ultimately seemed to matter, as The B-U dethroned The X-M with an opening weekend just shy of $40 million. We're eager to see how it holds up in the dailies (still holding strong at $2+ million a day!), and what Jen's next project will be (Vince is gearing up for a small role in Sean Penn's Into the Wild). Director: Pierre Morel Stars: Cyril Raffaelli, David Belle (Full Cast) Studio: Magnolia Pictures The Plot: Set in the ghettos of Paris in 2010, an undercover cop (Raffaelli) and ex-thug (Belle) try to infiltrate a gang in order to defuse a neutron bomb.
THE BUZZ: Proflic writer-producer Luc Besson steers director Pierre Morel's debut in what could be the most promising action import of the year. If you have seen virutally any French action movie, you'll recognize Cyril Raffaelli; co-star David Belle doesn't have much of an on-screen resume, but he's a parkour master with, apparently, a heart of gold. Paris is going through the whole fear/urban decay thing that's spawned films such as Escape from New York and The Warriors; no wonder the trailer feels so familiar. And looks totally total. Director: Kyung-Taek Kwak Stars: Dong-Kun Jang, Jung-Jae Lee (Full Cast) Studio: DreamWorks SKG The Plot: To avenge the death of his family members, a North Korean pirate concocts a catastrophic plan involving nuclear waste and a typhoon that is forecasted to hit the Korean Peninsula.
THE BUZZ: DreamWorks' first South Korean acquisition was a blockbuster in its native country, but Western audiences haven't sparked to the effects-heavy action film thus far. Why do we feel as though this will fare worse than Night Watch did earlier this year? Message Boards: Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews

Director: Joel Silverman Stars: Harland Williams, Corey Sevier, Ryan Carnes (Full Cast) Studio: Slow Hand Releasing The Plot: In Laguna Beach, a group of high school misfits buddy up with a drunken ex-pro in order to defeat the B.M.O.C. at the area's upcoming surf contest. Director: Victor Salva Stars: Scott Mechlowicz, Nick Nolte, Amy Smart (Full Cast) Studio: DEJ Productions The Plot: Collegiate gymnast Dan Millman (Mechlowicz) strikes up a friendship with Socrates (Nolte), an older man who becomes the athlete's mentor and opens his mind to a new way of living and thinking.
THE BUZZ: For some reason, Universal is re-releasing controversial director Victor Salva's latest project ... and giving tickets away ... for free. The kindest reviews suggest that Salva's attempt at personal redemption falls flat, though his actors try their best to divert your attention from the film's voyeuristic tendencies and pat melodrama. Director: John Lasseter Joe Ranft Stars: Owen Wilson, Bonnie Hunt, Paul Newman (Full Cast) Studio: Buena Vista Pictures The Plot: En route to a big race, a hot-shot stock-car known as Lightning McQueen (Wilson) gets waylaid in the town of Radiator Springs. During his idle time, McQueen befriends some locals who help him begin to realize that there might be more important things in life than fame and fortune.
THE BUZZ: With an impressive opening, despite less-than-stellar expectations, Cars should stay the course even with Garfield 2 on its tail and Superman Returns looking to be a movie made not for families, but for men with low self esteem ... Director: Robert Altman Stars: Lily Tomlin, Meryl Streep, Woody Harrelson (Full Cast) Studio: Picturehouse Entertainment The Plot: A look at what goes on backstage during the last broadcast of America's most celebrated radio show, where a country music siren (Streep), singing cowboys Dusty (Reilly) and Lefty (Harrelson), and a host of others hold court.
THE BUZZ: Leave it to, of all people, Garrison Keillor to bring red and blue staters together; on just 760 screens, APHC brought in a robust $4.67 million in its opening weekend. Prepare for an all-out marketing assault over the next couple weeks as the curiosity factor should bring good returns for Altman, Streep, Tomlin, Lohan, et al. THE BUZZ: The horror remake genre continues to prove impossible to predict, as we doubt anyone -- even Fox execs -- could've guessed John Moore's redo would make $40 million in its first week. Guess that's what an able director, smarter-than-average leads, and a demonic release date will yield for you ... Message Boards: Religious movies that have no God. | Why did the priests.... Director: James Marsh Stars: Gael García Bernal, William Hurt, Laura Harring (Full Cast) Studio: THINKFilm The Plot: Elvis (Bernal), the illegitimate son of an upstanding Texas preacher (Hurt), returns to his hometown after a 20-year absence. When his dad spurns him a second time, Elvis dedicates himself to taking the man's life apart piece-by-piece. THE BUZZ: We once thought The King could be this year's Crash -- a small film with big chances to find an audience and earn awards. With a screenplay by the Oscar-nominated Milo Addica (Monster's Ball) and the dreamy father-son combo of Hurt and Bernal, everything seemed in place for the picture to succeed. Then came the early reviews. At Cannes, the filmmakers were called nihilists (yes!), and few think fans of Gael Garcia Bernal will buy into his shady character, especially since he tries to seduce his half-sister in the film. We like Bernal in drag and on diving boards, not leceherous Bernal, sorry. Message Boards: Badlands | soundtrack Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews

Director: Priyadarshan Kookie V. Gulati Stars: Shahid Kapur, Kareena Kapoor, Om Puri (Full Cast) Studio: UTV Motion Pictures The Plot: A botched suicide attempt lands small-time hustler Jeet (Shahid Kapoor) in the nets of two fishermen who mistakenly believe him to be wealthy. The fishermen hatch a plan to cash in on Jeetu's value, though things quickly go awry. Jeetu's attention is diverted by one of the men's niece, who has just been shamed after her arranged marriage is called off. THE BUZZ: This remake of Punjabi House should continue the success Indian film has found in the U.S. this year. Om Puri supports two of the hotter young Bollywood stars, Shahid and Kareena Kapoor (no relation). Director: Jared Hess Stars: Jack Black, Ana de la Reguera, Efren Ramirez (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Pictures The Plot: An unskilled cook (Jack Black) at a Mexican monastery moonlights as a Lucha Libre wrestler in order to provide better food for his orphans, and to win the favor of the beautiful Sister Encarnación (Ana de la Reguera).
THE BUZZ: Ready to finally donate that "Vote for Pedro" tee to Goodwill? Jared Hess follows up Napoleon Dynamite with a comedy loosely based on the story of a priest who moonlighted as a luchador on the Mexican professional wrestling circuit. Unless Black's antics have worn thin with audiences, Hess should have another cult hit on his hands, making him more and more attractive to studios; hopefully he'll be inspired to write and direct original stories instead of, say, taking on a Marvel movie or remake of a comedy classic. The director co-wrote this screenplay with his wife, Jerusha, and one of our favorites, Mike White. Message Boards: I didn't *get* this | Nun is freaking gorgeous!!!! Getting involved in the world of drift racing, he finds himself quickly in debt, and the only way to repay is to enter the Tokyo underworld.
THE BUZZ: First Vin Diesel abandoned this franchise, and now Paul Walker? What does it say when you can't even get Paul Walker to sign to your movie? If they're lucky, the addition of director Lin (Better Luck Tomorrow) and the underground appeal of drift racing (relatively speaking, it's as big as NASCAR, except illegal) will inject some new kind of adrenaline into the mix. Director: Alejandro Agresti Stars: Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: A lonely doctor (Bullock) begins exchanging love letters with a frustrated architect (Reeves) through a mysterious postbox.
THE BUZZ: It's good to see two fortysomething, non-blondes in a Hollywood romance. This remake of the fab South Korean film Siworae finds Argentine director Alejandro Agresti (Valentin) positioned to break through stateside. $5 says the original's sci-fi component will be diminished here, though the idea of a time-traveling Sandra Bullock is oddly compelling. Maybe she could go back and not make Miss Congeniality 2 ... Here's the teaser trailer, featuring voiceover that sounds as if it were provided by entirely different actors. Keep you ears peeled for Keanu delivering this stellar dialogue: "I bought a house. On the lake. It's beautiful. Seductive, even." Sounds like Coldplay lyrics. THE BUZZ: As one of its first post-Weinstein acquisitions, Miramax scored Game at the Toronto Film Festival after audiences sparked to the picture. More than ten years after Hoop Dreams, it's about time lady ballers got their due. A case of mistaken cat identity finds Garfield ruling over a castle, but his reign is soon jeopardized by the nefarious Lord Dargis (Connolly), who has designs on the estate.

THE BUZZ: 2006's gay pride season kicks off with this version of the enduring comic strip (look for Queens and Poster Boy later this summer), and the sexed-up Ethan is poised to lead the pack -- despite the fact that it seems to have left advance audiences divided. Meredith Baxter plays Ethan's mom (she's a gay wedding planner!) and a pair of recognizable character actors camping it up as the Hat Sisters. THE BUZZ: Jeez, another Kevin Bacon vanity project? He and his wife must sit around and dream up bizarre sexual movies they think can win them Oscars. Guaranteed to split audiences in two, Loverboy barely caused a stir at Sundance, despite the controversial subject matter and handful of legit actors. But complications arise when the remote starts to overrule his choices.
THE BUZZ: Does this sound a bit like Bruce Almighty? Back in 2003, Bruce writers Steve Koren and Mark O'Keefe's spec script was purchased by Columbia as an ideal project for Sandler. After a few production delays, the comedian cozied up to the director who guided The Waterboy, one of his biggest successes to date. Don't let Click's dramatic overtones fool you into thinking this is another form of Spanglish, as we hear the script is very funny and the production went so well that the film was pushed into summer blockbuster season. THE BUZZ: Despite performances by U2, Linda Thompson, Rufus Wainwright, and others, Lian Lunson's documentary has been smacked on the nose by more than one reviewer for failing to delve into what caused his subject to retreat from the spotlight in favor of a Zen monastery, and what influenced his return to the stage. THE BUZZ: We hear that Larry Clark's sixth film is reportedly a little funnier than you'd expect, and it positions South Central as a safer environment than the streets of Hollywood and Beverly Hills for some kids. Most of the main actors are playing versions of themselves, and the cultural focus here is on punk rockers who don't want much to do with the norms of their neighborhood. THE BUZZ: Mystery Train's Masatoshi Nagase stars in the second film of Yôji Yamada's samurai trilogy that began with the Oscar-nominated Twilight Samurai. THE BUZZ: An evil, regal Streep and a lovely, innocent Hathaway make this confection all the sweeter -- though don't keep your expectations high. Like the book, we expect the movie to be mostly concept with little substance. And psst, lean in closer... rumor has it Vogue editrix Anna Wintour (on whom Streep's character is reportedly based) is none too pleased with the movie, and was using her powers to keep the movie from filming in key fashion locations. Director: Bryan Singer Stars: Brandon Routh, Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: After a mysterious absence of several years, the Man of Steel (Routh) returns to Metropolis, only to find Lex Luthor (Spacey) is back to his old tricks -- and Lois Lane (Bosworth) may have moved on.
THE BUZZ: The poster for this movie should be a revolving door, since so many directors and stars have come and gone we don't remember who did what when. Singer abandoned X3 for this, and ironically, new X3 director Brett Ratner was once attached. After a Scarlett O'Hara-style search, newcomer Routh was picked to fill out the red and blue tights, and Bosworth trumped a number of other actresses for the role of Lois Lane. Warner Bros. is betting heavy on this, and you can bet there are knives out as well as fanboys. All we can say is, you better not mess up, Mr. Singer. Given the interest An Inconvenient Truth has generated, look for Sony Pictures Classics to step up their promotion for the film in the coming weeks.
