THE BUZZ: Thanks to Emily Rose, this turn-of-the-century horror film gets a wide release. Purporting the same "based on actual events" marketing tag, Haunting goes a step further than most films of its kind; it offers an answer as to what happened to the family, and the truth of behind the Legend of the Bell Witch. Looks to thrill fans of jump-cut scares, and we hear Sutherland has a ball with his role, and Rachel Hurd-Wood (first seen in Peter Pan) is excellent.

THE BUZZ: Can Zwigoff (Ghost World) go 2-for-2 with adaptations of Dan Clowes's comics? This one is a tougher sell, since Confidential doesn't have the long-form cool of its predecessor (it's a one-page story, and available in Twentieth Century Eightball), or the appeal of having Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson in its cast -- but it is one of Clowes's most popular strips ever. Zwigoff and Clowes co-wrote the screenplay, and Zwigoff deserves credit for his dead-ringer casting of Minghella as Jerome.

THE BUZZ: Known as the most expensive Chinese film to date, the latest from director Kaige (Farewell My Concubine) boasts cinematography by Peter Pau (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and stunt coordinator Dion Lam (Infernal Affairs, Spiderman 2). Originally a Weinstein Company release, Warner Independent picked up rights to the film after Harvey and Bob disagreed with the producers on how the film should be marketed (the Weinsteins saw it as an art house film, while the Chinese backers wanted a full-scale Oscar campaign).

THE BUZZ: Let's hope adulthood will serve Ms. Lohan better than her shaky tween years, as she says goodbye to her childhood with two upcoming roles: a sullen teen poetess in A Prairie Home Companion (imagine) and some vaguely described woman in Bobby. Just My Luck was officially her first "mature" role, though it opened weakly and then clung tenaciously to the #10 position as if it were taunting the young star.

THE BUZZ: This first film in a planned trilogy was originally set up with director Michael Winterbottom and star Diego Luna. Retooled for "CSI" vet Danny Cannon and the pillow-lipped Kuno Becker (Lucía, Lucía), we hear the script's roughness has been smoothed out for easy digestion. Cameos from Becks and Zinédine Zidane will thrill sports fans, but is it enough to get them off the field and away from their TVs? The producers must feel like they have an international hit on their hands, as Goal! 2 is nearly completed.

THE BUZZ: The feature debut by Scott Marshall (son of Gary, nephew of Penny) won the audience award at last year's U.S. Comedy Arts Festival. And after cutting his teeth behind the scenes on dad's box office hits like The Princess Diaries and Runaway Bride, it's safe to say Marshall knows more than just a smidgen about turning familiar family schmaltz into big time laughs. Plus, if you get a kick out of Ari Gold schvitzing over HBO's Hollywood heartthrob, you're going to love Piven doing the same schtik with a precocious 13-year old.

THE BUZZ: Star/co-writer Patty Considine and director/co-writer Shane Meadows have been pals since college, and Shoes is their five-years-in-the-making response to the small town atrocities they have witnessed. Genre fans have been eating up the film's mix of horror, comedy, and social realism, with co-star Tony Kebbell (who made his film debut here) turning heads as Considine's tortured little brother. If this doesn't catch on in theaters, look for it to enjoy a renaissance on DVD.

THE BUZZ: Strange that the beloved Grant couldn't find backers in his adoptive home of England, especially with this cast. An international film festival hit, we hear the film's social tone is light, so you'll have to look elsewhere for politicized drama. We're interested to see how About a Boy's Hoult is growing up, and how Watson's parenting skills compare to Richardson's. Lucky boy.

THE BUZZ: Despite losing Jim Carrey as the main voice actor (he was replaced by Willis), DreamWorks banked on director Tim Johnson to get back his Antz magic after his last outing, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas sank like a stone. THE BUZZ: Five bucks says Twelve will be marketed and received like its contemporaries, namely Mean Creek and Mysterious Skin. Though the story deals with issues of underage sexuality and emotional frailty, we understand it's decidedly less controversial than director Michael Cuesta's first film, L.I.E. As with Crash and American Gun, the film looks to comment on the proliferation of guns in our society.

THE BUZZ: Sure, chapter three opened huge and surpassed nearly everyone's expectations, but the film's 67% drop in its second weekend confirmed that fans are willing to experience director Brett Ratner's "vision" only once. Ratner moves on to Rush Hour 3 while the mutants lick their wounds; future films might include origin projects for Wolverine and Magneto ... look for the former project first ...

THE BUZZ: Al Gore is promoting this film, a beefed-up version of the lecture he's toured with for years, as if he were running a second presidential campaign. (Apparently, he's not.) In an effort to get the word out on the cause, the former POTUS hopeful hit Sundance and caused a media frenzy at Cannes. And it worked, as the doc cracked the top ten despite being in fewer than 100 theaters. Can Paramount Classics keep the heat on this one?

THE BUZZ: Bollywood superstars Kajol (Sometimes Happiness, Sometimes Sorrow) and Aamir Khan (Lagaan) join forces for director Kunal Kohli, whose previous films, Hum Tum and Mujhse Dosti Karoge!, have fared rather well in the states. Look for this to be his biggest film to date. It's worth noting that Khan's left-leaning politics have jeopardized the film's release in his native country; his last film, Rang de basanti, was yanked from theaters back in April.
