Director: Courtney Solomon Stars: Donald Sutherland, Sissy Spacek, Rachel Hurd-Wood (Full Cast) Studio: Freestyle Releasing The Plot: During the early part of the 19th century, in Red River, Tennessee, the Bell family is tormented by a spirit that promises to kill one of the family members.
THE BUZZ: Thanks to Emily Rose, this turn-of-the-century horror film gets a wide release. Purporting the same "based on actual events" marketing tag, Haunting goes a step further than most films of its kind; it offers an answer as to what happened to the family, and the truth of behind the Legend of the Bell Witch. Looks to thrill fans of jump-cut scares, and we hear Sutherland has a ball with his role, and Rachel Hurd-Wood (first seen in Peter Pan) is excellent. Director: Terry Zwigoff Stars: Max Minghella, Sophia Myles, John Malkovich (Full Cast) Studio: Sony Pictures Classics The Plot: Convinced that art school will put him on the path to fame, Jerome (Minghella) must come to terms with his barely-there talent, and the fact that the girl of his dreams has fallen in love with another student. Then, strangely, he's arrested as a suspected murderer, only to discover that crime might actually pay.
THE BUZZ: Can Zwigoff (Ghost World) go 2-for-2 with adaptations of Dan Clowes's comics? This one is a tougher sell, since Confidential doesn't have the long-form cool of its predecessor (it's a one-page story, and available in Twentieth Century Eightball), or the appeal of having Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson in its cast -- but it is one of Clowes's most popular strips ever. Zwigoff and Clowes co-wrote the screenplay, and Zwigoff deserves credit for his dead-ringer casting of Minghella as Jerome. Message Boards: Different Types of Art Kids | Would you ever pose nude? Director: J.J. Abrams Stars: Tom Cruise, Michelle Monaghan, Ving Rhames (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Pictures The Plot: Newly married, semi-retired secret agent Ethan Hunt (Cruise) is once again dispatched by the IMF; this time, he confronts a ruthless arms dealer (Hoffman) who will stop at nothing to obtain a mysterious, deadly object.
THE BUZZ: No real offense meant to Mr. Cruise, but there's something karmic in the notion that Over the Hedge stands to make more money than M:I:3 in the States. Director: Wil Shriner Stars: Logan Lerman, Luke Wilson, Brie Larson (Full Cast) Studio: New Line Cinema The Plot: A young man (Lerman) moves from Montana to Florida with his family, where he's compelled to engage in a fight to protect a population of endangered owls. THE BUZZ: You're thinking, "Owls?" But don't make fun; two years ago no one would have said a documentary on penguins would have had a chance. Hoot is like a Pixar movie come to life, and I'd rather watch defiant, environmentally friendly teens than some petulant layabouts. Director: Kaige Chen Stars: Cecilia Cheung, Dong-gun Jang (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Independent Pictures (WIP) The Plot: Empowered by the love of a slave (Dong-kun), a royal concubine (Cheung) is given the chance to make an extraordinary decision.
THE BUZZ: Known as the most expensive Chinese film to date, the latest from director Kaige (Farewell My Concubine) boasts cinematography by Peter Pau (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and stunt coordinator Dion Lam (Infernal Affairs, Spiderman 2). Originally a Weinstein Company release, Warner Independent picked up rights to the film after Harvey and Bob disagreed with the producers on how the film should be marketed (the Weinsteins saw it as an art house film, while the Chinese backers wanted a full-scale Oscar campaign). Director: Alex Steyermark Stars: Michael Angarano, Sunny Mabrey, Cynthia Nixon (Full Cast) Studio: Magnolia Pictures The Plot: A young man (Angarano) with terminal cancer is granted a dying wish, which turns out to be a request for a date with a supermodel (Mabrey). Little does he know her messy, self-destructive lifestyle does not make for a dream come true.
THE BUZZ: Ethan Hawke goes uncredited as Michael Angarano's dead father in this dicey sounding comedy from director Alex Steyermark (Prey for Rock & Roll. And that's not the only star support he gets; Gina Gershon plays Nikki's exasperated agent. Director: Wolfgang Petersen Stars: Richard Dreyfuss, Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: After a tidal wave causes a luxury ocean liner to capsize, a handful of survivors endeavor to find a way to the water's surface.

Director: Donald Petrie Stars: Lindsay Lohan, Chris Pine (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: Sexy Manhattanite Ashley (Lohan) is known to many as the luckiest woman around. After a chance encounter with a down-and-out young man (Pine), however, she realizes that she's swapped her fortune for his.
THE BUZZ: Let's hope adulthood will serve Ms. Lohan better than her shaky tween years, as she says goodbye to her childhood with two upcoming roles: a sullen teen poetess in A Prairie Home Companion (imagine) and some vaguely described woman in Bobby. Just My Luck was officially her first "mature" role, though it opened weakly and then clung tenaciously to the #10 position as if it were taunting the young star. Director: Danny Cannon Stars: Kuno Becker, Alessandro Nivola, Anna Friel (Full Cast) Studio: Buena Vista Pictures The Plot: An incredible sequence of events finds Santiago (Becker), a Los Angeleno with a lifelong dream to play professional soccer, granted a tryout with Newcastle United.
THE BUZZ: This first film in a planned trilogy was originally set up with director Michael Winterbottom and star Diego Luna. Retooled for "CSI" vet Danny Cannon and the pillow-lipped Kuno Becker (Lucía, Lucía), we hear the script's roughness has been smoothed out for easy digestion. Cameos from Becks and Zinédine Zidane will thrill sports fans, but is it enough to get them off the field and away from their TVs? The producers must feel like they have an international hit on their hands, as Goal! 2 is nearly completed. Message Boards: 5 top players (all Time) | Another racist movie.... Director: Scott Marshall Stars: Jeremy Piven, Garry Marshall, Daryl Sabara (Full Cast) Studio: Miramax Films The Plot: Benjamin Fiedler (Sabara) uses his upcoming bar mitzvah to reconcile the strained relationship between his father (Piven) and grandfather (Marshall).
THE BUZZ: The feature debut by Scott Marshall (son of Gary, nephew of Penny) won the audience award at last year's U.S. Comedy Arts Festival. And after cutting his teeth behind the scenes on dad's box office hits like The Princess Diaries and Runaway Bride, it's safe to say Marshall knows more than just a smidgen about turning familiar family schmaltz into big time laughs. Plus, if you get a kick out of Ari Gold schvitzing over HBO's Hollywood heartthrob, you're going to love Piven doing the same schtik with a precocious 13-year old. Director: Kevin Keating Stars: Rudolph W. Giuliani (Full Cast) Studio: Cinema Libre Studio The Plot: A documentary that investigates the 'new' New York City that then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani claimed he helped create. THE BUZZ: Kevin Keating and his crew dig into Giuliani's pre-9/11 career as contenders for the 2008 presidential election are coming forward. It's no secret that Giuliani has been tipped as one of the Republican frontrunners, and now the major issues he has taken credit for fixing up during his administration (crime, welfare reform, First Amendment rights) have come under the microscope. Director: David Jacobson Stars: Edward Norton, Evan Rachel Wood, David Morse (Full Cast) Studio: THINKFilm The Plot: Tobe (Wood) discovers passion and excitement for the first time in Harlan (Norton), a displaced cowboy who is ill-suited for the city of Los Angeles. Despite their differences, and the protests of of Tobe's father (Morse), she pursues a relationship with her mystery man, until she finds he is not at all whom he appeared to be.
THE BUZZ: Rumor has it DitV is stunning but overlong, which could prove maddening for those who go see it only for the reportedly steamy scenes between Norton and Wood. David (Dahmer) Jacobson's direction is said to match the intensity of his two stars as he yearns to showcase LA's Western and urban disparity, and a man who represents the imbalance. Director: Shane Meadows Stars: Paddy Considine, Gary Stretch, Toby Kebbell (Full Cast) Studio: Magnolia Pictures The Plot: A disaffected soldier (Considine) returns home with a singular purpose in mind: to get even with a the gang members who brutalized his mentally-challenged brother (Kebbell) years before.
THE BUZZ: Star/co-writer Patty Considine and director/co-writer Shane Meadows have been pals since college, and Shoes is their five-years-in-the-making response to the small town atrocities they have witnessed. Genre fans have been eating up the film's mix of horror, comedy, and social realism, with co-star Tony Kebbell (who made his film debut here) turning heads as Considine's tortured little brother. If this doesn't catch on in theaters, look for it to enjoy a renaissance on DVD. Director: Richard E. Grant Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Miranda Richardson, Emily Watson (Full Cast) Studio: Samuel Goldwyn Films The Plot: The semi-autobiographical telling of young Richard E. Grant's time in Swaziland during waning years of British colonial rule.
THE BUZZ: Strange that the beloved Grant couldn't find backers in his adoptive home of England, especially with this cast. An international film festival hit, we hear the film's social tone is light, so you'll have to look elsewhere for politicized drama. We're interested to see how About a Boy's Hoult is growing up, and how Watson's parenting skills compare to Richardson's. Lucky boy. Director: Sydney Pollack Stars: Frank O. Gehry, Sydney Pollack, Julian Schnabel (Full Cast) Studio: Sony Pictures Classics The Plot: Frank Gehry's friends, associates, and his therapist illustrate the renown architect's creative ambition and process.
THE BUZZ: If Sydney Pollack's documentary truly does steer clear of Gehry's personal life, our initial question is: Why bother? Upon learning that we get to see him turn sketches into cardboard models, then models into buildings, we're already transfixed. Pair with My Architect for an evening of the highest brow entertainment. Clues hidden in the works of Leonardo Da Vinci lead them to a religious mystery protected by a secret society for two thousand years.
THE BUZZ: The Oscar-winning team behind A Beautiful Mind gets even more cerebral with TDVC, the most high-profile bestseller adaptation since Harry Potter. And the most successful, with a worldwide box office tally over $700 million. Director Ron Howard, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, producer Brian Grazer, and star Tom Hanks are being courted to make Angels & Demons, novelist Dan Brown's first adventure involving symbologist Robert Langdon. Director: Tim Johnson Karey Kirkpatrick Stars: Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling, Gene Wilder (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Pictures The Plot: A mischievous racoon and his sensitive best-buddy turtle along with other forest creatures try to resist the evils and temptations of encroaching suburbia.
THE BUZZ: Despite losing Jim Carrey as the main voice actor (he was replaced by Willis), DreamWorks banked on director Tim Johnson to get back his Antz magic after his last outing, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas sank like a stone. The wise move here was bringing writer Karey Kirkpatrick (James and the Giant Peach) to co-direct, and Brother Bear's Lorne Cameron and David Hoselton to assist with the screenplay. Director: Michael Cuesta Stars: Conor Donovan, Jesse Camacho, Zoe Weizenbaum (Full Cast) Studio: IFC Films The Plot: When a young boy is murdered by local bullies, three kids contend with issues of grief, love, self-esteem, and a brother's desire for revenge. THE BUZZ: Five bucks says Twelve will be marketed and received like its contemporaries, namely Mean Creek and Mysterious Skin. Though the story deals with issues of underage sexuality and emotional frailty, we understand it's decidedly less controversial than director Michael Cuesta's first film, L.I.E. As with Crash and American Gun, the film looks to comment on the proliferation of guns in our society. Director: Brett Ratner Stars: Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: A cure for "mutancy," the resurrection of a lost comrade, and the escalating tensions between mutants and humans threaten to trigger the war to end all wars.
THE BUZZ: Sure, chapter three opened huge and surpassed nearly everyone's expectations, but the film's 67% drop in its second weekend confirmed that fans are willing to experience director Brett Ratner's "vision" only once. Ratner moves on to Rush Hour 3 while the mutants lick their wounds; future films might include origin projects for Wolverine and Magneto ... look for the former project first ... Director: Davis Guggenheim Stars: Al Gore (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Vantage The Plot: A documentary on Al Gore's crusade to raise awareness on the issue of global warming.
THE BUZZ: Al Gore is promoting this film, a beefed-up version of the lecture he's toured with for years, as if he were running a second presidential campaign. (Apparently, he's not.) In an effort to get the word out on the cause, the former POTUS hopeful hit Sundance and caused a media frenzy at Cannes. THE BUZZ: Bollywood superstars Kajol (Sometimes Happiness, Sometimes Sorrow) and Aamir Khan (Lagaan) join forces for director Kunal Kohli, whose previous films, Hum Tum and Mujhse Dosti Karoge!, have fared rather well in the states. Look for this to be his biggest film to date. It's worth noting that Khan's left-leaning politics have jeopardized the film's release in his native country; his last film, Rang de basanti, was yanked from theaters back in April. THE BUZZ: Five aspiring performers are the focus of Alexandra Shiva's documentary, but we hear her film is more about camp culture in general. We also hear the photography is terrible.
