Director: Uwe Boll Stars: Kristanna Loken, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Rodriguez (Full Cast) Studio: Romar Entertainment The Plot: A half-human, half-vampire woman (Loken) forges a pact with a team of warriors to prevent a vampire lord (Kingsley) from fulfilling a doomsday prophecy.
THE BUZZ: Uwe Boll makes such bad movies, he seems to have inspired more and more people to figure out how he manages to make a project every year. (The secret is his production company, which has no trouble raising money in Boll's native Germany, where the financial risk for making movies is next to nothing.) For his latest video game adaptation, we hear Boll marginally improves on his last film, the universally panned Alone in the Dark, though he still manages to make 90+ minutes feel like a walk through thick syrup. Next up? His 3-hour epic, Dungeon Seige. Message Boards: The REAL issue with this film, and Uwe Boll. | why do people dislike this film? Director: Eli Roth Stars: Jay Hernandez, Derek Richardson, Eythor Gudjonsson (Full Cast) Studio: Lions Gate Films The Plot: Three backpackers head to a Slovakian city that promises to meet their hedonistic expectations, with no idea of the hell that awaits them.

Director: Nicholaus Goossen Stars: Allen Covert, Linda Cardellini, Shirley Jones (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: Kicked to the curb by his roommates, a thirtysomething video game tester (Covert) moves in with his grandma and her two friends.
THE BUZZ: Is it just us, or is Adam Sandler's production company becoming more and more like a National Lampoon warehouse, cranking out one low brow, low budget comedy after another? This time around, Sandler underling Covert makes like Rob Schneider and David Spade before him, suffering through 80 to 90 minutes of harassment and sexual humiliation. Director: Kevin Reynolds Stars: James Franco, Sophia Myles, Rufus Sewell (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: The insuperable romance between an English knight (Franco) and the daughter (Myles) of the King of Ireland threatens the future of Britain.
THE BUZZ: Fans of dragons and song will be disappointed to learn that neither figure into the proceedings here. Instead this pet project of Ridley and Tony Scott is heavy on the romance, and reportedly has some stellar fighting sequences. Can a low profile period drama succeed where its big brothers and sisters have failed? Something tells us it depends on whether or not women (the target audience here) are drawn to the theater. Director: James Gartner Stars: Josh Lucas, Derek Luke (Full Cast) Studio: Buena Vista Pictures The Plot: Texas Western coach Don Haskins (Lucas) and his all-black starting five head to the NCAA tournament.
THE BUZZ: Originally set to star Affleck (who could have rebounded like Miracle or The Rookie with this sure-shot), Lucas ascended to the starring role when B.Aff's deal collapsed. It opened at #1, but remains to be seen whether this is Lucas's break-out movie, as its weekday yields are paltry. Director: Wayne Wang Stars: Queen Latifah, LL Cool J (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Pictures The Plot: After she's diagnosed with a terminal illness, Georgia Byrd (Latifah) decides to take a European vacation.
THE BUZZ: Thinking back to Living Out Loud, we love the idea of the Queen in another comedy/drama so much we're ignoring the fact that Wayne Wang is going to get all tinkly-music and wet-eyed with this remake. But can you believe she's now shilling for Wal-Mart? Review: 6 out 10 stars: In Last Holiday, director Wayne Wang works from a buttoned-up screenplay that squeezes the life out of its characters before allowing them to experience joy. Director: Cory Edwards Todd Edwards Stars: Anne Hathaway, Glenn Close, Patrick Warburton (Full Cast) Studio: Weinstein Company, The The Plot: Set at the end of the story of Little Red Riding Hood, police officers from the animal world investigate a report of a disturbance at Grandma's house. They discover two suspects, a weapon, numerous criminal offenses, and a potential connection to a case involving the elusive "Goody Bandit."
THE BUZZ: The Weinsteins scored this low-profile animated project at Cannes earlier this year. They proceeded to give it a high-profile Christmas release ... before burying it in January. But the joke's on us, I guess, as Hood and her pals debuted big in its opening weekend; it was originally thought to be the #1 movie, but lost to Glory Road in a photo-finish. This of course resulted in a sequel announcement: Hood vs. Evil. Review: 1 out of 10 stars:: If you're of a certain age, you remember these terrible, terrible live-action Pippi Longstocking movies from Sweden in the early 70s. Director: Trish Doolan Stars: Maria Cina, Trish Doolan (Full Cast) Studio: Regent Releasing The Plot: The intimate secret between April (Cina) and Alex (Doolan) comes out when Alex hosts April's wedding shower.
THE BUZZ: You are cordially invited to see some pre-wedding confusion, courtesy of quadruple-threat director Doolan. Rumor has it the film played so well in Europe that Doolan's going to film her next movie in Italy. We'll go see it, and not just because we're ramping up for season 3 of "The L Word" ... Director: Duncan Tucker Stars: Felicity Huffman, Kevin Zegers, Fionnula Flanagan (Full Cast) Studio: IFC Films The Plot: Bree (Huffman), a pre-operative transsexual, is stunned to learn that she fathered a son (Zegers) while in college. Just days before her long-awaited operation, she travels to New York City to bail the troubled kid out of jail and drive him to California.
THE BUZZ: From the end of Sports Night to the beginning of Desperate Housewives we periodically cursed the fact that so few directors had taken advantage of the glorious Huffman's talents. Thanks to the producers of L.I.E., she's been matched with writer-director Duncan Tucker, and the pairing looks to be mutually beneficial. Huffman's getting raves (the National Board of Review crowned her Best Actress, she's up for a Golden Globe); Tucker's debut will be forever known as the first film acquired by the WeinsteinCo -- Harvey and Bob's post-Miramax endeavor. But this of course will be overshadowed by Huffman's performance, the fact that she has a "whip it out" scene in the movie, and will hopefully win an Oscar for her efforts. Director: Len Wiseman Stars: Kate Beckinsale, Scott Speedman, Bill Nighy (Full Cast) Studio: Screen Gems The Plot: As the war between the Death Dealers and the Lycans nears a deciding battle, the war's origins are revealed, and Selene (Beckinsale), the vampire heroine, seeks revenge on her own kind after she's betrayed.
THE BUZZ: Sure, Underworld was a theatrical and DVD success, but fans ultimately felt underserved by the film's sense of history and gun-heavy action scenes. (Okay, maybe not "fans" as much as "me".) Director Les Wiseman sough to make a sequel that wouldn't skimp on chapter of history and buckets of blood. What this all means is: More Kate in leather! More cheesy slo-mo leaps from tall buildings! More lycans and vamps with guns! More ... Speedman! In the sequel to Beckinsale's breakout movie, we're promised a Dark Ages werewolf vs. vampire battle, and a glimpse of Corvinus, the father of both species! Review: 4 out of 10 stars: This picture is little more than a muddled epilogue to the story introduced in 2003's Underworld. Director: Terrence Malick Stars: Colin Farrell, Q'orianka Kilcher, Christopher Plummer (Full Cast) Studio: New Line Cinema The Plot: A chronicle of the adventurous life of Captain John Smith (Farrell), who helped settle the colony of Jamestown, Virginia in 1607, and his relationship with Pocahontas (Kilcher), the young Algonquian native who Smith claimed saved him from sure death.
THE BUZZ: Farrell as John Smith -- save us all. Here's hoping he has a better wig than the one in Alexander. Malick abandoned Che, his film about the Argentine revolutionary, for the drama of Jamestown; he'd been developing both projects simultaneously, but dropped Che abruptly despite the fact that it had already been picked up by foreign distributors. Sounds like he made the right move, as World caught fire at the end of 2005, with a handful of critics placing in on the top 10 lists. As per usual, Malick wanted to edit the picture up until its day of release; approximately 17 minutes of film were cut in the past couple weeks. Director: Jim Hanon Stars: Louie Leonardo, Chad Allen, Jack Guzman (Full Cast) Studio: Every Tribe Entertainment The Plot: In 1956, five missionaries are killed by the Waodani people of Ecudaor. The adult son of one of the murdered men leads a second group of missionaries into the Ecuadorian rainforest, and the encounter forever alters the lives of both peoples. THE BUZZ: The End of the Spear has the sort of grassroots momentum that spawns breakout successes. Based on true events that make a good read (check out the official site), the film's release is smartly timed to enrapture The New Worlders. Director: Albert Brooks Stars: Albert Brooks, Sheetal Sheth, John Carroll Lynch (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Independent Pictures (WIP) The Plot: The U.S. government dispatches comedian Albert Brooks to India and Pakistan in an effort to discover what makes Muslim people laugh.
THE BUZZ: Sony Pictures was originally set to distribute the film, until they balked over Brooks's unwillingness to alter the title. Director: Eugene Jarecki Stars: Gore Vidal, John McCain (Full Cast) Studio: Sony Pictures Classics The Plot: An examination on the influence the U.S. military has on American culture, its economy, and its foreign policy.
THE BUZZ: Jarecki follows up The Trials of Henry Kissinger with a polemic on the American military's domination over the government and economy - stretching his timeline back to the end of Dwight D. Eisenhower's presidency and up to our first strike on Baghdad in 2003. The film won fabulous prizes at Sundance and the Full Frame Documentary Festival in 2005. Director: Ol Parker Stars: Piper Perabo, Lena Headey, Matthew Goode (Full Cast) Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures The Plot: As she's walking up the aisle, a blushing bride (Perabo) locks eyes with an unexpected guest (Headey), and subsequently begins to reconsider much more than the idea of getting married.
THE BUZZ: Call it a Richard Curtis knock-off with a Sapphic twist. We hear Ol Parker's debut might be a little too tame for the gay audience (and good luck trying to wrangle attention away from Brokeback), but Fox Searchlight is hoping the film's good reviews and potential word-of-mouth will help it cross over to the mainstream. Frankly, we're more concerned about Perabo showcasing a British accent. Matthew Goode (Match Point) tallies his second noteworthy role of the year, but in the battle between him and Lena Headey, our pick is clear. Director: Justin Lin Stars: James Franco, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson (Full Cast) Studio: Buena Vista Pictures The Plot: A young man (Franco) who's good with his fists realizes his dream of attending the Annapolis Naval Academy.
THE BUZZ: Lin's Better Luck Tomorrow was so influential that Disney pulled him up from the minors to make their military vision a reality (three years, three boxing films -- what gives?). We think it'll take a nation of analysts and marketing types to determine this film's target audience, and then get them into theaters in January. We're holding out for Lin's remake of Oldboy, anyway. Review: 3 out of 10 stars: Maybe it was just because I was sick, but I found Annapolis to be the best thing for a cold since Nyquil. It calmed me, it soothed me, it helped me to forget about my stuffy sinuses and body aches, and ultimately it lulled me into a deep, pleasant sleep. THE BUZZ: The cuddly feel here (think: The Pacifier) helped Momma blow up upon its release, but it's fading fast ... Still, it adds polish to Martin's cleaner, soberer image. Too bad Emily Procter couldn't land a better role than this, though. Message Boards: I can't believe on commenting on this movie, but... | where was paul giamatti? Director: Kirk Jones Stars: Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: Governess Nanny McPhee (Thompson) uses magic to reign in the behavior of seven ne'er-do-well children in her charge.
THE BUZZ: Based on the widely-read (in the U.K.) Nurse Matilda series, this family movie is proving it has legs after a decent opening. And while it probably won't be turned into a franchise (maybe a direct-to-DVD sequel?), director Jones's follow-up to Waking Ned Devine is certainly a hit. Director: Michael Winterbottom Stars: Steve Coogan, Jeremy Northam (Full Cast) Studio: Picturehouse Entertainment The Plot: During production on his latest movie -- an adaptation of Laurence Sterne's so-called "unfilmable" novel, "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman" -- director Michael Winterbottom (Northam) wraps production for the day, and the audience is granted access to all the behind-the-scenes dirt on set.
THE BUZZ: Knowing that the real Winterbottom is being played by the wonderful Jeremy Northam, and that Steve Coogan (so amazing in Winterbottom's 24 Hour Party People) has the titular role, we'll assume this is less of an experiment than the premise would lead us to think. Because, otherwise ... ouch. Message Boards: Rob Brydon vs Steve Coogan | One Of The Worst Films Of All Time Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews | |||||

Director: Steven Soderbergh Stars: Debbie Doebereiner (Full Cast) Studio: Magnolia Pictures The Plot: Residents of a small Ohio town puzzle out the details of a murder which took place at the local toy factory.
THE BUZZ: Turn your turtleneck up if you're one of the people who think Soderbergh hasn't made a good film since Traffic. (Note that if you go further back to The Limey, you're inconsolable!) Bubble was smacked around on the festival circuit, where critics freely commented on Soderbergh's current status as a filmmaker in artistic decline. We counter with the fact that the director is at his most interesting of late, what with Bubble debuting in theaters, on DVD, and on high-definition cable TV -- all on the same day -- and his 6-picture deal with HDNet Films. And check this answer to an interviewer's question on whether he'd been to the movies lately: "I tried to go to a theater yesterday, but the fire alarm went off. The theater experience isn't always pleasant. Theater owners need to address that. There are often problems with projection; tickets and concessions are expensive; theaters aren't always clean; people talk during the movie. They're making it easy for people to stay home." Director: Lars von Trier Stars: (Full Cast) Studio: IFC Films The Plot: Grace Margaret Mulligan (Howard) leaves Dogville, Colorado with her father and travels to Alabama, where she happens upon Maderlay, a plantation operating as if slavery were never abolished.
THE BUZZ: von Trier's follow-up to Dogville is Kidman-less, and while it's not as celebrated as the first installment of the director's American trilogy (which was supposed to center around Kidman as Grace Mulligan), we're looking forward to watching Bryce Dallas Howard, who stepped in to play Ms. Mulligan.
