"I'm fine" is the half-hearted mantra of the central character in Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown, but the phrase could also describe the feel of film itself -- unconvincing and muddled, despite the cheery disposition sometimes plastered painfully across its surface.

After the general sense of confusion with which audiences met Vanilla Sky, Crowe has returned to familiar territory here, exploring the life of an individual and the family surrounding him, with Drew (Orlando Bloom) being the individual who has not one but two families -- his immediate family from Oregon, and his father's side of the family in Kentucky...more

Review: 5 out of 10 stars: Whereas American Beauty attempted to be about the quiet desperation of the American bourgeois, The Weather Man is about the grim dissatisfaction of the entertainment professional. For most people that aren't, in some regard, in show business, this movie will probably be a series of near-misses as it attempts to speak to them...more

Saw II (2005) -- Jigsaw locks a few unlucky people in a booby trapped shelter and they must find a way out before they inhale too much of a lethal nerve gas and die. But they must watch out, for the traps Jigsaw has set in the shelter lead to death also.

THE BUZZ: By now Saw's success story is old hat, and the movie's many fans and detractors are battling out the merits of the sequel online. We know that Amanda (Shawnee Smith) is back, and apparently she needs to learn another lesson. But we're also hearing that Beverley Mitchell, a.k.a the middle sister on 7th Heaven is the real scream queen here.

THE BUZZ: For his first major role, Greenberg slides up next to Thurman and Streep -- no performance anxiety there. Sandra Bullock was originally set to star, but rumor has it she wasn't satisfied with the script, and then it was all presto-changeo Uma. We smell Golden Globes and Independent Spirit Awards.

Sam gang yi (2004) -- An Asian cross-cultural trilogy of horror films from accomplished indie directors.

THE BUZZ: This sort-of sequel to Three boasts cross-the-board cinematography by Christopher Doyle and a penchant for wounded tongues. Dumplings, Chan's entry, is perhaps the best-received of the shorts, and you can probably find the feature version of it on eBay.

G

G [limited]

THE BUZZ: Writer-director Cherot has been quiet since Hav Plenty in the late 90s, but his latest film has the makings of a niche hit -- especially with Jones and Underwood in big roles.

Paradise Now (2005) -- Two childhood friends are recruited for a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv.

THE BUZZ: This harrowing film, which looks at 24 hours in the lives of its two central characters, went 3-for-4 at the Berlin Film Festival. But it didn't win the Golden Bear as everyone thought it would; in fact, one wire service announced that it had won before the nominations were even read.

New York Doll

New York Doll [LA/NY]

Director: Greg Whiteley
Stars: Arthur Kane, David Johansen, Sylvain Sylvain (Full Cast)
Studio: Vivendi Entertainment

The Plot: Arthur "Killer" Kane, a recovering alcoholic and recently converted Mormon, is invited to reunite with his band, glam rock pioneers The New York Dolls, some thirty years after their starry demise.

Photos (see all 15 | slideshow) Videos
New York Doll (2005) -- "Only On The Web": Irving Chais has run the New York Doll Hospital for over fifty years. Alexis Christoforous reports on why Chais has never lost a patient.

THE BUZZ: The casual music fan may be aware of, but not completely familiar with the music of the New York Dolls, the seminal rock group that spawned a million imitators. Such a quasi-awareness may make it sadly difficult for New York Doll, the story of Arthur "Killer" Kane (the group's bassist) to gain footing, but interviews with the likes of lead singer David Johansen and guitarist Sylvain Sylvain, not to mention Iggy Pop and Chrissie Hynde, should draw the music movie fans in dedicated, if not smaller droves, which could feed good word-of-mouth once the fascinating life of "Killer" is revealed.
