THE BUZZ: At least two factors are at work here, ones that should help make The Gospel a success: writer-director Hardy has handled all three chapters of the niche serial Trois, and film execs have learned from Diary of a Mad Black Woman that there's long been a market for spiritual films such as this. Director: Cameron Crowe Stars: Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, Susan Sarandon (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Pictures The Plot: During his trip back to Kentucky for his father's memorial, a dejected young man (Bloom) finds inspiration in the form of a flight attendant (Dunst).
THE BUZZ: 6 out of 10 stars: "I'm fine" is the half-hearted mantra of the central character in Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown, but the phrase could also describe the feel of film itself -- unconvincing and muddled, despite the cheery disposition sometimes plastered painfully across its surface. ...more Review: 6 out of 10 stars "I'm fine" is the half-hearted mantra of the central character in Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown, but the phrase could also describe the feel of film itself -- unconvincing and muddled, despite the cheery disposition sometimes plastered painfully across its surface. After the general sense of confusion with which audiences met Vanilla Sky, Crowe has returned to familiar territory here, exploring the life of an individual and the family surrounding him, with Drew (Orlando Bloom) being the individual who has not one but two families -- his immediate family from Oregon, and his father's side of the family in Kentucky...more Message Boards: Claire = Stalker | I for one thought it was great... THE BUZZ: As 2005 continues to be the horror genre's undoing, we can file The Fog among such luminaries as Boogeyman, House of Wax, Dark Water, Land of the Dead, Cursed, The Devil's Rejects ... THE BUZZ: Tony Scott's kinetic energy is slathered all over Domino's trailer. Even with aspects of the real Domino's life circumvented (she was an out lesbian), all we need to envision is Ms. Knightley spouting dialogue by Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko), and we're just about ready to shut out all of this season's man-with-gun pictures. THE BUZZ: Each vignette here is shot in real time, and the camera never moves from a single location. THE BUZZ: A time-jumping noir from one of our favorite directors, who adapted the novel by Rupert Holmes, sounds like just the thing for fall, and the ratings controversy raised toward the end of summer might edge more people into theaters than anyone first imagined. THE BUZZ: Sometime-Hollywood director Mandoki returned to his native Mexico and emerged with Voices, which was poised to win the Best Film prize at Mexico's Ariel Awards (it lost to another anticipated film, Duck Season). THE BUZZ: Kinda stoked for the feature version of Martin's perfectly simple novella, which became a major best-seller. THE BUZZ: TV writer Josh Stolberg is using Nicole Richie's small role (and her so-last-year feud with Paris Hilton) to hype America's release. Director: Marc Levin Stars: Marc Levin, Al Levin (Full Cast) Studio: HBO Films The Plot: A post-9/11 encounter with a taxi driver causes filmmaker Marc Levin to explore the rise of religious intolerance, particularly anti-Semitism.
THE BUZZ: The scope of Levin's endeavor here goes beyond the exploration of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a century-old forgery that outlines the Jews' plan to rule the world. Somehow, in just over 90 minutes, he addresses his own family history, Daniel Pearl's beheading, The Passion of the Christ, and other threads. Sounds fascinating, if not potentially muddled.
