Director: David O. Russell Stars: Jason Schwartzman, Jude Law, Naomi Watts (Full Cast) Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures The Plot: Drifting corporate sad sack Albert Markovski (Schwartzman) hires "existential detectives" Bernard and Vivian Jaffe (Hoffman and Tomlin) to help align his life. Focusing on his problems with Brad Stand (Law), Albert's fast-rising colleague at a chain of retail superstores, the Jaffes' exploits cause a chain reaction which, while beneficial to Albert, draw them into a battle with their nemesis, the French radical Caterine Vauban (Huppert).
THE BUZZ: What? What? With a premise that screams Charlie Kaufman (on a road trip with Macaulay Culkin's weed and Xanax) and a fabulous spoof site, David O. Russell seems bent on confusing the multiplex with his fourth film. One thing's for sure, from the film festival circuit, he's certainly befuddled and annoyed most critics ... THE BUZZ: What a mind-numbing premise ... This micro-budget indie -- written, directed, edited, and scored by Carruth -- walked off with the top prize at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Sharing the same name as -- and similar appearance to -- her former lover, Scott sparks to Louise, who openly welcomes the chance to love again.
THE BUZZ: As with his excellent first film, Rodger Dodger, Kidd has outfitted his unique romantic story idea with a wonderful small ensemble cast. P.S. seems poised to be Kidd's breakthrough; let's hope he sticks to indies instead of defecting to the studio system. Linney's also courting Oscar buzz with both this and the upcoming Kinsey. On his latest assignment, he finds information about his own life that puts him in danger. THE BUZZ: Lions Gate basically owns the thriller genre this year, what with Open Water, the upcoming Saw, and now The Final Cut to shiver about. Thanks in part to powerhouse producer Nick Wechsler, the relatively unknown Naim scored a solid cast and a major talent in cinematographer Tak Fujimoto. When the cultural tide changes, and women are allowed onstage, he attempts to reinvent himself as a male lead while seeing his dresser (Danes) climb to fame in the roles he once performed. THE BUZZ: The nasty story attached to this production concerns Crudup, who abandoned his very pregnant partner Mary-Louise Parker for his co-star Danes (who left her lover, Ben Lee). Look for the ensuing PR blitz and Oscar angling to be an uphill battle, especially with the Parker-friendly New York media. Brutally rebuffed, Peaches finds a way for her and Angela to come together: Team up to win the city's annual hair show, and bring down Marcella (Torres), Angela's nemesis. THE BUZZ: Once the subject of a lawsuit with MGM (who are delivering Beauty Shop next year), Hair Show looks low-budget in a good way; anything that promises a "Hair Battle Royale" and a fight between Mo'Nique and Vivica A. Fox is worth the price of a matinee admission in my book. This is distributor UrbanWorks' first release, just so you know. A '58 Plymouth Fury, driven by a stranger with a link to Parker's youth, stops to pick him up. THE BUZZ: Based on the ebook by Stephen King, Bullet is the first film from the newly formed distributor Freestyle Releasing. THE BUZZ: Based on W. Somserset Maugham's novel Theatre, Szabó reteams with producer Robert Lantos, with whom he worked on Sunshine, the director's biggest stateside success to date. The film's premiere at the Toronto Film Fest came with the requisite Oscar buzz for Bening, but unless she scores big-time with critics' groups, it doesn't seem too likely. The prolonged buzz is absolutely sonorous, especially with its 5 Oscar nominations (though we're kinda bummed for Giamatti and Oh). We think it's got the Best Adapted Screenplay statue on lock. Well, whatever he did, it worked. We're given to understand this film works as well. Brilliantly, we might add. THE BUZZ: With a political issue-oriented agenda it could be argued that, neverminding the "Bollocks to Thatcher!" of High Hopes, Leigh's stepping into new territory with his ninth feature. And, despite being rejected by Cannes Vera Drake connected in Venice, walking away with the Golden Lion (star Staunton received the Volpi Cup for best actress). THE BUZZ: Mixed reviews aside, Green is an experienced director of child actors (we hear Bell, who's shed his Billy Elliot looks, nailed the Southern accent) and, thanks to his cinematographer Tim Orr, his films are visually magnificent. Undertow, with its thriller packaging, looks to be a slight departure from Green's other works, so we'll see if he can retain his current audience as he shoots for wider exposure. Their relationship causes her to question the decisions she has made since her husband's death, creating a rift within her family.
THE BUZZ: While her short haircut alarmed the fashionistas, it's a kissing scene between Kidman and Bright that has shocked preview audiences -- the press and general public alike. We agree that it does sound icky (ditto the short 'do), but we're more concerned with the idea that the minor controversy will still result in a minor hit, just like The Human Stain. And Dogville.
