Director: Peter Kosminsky Stars: Michelle Pfeiffer, Renée Zellweger, Robin Wright Penn (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: After her mother (Pfeiffer) goes to prison for poisoning an ex-lover, a young woman (Alison Lohman) spends her adolescent years in a series of foster homes. Based on the novel by Janet Fitch.
THE BUZZ: Oleander is a sturdy throwback to Golden Age studio dramas. You can almost imagine Bette Davis in the place of Pfeiffer, Lana Turner in the stead of Wright-Penn and Vivien Leigh with Zellweger
you get the idea. Then there's Alison Lohman. When we first see her, on a bed with a bandana, she almost appears to be a frail 68-year old woman. Then she gets up and she's a confused teenage. A few scenes later she's Lolita-dangerous. Her embodiment of several ages and several stages of a young girl's life deserves serious consideration from the Academy. - Keith Simanton Message Boards: How old is Astrid when she has sex with Ray? | Paint it Black Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews

Director: Rick Famuyiwa Stars: Taye Diggs, Sanaa Lathan, Mos Def (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: Friends since childhood, a magazine editor (Lathan) and a hip-hop record exec (Diggs) stumble into romantic territory.
THE BUZZ: It's a foregone conclusion that Lathan and Diggs will wind up together, and there are no huge obstacles ever thrown in their path, so most of Brown Sugar is occupied with watching and waiting while these two very pretty people drop the other pretty people they're currently seeing so they can ultimately be pretty together. The two leads are nicely grounded, especially Lathan, and their charisma could light up Manhattan and part of Brooklyn, but please, give them something to do already! - Mark Englehart Message Boards: SOUNDTRACK (kinda weak) | Kanye West? Director: Jay Russell Stars: Alexis Bledel, Jonathan Jackson, Sissy Spacek (Full Cast) Studio: Buena Vista Pictures The Plot: When 15-year-old Winnie (Bledel) discovers the Tuck family living in the woods near her house, she finds them infinitely more exciting than her own family. But the Tucks have a dangerous secret, and soon Winnie has to decide whether to join them forever or return to her stuffy Victorian existence. Based on the classic story by Natalie Babbitt.
THE BUZZ: Director Russell (My Dog Skip) scores another hit for the young adult crowd with this solid adaptation that wraps a few serious ideas about mortality amidst all the frills and petticoats that Bledel is never seen without. The adult cast is surprisingly good, and TV stars Bledel and Jackson more than hold their own, anchoring the film with their wide-eyed beauty, humor and pathos. The romance between the two is sweetly heartfelt yet chaste enough not to worry parents though not much thought is directed toward their ultimate age difference. - Mark Englehart Message Boards: euughghh why did it end that way??? Director: Michael Moore Stars: Michael Moore, Charlton Heston, Marilyn Manson (Full Cast) Studio: United Artists The Plot: Documentarian Michael Moore take a look at gun violence in America. His travels take him from Columbine High School to the home of NRA President Charlton Heston, with numerous stops in between.
THE BUZZ: As long as it's recognized as what it is, propaganda, Bowling is a more than provocative, interesting movie. Moore brings up some great questions but sadly, he then tries to answer them. His particular brand of chicanery would be tolerable if this "documentary" didn't satirize other media outlets for using the exact same tricks. This is particularly true of Moore's browbeating of an ill Heston, which culminates in a two-shot using, miracle of miracles, one camera (the faked rape interview from Broadcast News springs readily to mind). A Parker/Stone history reenactment is essentially a community college editorial cartoon sprung to life. - Keith Simanton Message Boards: Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews

Director: Brian Koppelman David Levien Stars: Jennifer Baxter, Dennis Hopper, Vin Diesel (Full Cast) Studio: New Line Cinema The Plot: When the son of a major mafioso screws up a big cash delivery, he has to recruit his buddies (also mob kids) to help him out of the jam.
THE BUZZ: While it seems to have a solid concept and hip cast, don't be surprised if this Diesel-powered scooter is pushed out of the Top 10 this weekend. Director: Roger Avary Stars: James Van Der Beek, Ian Somerhalder, Shannyn Sossamon (Full Cast) Studio: Lions Gate Films The Plot: Patrick Bateman's younger brother Sean (Van Der Beek), a college student who dabbles in drug-dealing, is drawn into a romantic triangle with a bisexual guy (Somerhalder) and his ex-girlfriend (Shannyn Sossamon). Based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho).
THE BUZZ: After draining the bodily fluids of his lifeless young cast, director Avary is stuck with one icky mess of a movie. Attraction offers nothing for those weaned on writer Brett Easton Ellis's angst-fueled wankfests, aside from a so-what story and dodgy editing. And you expectant voyeurs will be left limp--this was a good turn for Van der Beek, but definitely not his best side. - Arno Kazarian Message Boards: I find the videotaped rape scene with Lauren very disturbing | any new extra features on the blu-ray release? Director: Guy Ritchie Stars: Madonna, Adriano Giannini, Bruce Greenwood (Full Cast) Studio: Screen Gems The Plot: In this remake of a 1974 Wertmüller hit, a snooty material girl (Madonna) is stranded on a Mediterranean island with a communist sailor (Giannini Jr., in the role his father played in the original).
THE BUZZ: The film is either a very clever homage and satire of the 1970's most bathetic films, or, horrors of horrors, it may not be. A musical montage, seemingly cribbed from about six different Chris Isaak videos suggests the latter. If you're of a mind to, catch it while you can. - Keith Simanton Message Boards: This is the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life | Why.....???? Director: Paul Thomas Anderson Stars: Adam Sandler, Emily Watson, Philip Seymour Hoffman (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: An emotionally paralyzed man (Adam Sandler) with seven abusive sisters begins a romantic journey with a mysterious woman (Emily Watson) after he discovers an abandoned harmonium outside of his place of business. Did we mention he collects pudding coupons to earn frequent flier miles?
THE BUZZ: It may not be the best film of the year, but until it shows up, PTA's new film can keep its seat warm for it. Brash, original and yet strangely familiar Punch-Drunk is an experiment that goes horribly right. It's a Romantic's Taxi Driver. - Keith Simanton Message Boards: Why did PSH's character care so much about getting money from Barry? | If 'Punch-Drunk Love' is In Your Top 15, Post It! Director: David Twohy Stars: Bruce Greenwood, David Crow, Matthew Davis (Full Cast) Studio: Miramax Films The Plot: The crew of a World War II submarine, already having to deal with pesky U-boats, discovers something very sinister deep in the ocean. And it doesn't have anything to do with Nazis.
THE BUZZ: This thriller has been knocked around the Miramax schedule so much it could be called Below The Studio's Radar. Still, Twohy's Pitch Black was a great visceral thriller, so there's good reason to expect some good jolts out of this one. Message Boards: Is the sub actually haunted? | Question (Not about the plot) Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews

Director: Corey Yuen Stars: Jason Statham, Qi Shu, Matt Schulze (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: When a courier (Statham) becomes curious about his cargo, he's suddenly tangled up in an international crime web.
THE BUZZ: Statham's acting in some of the early scenes might have you expecting another post-modern caper flick like another one of his films. There are also strong echoes of promotional series "The Hire", but this is a more old-fashioned popcorn movie. The stunts will have you laughing with them for their outrageousness, though you've seen some of this before; the dialogue, alas, will have you laughing at its corniness. Fortunately, there are more stunts than dialogue. - Jon Reeves Message Boards: most ridiculous moment? | Diversity! Showtimes | Trailers | Photos | Message Boards | User Comments | Reviews

Director: Christian Charles Stars: Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Garry Shandling (Full Cast) Studio: Miramax Home Entertainment The Plot: Find out what happens when Jerry starts getting real in this documentary of his 2000 comedy tour.
THE BUZZ: With a hysterical, highly original trailer and cameos by Garry Shandling, Chris Rock, and Colin Quinn, Comedian's future looks bright. But will this be Truth or Dare real, or can we hope for a "Don't leave home without Shoshanna" joke or two?
