Spielberg Steps Down As Olympic Advisor

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg has quit as artistic advisor to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. The Oscar winner announced his decision on Tuesday, accusing China of not doing enough to help end the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan. Spielberg said, "I find that my conscience will not allow me to continue business as usual. At this point, my time and energy must be spent not on Olympic ceremonies, but on doing all I can to help bring an end to the unspeakable crimes against humanity that continue to be committed in Darfur. Sudan's government bears the bulk of the responsibility for these ongoing crimes but the international community, and particularly China, should be doing more." Earlier on Tuesday, campaigners including actress Mia Farrow had sent a letter to China's president via the United Nations, asking him to sever ties with Sudan - a country that sells China two-thirds of its oil.

Cyrus Criticized For Setting Bad Example to Kids

Singer/actress Miley Cyrus has been slammed by a consumer watchdog in the U.S. for failing to wear a seatbelt in a scene in her new film Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best Of Both Worlds Concert Tour. The scene in question features the 15-year-old pop sensation and her country singer dad Billy Ray Cyrus in the back of a Range Rover - with neither of them wearing their seatbelts. And the pair have been heavily criticized by Consumer Reports for setting a bad example to Miley's young fans as a result of their lack of car safety. In a post on the watchdog's online blog, the group says: "It seems to us that Miley, her father, and Disney had a perfect opportunity to help influence teens and counteract-rather than encourage-this trend. Then again, as Hannah (Miley) herself sings, 'Everybody makes mistakes.'"

Gary Coleman Weds

Former child star Gary Coleman has wed his fiancee on a mountain top, just five months after meeting her on a film set on her 22nd birthday. The pint-sized Diff'rent Strokes star, 40, wed Shannon Price recently and admits the ceremony was a very private affair. He says, "Nobody was around but the minister, preacher, the videographers, the photographer, the helicopter pilot and us." Coleman insists the 18 years between them means nothing - even though Price had no idea who he was when they first met last year. He adds, "I don't have issues with age, I have issues with intelligence and she's more intelligent than I am, and that's what matters to me." But Price tells People magazine that she knows she has a testing time ahead of her as the temperamental actor's young bride: "He lets his anger conquer him sometimes. He throws things around, and sometimes he throws it in my direction. I don't like the violence."

Michelle Williams Returns To Work

Grieving actress Michelle Williams has returned to work on a film set just yards from where her former fiancee Heath Ledger was found dead. The 27-year-old filmed scenes for her new film Mammoth on set in Manhattan, New York on Monday. The former Dawson's Creek star was shooting the scenes for the upcoming picture in Sweden when she heard of her former lover's death last month. But Williams' friends fear the Brokeback Mountain star has returned to work too soon after Ledger's funeral in Australia on Saturday. A source tells the New York Post, "She looked heartbroken, but did a good job keeping her composure. She was also bleary-eyed, but she had a job to do, and she did it." Ledger was found dead in his New York apartment on January 22, aged just 28. Toxicology results released on Wednesday revealed he was killed by an accidental overdose of prescribed medications.

Spears the Dance Teacher?

Britney Spears turned dance teacher for a group of five-year-old children on Monday when she paid a visit to Hollywood's Millennium Dance Complex. The pop star, 26, put her personal troubles behind her and decided to surprise the kids by teaching them dance routines to songs including Madonna's "Material Girl" and "True Blue." Robert Baker, the co-owner of Millennium dance studios, was impressed with the way an upbeat Spears interacted with the children and led the class wearing "her favorite brown cowboy boots, fishnet stockings, a red short skirt, and a bluish greenish top that hangs down past her skirt." He recalls, "She comes in, she winds them up, and then tells them, 'I guess I have to introduce myself to you guys!' She worked out this great little routine for them, they were dancing all over the place, she had them dancing in a circle like a choo-choo train. The kids loved it - they are having a ball right now. And Britney - she's just drinking it up. She's totally enjoying herself. It's an amazing class - she and the kids are certainly enjoying the process." And Spears is reportedly thinking of making it a regular occurrence. Baker adds, "Britney's telling me that she likes this so much that she's thinking about making it a regular thing, possibly every other week. She loves to interact with the kids, and she feels that it's important to give back to the dance community." The singer has been a regular visitor to the Millennium Dance Complex in the last few days following her release from a Los Angeles psychiatric hospital.

Ritter's Death "Could Have Been Prevented"

Late actor John Ritter's life could have been saved by a simple chest X-ray, according to his family's lawyer. The star was filming 8 Simple Rules in September 2003 when he was rushed to hospital suffering from vomiting and chest pains - and died hours after entering the emergency room. Ritter's wife Amy Yasbeck filed a lawsuit against doctors at the Providence Street Joseph Medical Center, California, claiming her husband was misdiagnosed twice. Yasbeck and Ritter's children had already settled for $12.5 million with the Californian hospital where Ritter died - but now she is battling two New York doctors who have submitted subpoenas arguing that the hospital's medics were not negligent. On Monday, Moses Lebovits, an attorney for the family, told a Los Angeles court the doctors failed to order a chest X-ray for Ritter - a move that would have discovered the torn aorta. However, attorneys for radiologist Matthew Lotysch and cardiologist Joseph Lee told jurors that Ritter arrived at the hospital in grave condition and that they did everything they could to keep him alive. He told jurors, "These doctors did nothing more than try to save Mr. Ritter's life. Dr. Lee did not save John Ritter's life, but he didn't kill him either. At that time there was nothing that could have been done to save his life." The case continues.

Aretha Upset With Beyonce's "Queen of Soul" Slip-Up

Aretha Franklin has lashed out at Beyonce Knowles for giving Tina Turner her Queen of Soul tag at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. The singer, who was honored with the Grammy MusiCares Person of The Year award, was stunned when Beyonce introduced her duet partner as the Queen of Soul. Franklin is known throughout the world at the Queen, and she felt more than a little snubbed. And, in a brief statement, Franklin snaps, "I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce, however I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy."

Hilton's Brother Accused of Running Over Gas Station Employee

Paris Hilton's brother Barron Hilton accidentally ran over a gas station worker before he was stopped by police for driving under the influence, according to reports. The 18-year-old was arrested on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California at 8:30am on Tuesday. Fernando Pellez claims he called the cops on Hilton after he was knocked over by a black Mercedes at a 76 gas station, and that the teenager then stumbled out of the car, appearing to be under the influence of alcohol. Pellez tells PageSix.com, "I was knocked to the ground. The Mercedes lost control as it was turning into the gas station and Barron got out of the car and he was totally drunk and couldn't walk straight." Hilton was taken to the Lost Hills Sheriff's station, where he was booked. The police station is the same one where Mel Gibson was booked following his DUI arrest in 2006.

Newman To Make Stage Directorial Debut

Veteran actor Paul Newman is to make his debut as a theatre director at the age of 83. The Cool Hand Luke star will direct a stage version of John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice And Men at the Westport Country Playhouse in Westport, Connecticut in October. Newman, who has experience directing movies and TV shows, has never taken charge of a stage production before. The actor's wife Joanne Woodward is artistic director at the Westport Country Playhouse, and Newman starred in a phenomenally successful play of Our Town at the venue in 2002.

Thurman: "I'm Not Pregnant, But I Want Kids"

Actress Uma Thurman is keen to have kids with partner Arpad Busson. Busson was recently forced to deny claims the star is already pregnant, after she was spotted sporting a fuller figure than usual - instead putting the weight gain down to the Kill Bill star quitting smoking. But Thurman insists she hasn't given up hoping on adding to her two kids with ex-husband Ethan Hawke - Maya, nine, and six-year-old Levon - and at 37, she's not too old either. She tells Redbook magazine, "I'd like more children. I asked the doctor, she tells me there's still time."
