Bill Murray Arrested for Drunk Driving in a Golf Cart

Hollywood star Bill Murray has been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in a golf cart in the Swedish capital Stockholm. The actor was stopped by police in the early hours of Sunday and alcohol was smelled on his breath, according Stockholm police detective inspector Christer Holmlund. Holmlund says, "He refused to blow in the (breath test) instrument, citing American legislation. So we applied the old method - a blood test. It will take 14 days before the results are in." Murray - who is in the city attending a golf tournament - signed a document admitting driving under the influence and permitted a police officer to enter a guilty plea on his behalf if the case goes to court. The 56-year-old will only be charged if his blood alcohol level is higher than the legal limit. If it is excessively high he could face a prison sentence - but a fine is more likely. Holmlund adds, "There were no obvious signs, like when someone is really tipsy." The officer claims mystery surrounds the golf cart and who owns it - although Murray isn't facing theft charges: "It was a golf cart. How it ended up in this predicament I don't know. I have done this since 1968 and I've never experienced anything like this."

Midler Faces Fine After Destroying Trees

Hollywood actress Bette Midler will be hit with a fine after illegally cutting down more than 230 trees close to her home on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. The showbiz icon may have to pay up to $6,500 in fines on the orders of the state's Board of Land and Natural Resources for having the trees felled. She also stands accused of building a graded road without permits required for the land zoned for conservation use. Midler's attorney Max W. J. Graham says the star didn't realize permits were needed to remove the trees on the vacant land, but confirmed she will pay the fines and follow a replanting program. He says, "The whole idea with cutting the trees down was with the idea of improving the lot with native species. It's unfortunate that a mistake was made."

Lohan To Escape Jail Time?

Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan is set to escape possible jail time in connection with her two DUI arrests, according to media reports. Lohan, 21, was arrested in Santa Monica, California in July after the mother of her former assistant told police the frantic actress was chasing her through the streets. A breath test was conducted at the scene and Lohan's blood alcohol level was said to be over the legal driving limit. Police also allegedly found cocaine on the star. The incident followed another drink-driving arrest earlier this year. However, law enforcement sources tell TMZ.com there is a "strong possibility" Lohan will not face felony charges - downsizing the charges to Dui misdemeanours. Her arraignment has been set for Friday.

Pitt Hopes New Homes Will Help Regroup New Orleans Families

Superstar Brad Pitt felt compelled to help the regeneration of New Orleans because of the "unacceptable" way in which many of the Louisiana city's residents were left scattered with nobody to turn to following 2005's Hurricane Katrina. The Babel actor, who has a home in the city, is chairing the design jury on the construction of five energy-efficient homes for Global Green USA - and he promises to build more properties in the near future. Pitt says, "It's a justice issue. What we saw with Katrina is there's a portion of our society that's been overlooked. In the aftermath, we're not going to be able to bring back the friends and family that are lost, we're not going to bring back their heirlooms and their photographs. But maybe we can provide a better way of life, maybe we can find some good out of this. And that has to do with justice and fairness." He adds, "I met a 60-year-old man when I first arrived here to look into this. And he said, 'I did everything right. I got a job, I bought a home, I raised my kids in that home, they did the same. Now my kids - one kid's in Orlando, one's in Houston, we've been wiped out. What do I do?' He's right and that's unacceptable. So any debate on should we rebuild, should we not, I'll take you right on."

Spears Cancels Timberlake Duet?

Troubled pop star Britney Spears has pulled out of recording a duet with former lover Justin Timberlake, according to reports. The hitmaker was scheduled to reunite with her old flame to produce a comeback track produced by Timbaland, but ditched the idea at the last minute. A source tells New York gossip column, PageSix, "Timbaland set aside a week out of his crazy schedule to do this - and then, just before she was supposed to fly out, Britney abruptly canceled the session and refused to do the song. It's crazy. She's looking for a comeback, and this would have not only been a huge hit, but something she could have opened the MTV Video Awards with and really blown everyone away." The cancellation has now stalled Spears' comeback ambitions and has sparked rumors she might be dropped from her label Jive. Another source tells PageSix, "Listen, everyone is worried. In her mind, her album is done and she's done enough work. People at Jive have been with Britney since album one, and have an investment in her. They have faith that once the material is there, she will become focused and step it up. She's very competitive, but at the end of the day, it's hard. She has to do the work - no one can do it for her." Representatives for Spears, Timberlake and Jive declined to comment.

'Dirty Dancing' Makers Mount Copyright Infringement Suit

The makers of iconic movie Dirty Dancing have mounted a lawsuit against companies selling merchandise featuring a popular phrase from the 1987 film. Lionsgate Films filed the suit in Los Angeles District Court last Wednesday against 15 companies which they accuse of illegally using the words "Nobody puts Baby in the corner" on a range of goods. The lawsuit states, "The American Film Institute voted 'Nobody puts Baby in a corner' as one of the top 100 most popular quotes from a motion picture. Plaintiff markets and sells merchandise with the movie trademarks through approved licensees as part of the 'Dirty Dancing' line of approved merchandise." The suit accuses the companies named of "creating confusion" by distributing unofficial Dirty Dancing merchandise, and aims to stop the vendors - including Uncommongoods.com in New York - selling objects featuring the phrase. Lionsgate Films is also seeking a court order to make the 15 companies pay restitution costs and damages.

Lopez Accused of Stealing Flowers

TV star Mario Lopez has been accused of stealing flowers from a garden show in California. The former Saved By The Bell star allegedly swiped the organic flower arrangements during a break from the Southern California Home and Garden Show. Show presenter Danny Seo tells the New York Daily News, "Mario Lopez was also booked, and he took the flowers with him when he left! He outright asked a stagehand, 'Can I take these for my girlfriend?' and the poor kid was like, 'Sure, I guess.' He basically took my props as a gift for someone else!"

Madonna Sells Maverick Records

Pop superstar Madonna has sold her Maverick Records label, 12 years after she founded it. The Material Girl owned 60 percent of Maverick with her partners Guy Oseary and Ronnie Dashev, while Warner Music Group owned the remaining 40 percent. Madonna has now agreed to let Warner Music executives buy her out of her contract - just months after Maverick took legal action against the firm and its former parent company, Time Warner, alleging breach of contract and mismanagement. Warner Music responded by filing its own lawsuit against Maverick. However, according to Maverick lawyer Bert Fields, the 49-year-old will continue to record for Warner Music. He says, "It was an effective way of settling the lawsuit. It's clean and equitable, and it doesn't have anything to do with her record contract." Maverick artists include Alanis Morrisette, Erasure and The Prodigy.

Ventriloquist Terry Fator has won U.S. reality TV show America's Got Talent and a prize of $1 million. The 42-year-old from Mesquite, Texas was voted best act on the program's final, which aired on network NBC on Tuesday night, beating out competition from runner-up, singer Cas Haley, from Arlington, Texas. Fator wowed judges Sharon Osbourne, David Hasselhoff and Piers Morgan and American TV viewers by performing with his dummy, who sang with Kermit The Frog. He said, "Thank you, America!"
