Anna Nicole Smith Dead at 39

Reality TV star, actress and former model Anna Nicole Smith has died after collapsing in Hollywood, Florida. The 39-year-old was found unconscious in her hotel room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino yesterday afternoon. According to hotel officials, Smith was "unresponsive" and emergency crews performed Cpr at the scene and a breathing apparatus was inserted in her throat. Paramedics were seen pumping her chest as she was taken from the hotel and transported to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood. She died at 2:49 pm ET. Local streets were closed off to rush Smith to the hospital, three miles away. Her five-month-old daughter, Dannielynn, was not with her mother, sources say. The baby is being cared for by a family friend in The Bahamas, where Smith has been living since last summer. Anna Nicole was fighting eviction and paternity lawsuits at the time of her death. Ex-boyfriends Larry Birkhead and G. Ben Thompson had both filed lawsuits against the actress/model. Photojournalist Birkhead filed a paternity suit last year claiming he was the biological father of Smith's baby daughter Dannielynn, while developer Thompson has been fighting to evict her from the home he helped secure for her in the Bahamas last summer. On Wednesday, a California judge demanded Smith submit her baby daughter for a DNA test by February 21 - in an effort to end the battle over who the biological father of the baby is. At the time of her death, Smith was also fighting the estate of her late husband, oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II, for a share of his estate. Marshall died in 1995. In 2002, she was awarded $88 million from the estate of her late husband, but was denied claim that she was also owed interest on that money. Smith's life has been rocked with the bizarre and the tragic with moments of happiness and success. Born Vicky Lynn Hogan in Houston, Texas, she started her career as a waitress in a fried chicken restaurant but tasted success as a Playboy model, actress and star of her own self-titled, bizarre reality TV show. Smith was named Playboy Playmate of the Month in May 1992 and Playboy Playmate of the Year in 1993. She shocked the world when she married J. Howard Marshall II in 1994 when she was 26 and the oil tycoon was almost 90. Last September was a joyful and terrible month for the actress - she gave birth to baby daughter Dannielynn just three days before her 20-year-old son Daniel died from a lethal overdose of methadone and anti-depressants in his mother's hospital room in the Bahamas. Best known as a socialite, public figure and diet product spokesmodel, Smith also appeared in a handful of movies, including The Hudsucker Proxy, The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult and her final movie Illegal Aliens, which was released last year.

Smith's Mother Blames Drugs for Daughter's Death

Anna Nicole Smith's estranged mother believes drugs were to blame for her daughter's tragic death on Thursday afternoon in Hollywood, Florida. The 39-year-old was found unconscious in her hotel room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and she was later declared dead after being rushed to nearby Memorial Regional Hospital. A medical examiner began an autopsy on her body Friday in a bid to discover the cause of her sudden demise but the former Playboy playmate's mother is convinced drugs played a significant part. Vergie Arthur draws parallels with her grandson Daniel's death last year - which one medical practitioner linked to a combination of methadone and two anti-depressants. She says, "I think she had too many drugs, just like Danny. I tried to warn her about drugs and the people she hung around with. She didn't listen. She was too drugged up." Detectives are reviewing the hotel surveillance footage from the hours leading up to Smith's death and interviewing those connected to the tragic events. However, Deputy Police Chief Michael Browne maintains, "Nothing about this death seems suspicious. We're not treating it that way."

Hefner Pays Tribute to Anna Nicole

Playboy magazine boss Hugh Hefner has paid tribute to his former Playmate, Anna Nicole Smith, after hearing the actress/model had passed away in Florida. Smith was found unconscious in her hotel room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino by her nurse yesterday. She died shortly after arriving at the Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. She was 39. In a statement released yesterday, Hefner wrote, "I am very saddened to learn about Anna Nicole's passing. She was a dear friend who meant a great deal to the Playboy family and me personally. My thoughts and prayers are with her friends and loved ones during this difficult time." Smith was named Playboy Playmate of the Month in May 1992 and Playboy Playmate of the Year in 1993.

Depp Lines Up Nair To Direct New Film

Johnny Depp has head-hunted Vanity Fair filmmaker Mira Nair to direct his new film. Shantaram will star Depp in the lead role, and will be co-produced by Depp's Infinitum Nihil and Brad Pitt's production company Plan B, who bought the rights to the Gregory David Roberts-penned book for $2 million. Indian-born Nair, who directed Monsoon Wedding in 2001, admits she is a big fan of the book and is looking forward to the challenge of working behind the camera with Depp. She says, "I just got the offer a few days back but I will start with it soon. It is a book that completely gripped me as it did millions of others. Johnny Depp is such an extraordinary human being and an extraordinary actor. He embodies so much what Shantaram is and so when he asked me to direct him it was obviously a great honor and challenge for me." Shantaram will be based on the life story of Gregory David Roberts, who escaped from an Australian prison and fled to Mumbai, India, where he became involved with the city's powerful mafia dons.

Heigl Hopeful 'Grey's Anatomy' Cast Can Return To Normal

Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl is confident the cast of the hit series can move forward after the controversy surrounding co-star Isaiah Washington. Washington made headlines after using an anti-gay slur towards co-star TR Knight and subsequently checked into rehab for treatment. Heigl claims the cast usually gets along well and that the set felt "like work as usual" now that Washington has returned. The star, who has been a staunch supporter of her friend and cast mate Knight, believes the appropriate measures were taken under the circumstances. She adds, "If it were ignored or just brushed under the rug, I would be angrier about it. But he's trying very hard. We're all trying very hard. I, obviously, have been very verbal about all of this, but there isn't a lot going on right now. We're all hopeful."

O'Neal Raged After Finding His Son Tied Up

Ryan O'Neal lashed out at his son Griffin O'Neal on Saturday night after discovering the 42 year old had chained his brother Redmond to a staircase - like a dog. According to Los Angeles law enforcement officials, the discovery triggered the volatile family fight, which ended with Ryan's arrest after he allegedly fired a gun shot. Ryan returned from a dinner celebrating Farrah Fawcett's birthday and found Redmond tethered to a staircase with handcuffs on his ankles. According to website Tmz.com, Griffin had taken the extreme steps after finding his brother unconscious from an apparent drug overdose. After calling paramedics to the home, Redmond became responsive and claimed he had just been sleeping. Griffin believed his brother had overdosed and chained him to the staircase to prevent him from leaving and buying more drugs. When Ryan returned home, he apparently became enraged when he tripped over the chain tied to Redmond. Police officials tell Tmz.com they believe it was Ryan, not Griffin, who initially began swinging a fireplace poker that struck Griffin's pregnant girlfriend Joanna Berry, who called the authorities to the O'Neal home and was later treated in hospital for a cut above her eye. Reports suggest the altercation escalated and Ryan fired a warning shot into the staircase to scare Griffin. When deputies arrived on the scene, they found Redmond still tethered and shot video as evidence to document the situation. They also shot video of Ryan's injuries. Ryan was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm after the fight and his case has been forwarded to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office. The District Attorney will decide whether or not to file charges against the star.

Simpson Goes Red With New Marilyn Look

Blonde bombshell Jessica Simpson has gone red after playing around with hairstyles. The singer enlisted the help of good friend and hair stylist Ken Paves to create a new red-head look for her after deciding on a major makeover. The stylist to the stars explains, "We were just having fun and playing with her hairdo... and Jessica just loved it. (Jessica) calls it an 'auburn ginger.' It was just what she wanted. She wore that color as extensions and just loved it so much that she decided she wanted to have her (real) hair colored." Paves said the look was inspired by old Hollywood glamour adding, "It's a throw back to Norma Jean (Marilyn Monroe). It has a very Marilyn Monroe feel. Jessica likes it because it's not as produced and it's a little natural and organic. She has gorgeous hair. She even looks gorgeous without hair! This look is natural and looks great on her."

Timberlake and Samberg Reunite in New York City

Justin Timberlake reunited with comedian Andy Samberg at Madison Square Garden Wednesday night to sing their controversial satirical song "Dick In A Box." The pair hit the headlines in December when they performed the rude comedy tune on American satirical show Saturday Night Live. The spoof video they shot to accompany to saucy song became an instant hit on the Internet. And during Timberlake's New York concert last night, an announcer appeared onstage to introduce "a new band" that had "the most watched video on YouTube." Fans went wild as Samberg and Timberlake took to the stage dressed in campy 1980s costumes, and performed the risque tune. After their performance, Timberlake returned to the stage in a casual T-shirt, holding a mug of tea and told the crowd, "I'm sorry if I offended some of you, but I could not resist." He added jokingly, "Watch out for the new album, late 2007!"

Kimmel Speaks Out About Andy Dick Controversy

Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel has spoken out about his decision to carry unruly guest Andy Dick off his show on Friday night, confessing the wacky funnyman always makes him "uncomfortable." Kimmel called security and helped them physically remove Dick from his chat show sofa after the comic started making unwanted advances toward fellow guest Ivanka Trump. The host says, "Andy did a segment, he was a little out of it. (When) she (Ivanka) came out, he wanted a big, wet kiss. It was time for Andy to go, so I escorted him out by his feet." But Kimmel has spoken to Dick since the Jimmy Kimmel Live incident, and he insists the comic is far from upset about his rude exit. Kimmel adds, "He's Andy. He's not upset. He's not apologetic. He's just nutty. He always makes me a little uncomfortable, you have no idea what he's going to do next."
