Moss Slams Marriage Reports

Supermodel Kate Moss has slammed reports she married boyfriend Pete Doherty on New Year's Day, branding their Thailand trip "just a holiday." Moss and troubled Babyshambles rocker Doherty were reported to have wed in a Phuket beach villa, but a spokesperson for Moss, Stuart Higgins, insists the stars were enjoying time off. He says, "Contrary to various entirely false media reports, there has not been any kind of marriage ceremony in Thailand. She is on holiday." The couple are reportedly planning a wedding ceremony in England, thought to be set for January 18 this year. Doherty and Moss became formally engaged in Florence, Italy in October after a rocky 21 month relationship.

Winfrey Opens South African School for Girls

US talk show queen Oprah Winfrey yesterday opened a school for disadvantaged girls in South Africa, fulfilling a promise she made to former South African President Nelson Mandela six years ago. The $40 million Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, situated in the small town of Henley-on-Klip, south of Johannesburg, aims to give 152 girls from deprived backgrounds a high quality education. The opening was attended by singers Tina Turner, Mary J. Blige and Mariah Carey, actors Sidney Poitier and Chris Tucker, and director Spike Lee. Mandela said in a statement, "This is a lady that has, despite her own disadvantaged background, become one of the benefactors of the disadvantaged throughout the world." At a press conference to mark the opening, Winfrey said she hoped the school would "change the face of a nation. Girls who are educated are less likely to get AIDS and in this country which has such a pandemic, we have to begin to change the pandemic. I wanted to give this opportunity to girls who had a light so bright that not even poverty could dim that light."

Moore: "Kutcher Romance Was a Surprise"

Actress Demi Moore has confessed she was as surprised as family, friends and fans when she found herself falling in love with her husband Ashton Kutcher after meeting him at a dinner party. Moore spoke briefly with her soon-to-be lover, who was actively trying to court another lady at the party, and both stars initially had no thoughts of romance. But Moore tells the February issue of style magazine Vanity Fair she soon found herself falling for the actor in 2003. She accepts, "If somebody would have said, 'OK, here is the prediction: You're going to meet a man (who is) 25 years old and he's going to see being with you and having your three kids as a bonus, ' I would have said, 'Keep dreaming.'" The 44-year-old actress adds, "I think it (romance) caught us both by surprise, and particularly him. He was in this real rise of his career just as we met, which, for a young man, is prime opportunity for heavy-duty play." Moore and Kutcher were married in September 2005 and the actress admits she isn't ruling out starting a family with her younger husband: "Once you hit three, when you're outnumbered, it's really, like, what's the difference between (three or) four or five?"

Stars Ring In 2007 in Style

Christina Aguilera, My Chemical Romance, country trio Rascal Flatts, Toni Braxton and rap group Three 6 Mafia were among the celebrities who performed to over a million revelers on a chilly New York night in Times Square to mark the New Year. The Times Square party set new litter records with city workers picking up more than 3.5 tons of confetti from the streets around New York's party central. But New York wasn't the only place for celebrity parties staged to welcome in 2007 - Las Vegas also staged a series of starry bashes. Former couple Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson hosted rival club parties, but Britney Spears was the main attraction at Caesar's Palace nightclub Pure. More than 3,000 people bought a $250 ticket for the New Year's Eve party, including one rich fan, who paid $50,000 for a table next to the pop star.

Miller: "'Factory Girl' Doesn't Defame Dylan"

Actress Sienna Miller has hit out at claims her new film Factory Girl portrays Bob Dylan as being responsible for the death of her character Edie Sedgwick. The movie explores the life of fashion icon Sedgwick, who was artist Andy Warhol's muse, until her death from suicide at the age of 28. Dylan has reportedly attempted to stop Factory Girl from being released, believing it defamed him. His unhappiness is thought to centre around the character of Billy Quinn, who physically resembles Dylan and has a troubled relationship with Sedgwick. But Miller is "mortified", insisting Dylan is in no way blamed by the film. She says, "It blames Warhol more than anyone. It very obviously looks and sounds like Dylan. But I think a lot of actors base performances on real life. I'm Bob Dylan's biggest fan. I'm mortified that he's p**sed off. (Sedgwick) needed help and no one helped her. It's not that Dylan drove her to heroin addiction."

Judge Dismisses Connery Lawsuit

A New York city judge has dismissed a $30 million lawsuit filed against actor Sean Connery alleging he was a rude and noisy neighbor. State Supreme Court Justice Debra James threw the case out of court Friday, on a technicality after the plaintiff failed to rewrite the petition in the case. Dr Burton Sultan complained that Connery blasted loud music in his Upper East Side apartment and carried out a poor renovation job that attracted rats. The lawsuit called the 76-year-old star a "rude, foul-mouthed, fat old man," which led the judge to order that the petition be rewritten in a more professional manner. Connery and his wife, Micheline, denied the allegations and contended that Sultan was a "tyrant" who had tried to block them from making much needed repairs and who was trying to evict them from their apartment. Sultan's lawyer said his client intended to appeal the judge's decision.

Banda Calls for Madonna To Get In Touch

The father of the Malawian baby Madonna is the process of adopting has asked the pop star for an update on his son. Yohane Banda has told local Malawi newspaper the Daily Times that keeping in touch with Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie since baby David was taken last year has so far proven difficult. The impoverished farmer, who gave his son up for adoption, says, "I don't have her phone and mailing addresses. All I want is to find out how my son is but I don't know how I can do it." Banda made the comments after the newspaper presented him with a $788 check from Scottish nun, Christine Webster, who told the paper she believes the infant would have been better off if Madonna had left him in Malawi. Madonna and Ritchie are bringing up baby David in England, but the pop star insists she's planning regular trips back to Malawi, where she has set up a charity foundation, so that her adopted son-to-be will know his homeland. But the one-year-old boy's father can't wait to hear about his son's new life: "I want to talk to her (Madonna) now and find out about my child." But Yohane Banda has dismissed all suggestions that he feels he made a mistake in letting Madonna take his son away from Malawi. He adds, "All I want is to find out how my child is doing and not to have him back."

Britney Spears has rubbished reports she got so drunk while seeing in the New Year she had to be carried out of a Las Vegas nightclub. The singer was partying at the Pure venue in Caesar's Palace, and was said to have drunk so much champagne, security guards helped her off the premises. However, her manager Larry Rudolph claims the singer walked out of the club because she "was just done." He says, "She was not drunk. She was just tired and falling asleep." Spears, 25, filed for divorce from her husband Kevin Federline in November, shortly after the birth of their second child. She has since been photographed incessantly partying with pals including Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.
