Church Bulks Up for 'Spider-Man 3'

Thomas Haden Church was shocked when producers of Spider-man # insisted he work out intensely for over a year to prepare for a part in the film. The 45-year-old plays the villain Sandman and found it a shocking change after having to gain weight for his role in Sideways. He explains, "When I met with the (Spider-Man 3) producers and director last year they said, 'We probably need you to get in a specific physical shape for the movie. Do you mind taking off your shirt?' I took off my shirt and the director Sam Raimi said, 'We're going to need you to gain about 100 pounds of muscle. You've come here today with the physique of a fishwife and that doesn't fit into our scheme...' I gained a bunch of weight for Sideways, because the director wanted me to appear bloated. I thought, 'I'll make a special cocktail of beer and ice cream in the blender and it will suit this purpose quite nicely!'" Church began his intensive training for the role and is now in top-form. He adds jokingly, "I had to start working out last year, it's been about 16 months of five days a week lifting weights and all right...steroids!"

McShane Fuming Over 'Deadwood' Cancellation

British actor Ian McShane is furious over the way US cable network HBO cancelled his acclaimed western series Deadwood. The network pulled the plug on Deadwood last month, just weeks before the show's third season began. And McShane, who won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Al Swearengen in the drama, is unhappy with the decision. He tells the New York Daily News, "I thought the whole thing was handled shabbily. But what the f**k, HBO and Deadwood have been very good to me. However, I think what's been lost in everybody slapping each other on the back, with a possible two two-hour movies to wrap up the series after this season, is that Deadwood is one of the most acclaimed series on TV. A truly great show. So I was initially shocked. And now I'm sad. You'll never know what the f**k really happened. And we'll see if the two-hour movies come to fruition or not. Part of me prefers it to six one-hour shows, because in a two-hour movie you can play with space and time and cover more material. Look, I loved playing this part. I love the way HBO handled everything up to this point. I think we needed four or five seasons to finish telling the story. I just thought it was odd to cancel the series before season three was even on the air. Whether this was some devious publicity ploy to get more people to watch or not, who knows. But the f**king story of Deadwood wasn't finished, man. So I'm sad about it being cancelled like this."

Blair Confirms Marriage End

The Sweetest Thing star Selma Blair and her husband Ahmet Zappa have confirmed reports they are divorcing amicably after over two years of marriage. The Legally Blonde actress, 33, filed for divorce from the 32-year-old musician in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, citing "irreconcilable differences." Troy Nankin, spokesperson for the couple, tells America's People magazine, "Selma and Ahmet have decided to divorce but love each other very much and will continue to be close friends." The couple married in January 2004 after a whirlwind six month courtship.

Redgrave Dismisses "Desperate'"Criticism

Crusading actress Vanessa Redgrave has dismissed a British newspaper advert requesting her to stop campaigning against a Canadian mining firm which plans to create the biggest open-cast gold mine in Europe. Seventy-seven residents of Rosia Montana took out a full page ad in The Guardian Friday, telling Redgrave they are in favor of the Gabriel Resources plan because it will improve their poor standard of living. But the 69-year-old is adamant the petitioners were paid by Gabriel Resources to speak out against her, and the company is desperate to appease its shareholders in the face of staunch protests. She says, "I can quite understand why some of the villagers have accepted money. But it won't save Rosia Montana. It won't save this area that will be poisoned for decades and decades. I'm amazed that they should be so desperate as to put in an advert criticizing me, but it's for their shareholders back in Canada."

Gellar and Prinze Jr. Deny Divorce Rumors

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. have slammed rumors Prinze's new TV show Freddie is tearing them apart. The couple have been plagued by reports they are on the verge of splitting since the She's All That star signed up to his new sitcom last year. A source tells the New York Daily News that, "Ever since he started that show Freddie things were over." They have reportedly been living apart in recent weeks. However, the couple's representative Leslie Sloane Zelnick has furiously denied the allegations, insisting the couple are still, "completely together." She adds they'll be spending the weekend together at Zelnick's house in Connecticut. Gellar and Prinze Jr. married in 2002.

Lowe Given Go-Ahead for Dream Home

The West Wing actor Rob Lowe has been given permission to build his ocean-view "dream home" in Santa Barbara, California. The 42-year-old was given the go-ahead by local authorities and, when the property has been built, he will count John Cleese and Oprah Winfrey among his neighbors in the Montecito community. The venture had received strong opposition from local resident Fred Gluck, who protested Lowe's plans for a 24-foot-high hedge would partially block his view of the Pacific Ocean. But Lowe is adamant the right decision has been made by the Planning Commission, insisting, "I've always been a big believer in the process. I'm obviously pleased with the outcome."
