Berry Hits Out at DJ's "Racist" Joke

Halle Berry accused BBC Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles of "racism" live on air on Thursday (18MAY06), after he impersonated a "big, fat black guy" on the show. Berry, who was in the studio with Hugh Jackman to promote X-Men: The Last Stand, was quick to pick up on the notorious shock jock's joke. Jackman quipped that the rotund Moyles would be a perfect body double for him, should he ever land the part of James Bond. Moyles said, "Your Bond double? I could definitely do that. Put your hands up in the air! I'm a black American guy. A big, fat black guy. Put you hands up in the air. I don't wanna be shooting yo a**!" Berry remarked, "Are we having a racist moment here?" To which Moyles hastily replied, "No, no! Not at all!" He later returned to the subject after Berry left the studio, sniping, "'Are we having a racist moment here?' Oh just get over yourself. What the hell was all that about?" A Radio 1 spokesman says, "There wasn't anything racist in what Chris said."

Spears Involved in Another Baby Bungle

Pop star Britney Spears is embroiled in more parental controversy, after nearly dropping her baby as she was leaving a New York City hotel on Thursday. The latest mishap occurred as the singer emerged from the Ritz Carlton hotel, holding a drink in one hand and her baby in the other. Spears tried to maneuver through a crowd of onlookers when she tripped suddenly, causing her son's head to snap backwards and sending his hat flying off. The singer regained her balance and the baby didn't seem to suffer any serious injuries, according to website Tmz.com. Immediately after the incident an agitated Spears said, "This is why I need a gun," seemingly referring to having to battle her way through the crowd. The incident is the latest in a series of mishaps for Spears. She caused concern earlier this week when she was snapped driving her Mini Cooper convertible with her son in his car seat facing the wrong way.

'The OC' Fans Furious at Barton

SPOILER ALERT: Fans of teen drama The OC are furious with star Mischa Barton for revealing her character, Marissa Cooper, dies in the show's season finale - before it even airs. The actress sat down for an interview with entertainment news show Access Hollywood, which aired hours before the show's final episode last night. Media reports suggested the star's character could be leaving, but the show's producers have tried to keep the ending top secret, filming multiple conclusions with different cast members being killed. Access Hollywood sent out an email promoting last night's interview with the star, setting off a string of media reports revealing the secret ending. The email alert featured the subject line "On the next Access Hollywood: Mischa Barton Confirms Her Character On The OC Dies and Reveals What the Show Has in Store For Fans." The 20-year-old actress had expressed a desire to leave the show to focus on her film career.

Poitier Receives Honor at Cannes

Veteran actor Sidney Poitier was named a commander in France's order of arts and letters at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday. The Oscar winner received the highly coveted award from the French culture minister Renaud Donnedieu De Vabres, who praised him for tearing down barriers for black actors in Hollywood. He told Poitier, "You are the champion of equality between men." The 79-year-old actor thanked his parents, who were field workers in the Bahamas, for giving him a sense of honesty, integrity and compassion. He also credited the filmmakers who gave him acting opportunities, hailing them as "men who chose to change that pattern because it was not democratic, it was not American, it was not human." Poitier broke ground when he became the first actor of African descent to win an Academy Award for Lilies Of The Field in 1963.

McKellen Courts Controversy

English actor Ian McKellen is bemused by the controversy over The Da Vinci Code novel and movie, insisting Christians should be happy with the theory that Jesus Christ married and produced a bloodline. The gay star, who plays Sir Leigh Teabing in the Ron Howard movie, supports the fictional plot that Jesus married Mary Magdalene, because it would prove the prophet wasn't a homosexual. Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival in France on Wednesday, McKellen said, "When I read the book I believed it entirely. I thought that Leigh Teabing argued his case very convincingly indeed, and clever Dan Brown for twisting my mind in the right direction. And when I put the book down, I thought what a load of... and that's still going on in my mind. I'm very happy to believe that Jesus was married. And I know the Catholic church has problems with gay people and so this would be absolute proof that Jesus was not gay."

'Narnia' Sequel Postponed

The release date of the sequel to The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe has been severely delayed while its special effects are completed. The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian was originally scheduled for release in December 2007, but is now expected to come out in the summer of 2008, according to a spokesman for Disney. Director Andrew Adamson needs more time to polish the fantasy film's special effects. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, starring Tilda Swinton, and featuring the voices of Ray Winstone and Liam Neeson, became Disney's most successful live-action film of all time, taking an estimated $742 million worldwide.

Scorsese Hailed for Documentary Work

Goodfellas movie-maker Martin Scorsese is to be honored for his work in non-fiction with a top award at the Silverdocs documentary film festival next month. The maverick director, whose documentary work includes the recent No Direction Home: Bob Dylan and rock concert classic The Last Waltz, has been hailed an inspiration and praised for his work uncovering US culture. Festival director Patricia Finneran says, "It's about telling America's story, but it's also about telling a story with artistry. I think his stories about great musical artists really help us understand our American musical culture and national consensus." Scorsese will be on hand at the festival to discuss his documentaries, and will also see The Last Waltz shown on a giant outdoor screen. Silverdocs is sponsored by the American Film Institute and the Discovery Channel and will take place between June 13 and 18 in Silver Spring, Maryland, boasting 25 premieres in 100 film screenings.

Wallace Admits Suicide Attempt

Veteran newsman Mike Wallace has admitted he attempted to take his own life two decades ago. The 88-year-old journalist, who is retiring from US news program 60 Minutes, made the admission while being interviewed for a career retrospective airing on Sunday. Wallace has openly talked about his problems with depression in the past, but has never admitted attempting suicide. When his 60 Minutes colleague Morley Safer questioned him about it during the interview he confessed he tried it once. He said, "I don't know why the hell you asked me that question, because other people have. It's the first time I have answered it honestly." Wallace then went on to relate the circumstances behind the attempt, but claims the last 20 years since "have been the best in my life."

McGregor and Farrell Sign On for Allen Film

Miami Vice star Colin Farrell and Moulin Rouge heartthrob Ewan McGregor are set to star in director Woody Allen's new film set in London. The as-yet-untitled film is the third movie the New Yorker has shot in London, following the critically acclaimed Match Point and the upcoming Scoop. Plans for the new film were quickly put into place after Allen's Paris project, which was set to star Michelle Williams and David Krumholtz, fell through. According to Moviehole.net, the film will begin shooting this summer.

Crow Couples Up With Stamos

Rocker Sheryl Crow has reportedly found love with Jake in Progress star John Stamos. The singer, who has recovered from breast cancer surgery, broke off her engagement to biker Lance Armstrong earlier this year. A source tells US publication Life & Style a mutual friend set up the celebrity pair. The couple had their first date a few weeks ago in Malibu, California, where they walked around the Malibu Country Mart shopping centre and stopped for a coffee. The source says, "They've been talking a lot and plan to have dinner together soon. They're really into each other, so it could blossom into something more."

Morton To Tie the Knot

British actress Samantha Morton is engaged to be married, after boyfriend Harry Holm surprised her with a ring on her 29th birthday. The Minority Report star was celebrating in Paris on Saturday when Holm popped the question, and the pair are expected to tie the knot in September. She says, "We're over the moon. We're very much in love and looking forward to spending the rest of our lives together." Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell has been named as best man.
