Kidman Announces Engagement

Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman is engaged to country music star Keith Urban. Kidman hosted the 30th Anniversary gala for United Nations organization UNIFEM in New York City on Saturday, where she was accompanied by Urban. The Hours star confirmed the engagement to US publication People, admitting Urban was not just her boyfriend saying, "He's actually my fiance. I wouldn't be bringing my boyfriend (to the event)." The confirmation of the engagement ends months of speculation about the Australian couple, who were first spotted together last July. In November, Kidman was photographed wearing a ring on her wedding finger while walking arm-in-arm with Urban in Boston, Massachusetts. The actress, who has been in New York's Hamptons region shooting an untitled film for director Noah Baumbach, is a goodwill ambassador for UNIFEM, the United Nations Development Fund for Women. Kidman was previously married to Tom Cruise and the couple have two adopted children together, Isabella, 13 and Connor, 11.

'Survivor' Winner Sentenced to 51 Months in Jail

Survivor winner Richard Hatch, who won $1 million in the debut season of the show, was sentenced to 51 months in jail Tuesday, for failing to pay taxes. The 45-year-old was convicted in January of not paying income tax on his reality TV prize, as well as other earnings. The charges carried a maximum of 13 years in prison and when Hatch was convicted in January, US District Judge Ernest Torres said he expected to sentence him to between 33 and 41 months. Torres said he issued a harsher sentence because Hatch had committed perjury repeatedly throughout his trial. He said, "It seems unfortunately very clear to me that Mr. Hatch lied." Hatch made a statement before his sentence was read saying, "I believe I've been completely truthful and completely forthcoming throughout the entire process." He claimed he thought the show's producers would pay his taxes and pleaded ignorance about money matters, saying he forgot to tell his accountants about some income.

Spears Lashes Out at Latest Child Vehicle Charges

Pregnant pop star Britney Spears insists she did nothing wrong when she drove her Mini Cooper convertible with son Sean Preston slumped forward in his car seat in the rear of the vehicle. The singer sparked outrage when photographs appeared of her eight-month-old son strapped in the backseat of her car facing forward instead of backward, which is the safer direction for car seats according to California motor-vehicle code. According to the code, babies who weigh 20 pounds or who are less than a year old should have their car seats facing backward. California Highway Patrol spokesman Tom Marshall says, "The seat is facing the wrong way. We like it when the child's head is facing back." The singer's representatives have rejected the criticism, stating that because the baby is already over 20 pounds, he is allowed to face forward. In a statement, a spokesperson says, "It has been reported that there is a photo of Britney Spears driving with her child sitting in a forward-facing child safety seat in the back seat of the car. Having a child in the child safety seat facing forward in the rear seat of the car is in compliance with California law. There is no law in California requiring rear-facing seats. In fact, there are only ten states that require a child to be in a rear-facing seat, and in two of those states it is not required if the infant is more than 20 pounds. Britney's son Sean weighs over 20 pounds. As such, Britney Spears was in total compliance with California law with the forward-facing child safety car seat with the baby strapped in properly in the back of the car." Spears has already received two visits from the Department of Children and Family Services - one in February, after she was photographed driving with her son sitting on her lap and one in April, when her son fell out of his highchair and injured his head. No action was taken in either case.

Johansson Denies NYC Mayor "Snub"

Stunning actress Scarlett Johansson was publicly embarrassed last week when she was portrayed as having 'stood up' the Mayor of New York at a press conference. Johansson was too busy filming her latest movie The Nanny Diaries to attend Mayor Mike Bloomberg's conference in Manhattan, which highlighted the city's plans to offer tax breaks to Hollywood studios in a bid to bring film and TV companies back to the Big Apple. At the conference, Bloomberg told reporters he was excited about standing "next to a real beauty, Scarlett Johansson... Now she's not here yet." When Johansson failed to show, the media were quick to assume it was the actress' fault. However, the Lost In Translation star insists she declined the invitation prior to the event, telling the New York Daily News, "We were never supposed to be part of the press conference. I am filming The Nanny Diaries and production will always comes first."

Barton To Say Goodbye to 'The OC'?

Actress Mischa Barton may be set to leave hit TV series The OC, according to media reports in the US. The 20-year-old actress, who plays Marissa Cooper on the show, has expressed a desire to focus on a film career. According to TVGuide.com, the show will return for its fourth season in the autumn, without Barton. The OC will air its season finale Thursday, where one character is killed-off. Producers have filmed several endings with different cast members dying, in order to keep viewers and the show's staff in the dark. One of the endings reportedly features Barton's character suffering a drug overdose.

Lopez Pregnant?

Singer Jennifer Lopez is reportedly expecting her first child with husband Marc Anthony, according to media reports in the US. Lopez appeared at the ALMA Awards in Los Angeles on May 7, sporting what appeared to be a small bump and telltale grey roots. The following day, the star abruptly cancelled her first concert tour without giving an explanation, further fuelling rumors of a pregnancy. Sources tell US publication In Touch the Monster-in-Law star is three months pregnant and that the baby will be born around Christmas. Anthony spoke publicly of having a baby with Lopez at the event saying, "I'm looking forward to starting a family." Lopez was scheduled to tour this month, with dates in Mumbai (Bombay), India; Dubai; Moscow, Russia: Sofia, Bulgaria; Istanbul, Turkey; and Thessaloniki, Greece. The singer has been threatened with legal action by the tour's promoters, who have promised to issue full refunds to ticket holders. Bulgarian promoter Nina Girginova says, "Whatever the reason is, she should have explained it, and even if she had lied it would have been better than not giving the fans any reason at all."

Bono Arrives in Africa

Rock activist Bono began a ten-day tour of Africa yesterday, where he plans to examine the achievements of his Make Poverty History campaign. The U2 frontman intends to highlight the progress the continent is making in the treatment of Hiv and AIDS as well as unveiling new plans to unite developing nation Lesotho's textile industry with US clothing giant Gap, to allow citizens to work their way out of poverty. The Apparel Lesotho Alliance to Fight AIDS (ALAFA) project will give textile workers free and unlimited access to drug therapy and HIV/AIDS treatment. Arriving in Lesotho capital Maseru, Bono said, "In a small African country the three issues - debt, aid and trade - come together in an unholy trinity. It's an important moment because what you see here and the reason why we have people with us, we're attempting to gang up on the continent's problems from many angles. It's a swarm of bees." Jamie Drummond, executive director of Bono's advocacy group Debt Aids Trade Africa (DATA), says, "We're going to look at foreign assistance working on the ground in Africa and see what is working and what is not. Effective aid backing good African leadership can get results, so let's do more of it. Why would you not do more of it? The timing of this is extremely important, not just because you can see all the results on the ground, but because at this very moment top policymakers in all of the G8 countries are looking at whether they can afford to keep their promises - whether in Germany, Canada, Italy, or France, and above all in the US Congress." Gap has also pledged 50 per cent of profits from the sale of products launched in conjunction with Bono's Red initiative to Africa's AIDS fund.

Hilton's Mother's Day Marred by Thieves

Hotel heiress Paris Hilton is fuming after thieves made off with a $10,000 bag of Mother's Day presents on Sunday. The brazen robbers snatched the gifts, which included Christian Dior shoes, sunglasses, handbags and perfume, from outside the Hiltons' palatial residence in Los Angeles. The bag had been left unwatched at the gate as the delivery person rang the intercom to gain access to the house. Hilton's spokesman Elliot Mintz says, "A fellow just whizzed by (in a car) and grabbed the package. (Paris) spent three or four hours shopping to put together this wonderful collection of things for her mom." Instead of being showered with presents, Kathy Hilton was treated to dinner at an exclusive nearby restaurant instead.

'American Pie' Actress in Photographer Fracas

American Pie star Shannon Elizabeth allegedly lashed out at a photographer, grabbing his camera, after he refused to stop filming her and her friends in New York City. The actress was walking through Central Park on Monday with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Lance Bass and Reichen Lehmkuhl, who won the fourth installment of reality TV show The Amazing Race. The photographer spotted the group in several different locations, according to website TMZ.com, and attempted to catch them on camera. Elizabeth can be heard on the cameraman's videotape pleading, "Will you stop filming? It's enough." After the cameraman responded, "They don't seem to mind me," the actress shot back, "We all mind. Stop." The film footage then cuts out because, according to the snapper, Elizabeth snatched his filming equipment, took the battery out and threw it on the street.

Snoop Dogg Barred from Britain

Rapper Snoop Dogg has been banned from entering the United Kingdom following his arrest for affray and violent disorder at London's Heathrow Airport last month. The hitmaker - real name Calvin Broadus - will be prohibited from traveling in the country for the rest of his life, and faces losing millions of dollars in potential performance fees, AllHipHop.com reports. Sources claim the UK's Home Office issued the ban based on his criminal record in the United States. In 1993 the hip-hop star was tried and acquitted for murder. Broadus has already been cautioned for the airport incident in which he and five members of his entourage caused a brawl when they were refused entry into British Airways' first-class lounge. He has also been banned from flying with the airline.
