Boy George Charges Dropped
British pop star Boy George dodged a five and a half year prison sentence yesterday, after a New York City court dropped charges of cocaine possession against him. During the hearing at Manhattan Criminal Court, the former Culture Club singer - real name George O'Dowd - pleaded guilty to wasting police time by falsely reporting a burglary last year. The troubled 44-year-old was sentenced to five days of community service and fined $1,000. He must also pay court costs of $160 and has been ordered to attend a drug rehabilitation program. O'Dowd says, "I am relieved and happy that this case has been disposed of. I love New York and I'm looking forward to coming back and working in the States later this year." O'Dowd was arrested at his Manhattan home on October 7 after police found 13 bags of cocaine following a burglary call to the apartment. The singer's lawyer Lou Freeman maintained that many people had attended a party at the apartment and that his client didn't know who owned the drug.
