50 Cent's Movie Ads Draw Criticism

50 Cent's upcoming movie Get Rich Or Die Tryin' has sparked outrage among Los Angeles community leaders, who are repulsed by the gun theme in advertisements for the film. Billboards, posters and other ads for the movie depict the rapper brandishing two handguns as a promotion for the movie, which is based loosely on the star's real-life rise to musical success from the streets of New York City. Website AllHipHop.com reports the campaign has led to a call for a boycott from a number of organisations. Najee Ali of Project Islamic Hope, says, "Gun violence is one of the leading causes of death for young black males in South Central Los Angeles and across urban America. It's irresponsible for Paramount Pictures to promote and market a movie that glorifies carrying guns. Guns are weapons of mass destruction that are used to kill people. We demand that Paramount Pictures remove these negative images of death and destruction, images that our young children are influenced by." The group is demanding that the ads showing weapons be immediately pulled from the marketplace. Representatives for Paramount have yet to comment.

Union in Nightclub Racism Row

Gabrielle Union's publicist is calling for celebrities to boycott Los Angeles nightclub Mood, after the venue's owner allegedly cancelled the actress' birthday party when he discovered she was African-American. The Bad Boys II beauty was set to celebrate her 33rd birthday with a starstudded bash at the top club this weekend, until Mood owner David Judaken allegedly realised he had mistaken Union for white beach volleyball player Gabrielle Reece. On Friday , Union's publicist Holly Shankoor of BWR Public Relations sent an email around the publicity industry, urging a boycott of Mood. Shakoor's email wrote, "You should all be aware of an incident that occurred with my client Gabrielle Union and the owner of Mood. "Mood was going to host her birthday party. Once the owner found out she was African-American, he not only cancelled her party, but he proceeded to say that he 'didn't realise Gabrielle Union was black'. "You can discourage your celeb clients from going (to Mood) and also doing any events (there)." Shakoor quoted Judaken as saying, "I don't want (Union's) kind of people in my club." In a statement to E! Online website, Judaken says, "All the statements written in her email are untrue. To say that this event was cancelled over race or creed is hurtful and slanderous." Jadaken is now considering legal action against Shakoor, declaring her email "has an immediate negative impact on my business". Shakoor's bosses at BWR says their employee's email "by no means reflects our official position on this matter".

Sharif Sued

Film legend Omar Sharif is set to be sued by a US parking attendant who alleges the star punched him and shouted racial abuse after a payment dispute. The Lawrence Of Arabia star was furious when his euros were refused by a valet at a Los Angeles restaurant in June and allegedly proceeded to hurl anti-Latino insults at Guatemalan-born attendent, Juan Anderson, before punching him in the head. Horrified restaurant employees instructed 75-year-old Sharif to wait in his car for the police, during which time he reportedly offered Anderson $50 to pretend the attack never took place. When the parking attendant refused, Sharif's driver appeared to lurch the Porsche at Anderson when he tried to block the vehicle's path. According to the complaint filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, Sharif had been drinking heavily during his lavish dinner with friends. Speaking yesterday , Anderson's lawyer John Carpenter said, "Today I filed a lawsuit against Omar Sharif, the actor, who violated the California hate crimes statute by assaulting and battering my client and calling him a 'stupid Mexican'." The car park employee is seeking $50,000 in civil penalties as well as damages for his injuries. In 2001 the Doctor Zhivago actor was given a one-month suspended prison sentence for head-butting a police officer in a casino near Paris.

Cage Chose Kal-El for "Magical Ring"

Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage decided to call his baby son Kal-El because he believes the name has a "magical ring" to it. Cage, 41, and his 21-year-old wife Alice welcomed the arrival of their first child together earlier this month, and stunned fans when they announced the baby's unusual name, which was originally given to fictional superhero Superman at birth. The Leaving Las Vegas star says, "Alice and I wanted to have a name that was exotic and American and which stood for something good, because our son is exotic and he's American and we both think he's good. But having said that, I always liked the sound of the name. It has kind of a magical ring to it: Abracadabra Kal-El Shazam!"

Newell Clashes With Producers Over Potter Financing

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire director Mike Newell is keen to make more movies about the teenage wizard, despite slamming executives who refused to give him enough money for lavish scenes. The director was stunned by the small budget for the fourth movie in the magical movie franchise, but insists Warner Brothers made up for the shortfall by allowing him complete artistic freedom. He says, "I very clearly remember that within a couple of months of starting work I was intensely angered by the lack of money - that there wasn't enough money to make the film properly and that really p**sed me off." But he concedes, "Warner Brothers and the producers were quite extraordinary about letting me go."

Lohan's Headlamp Rage

Lindsay Lohan is reportedly furious after an opportunist sold a headlamp from her black Mercedes on internet auction website eBay, following a car crash which left her needing hospital treatment. The Herbie: Fully Loaded actress was driving through Hollywood when her vehicle was hit by a van making an ill advised u-turn. Lohan and a female pal were later treated for minor injuries while the sporty car was taken to a nearby garage. The listing read: "Friend of mine works at the place where this car was taken. Today is your lucky day, you are bidding on the passenger side headlight of Lindsay's black Mercedes."

Hilton Left Red-Faced After Denying Sizemore Acquaintance

Socialite Paris Hilton has been left red-faced after a photo was released of her at Tom Sizemore's home, only days after she denied his claims the pair had sexual relations. In the troubled actor's sex video, The Tom Sizemore Sex Scandal, the Saving Private Ryan star alleges he had a one night stand with Hilton in 2001, when the reality TV star was 19. Sizemore claims Hilton remained at his house after a party and suggested they sleep together. He added, "She knew what she could do to people." Last week, Hilton denied Sizemore's claims, declaring, "He is not an acquaintance of mine, nor have I ever had intimate relations with him." To contradict her statement, Vivid Entertainment, who are releasing Sizemore's DVD, sent out a photo of Hilton posing with Sizemore in 2001.

Jackson Returns Antiques After Failing To Pay

Superstar Michael Jackson has returned a set of antiques to a Los Angeles gallery after failing to pay a third of his bill at the store. The Thriller star was accused of owing $128,875 of a $378,875 bill for merchandise he bought from Kamad Enterprise's Mayfair gallery, back in May. Kamad Enterprise's lawyer Saul Reiss said Jackson has returned a Chinese chest, a mirror, clocks and a barometer, which were bought in the May sale and another one from last year. Reiss adds, "The matter was resolved to the satisfaction of all parties." Jackson's attorney Brent Ayscough confirms, "There was a return of some disputed items of furniture."

Hayden Hits Broadway - For Four Minutes

Star Wars star Hayden Christensen made his Broadway, New York, debut on Monday night when he appeared briefly in a 10 minute play. The Canadian actor took to the stage at the American Airlines Arena for a four minute performance in short play This Is Now, as the son of a cancer-stricken man who makes a pass at his ex-girlfriend. Christensen was among the big name actors and actresses taking part in the fifth annual 24 Hour Plays benefit, which raises cash for non-profit groups in the Big Apple. Other celebrities who participated in the six plays, which were performed in a 24 hour period on Monday, included Elizabeth Berkley and former Brat Packers Ally Sheedy and Andrew McCarthy. The event raised over $100,000.
