Cruise: "I Can't Be Cool with Holmes"

Tom Cruise excused himself for leaping all over TV talk show Oprah Winfrey's sofa and giggling through their recent interview by stating love had turned him into a lunatic. The movie star spent the first half of his TV interview with Winfrey, which aired yesterday in America, cooing about his girlfriend Katie Holmes and punching the air. He said, "I can't be cool... I can't be laidback. It's something that has happened and I feel I want to celebrate it and I wanna celebrate her. She's a very special woman." But the movie star admits he was cool when they first started dating - as he laid on a series of romantic surprises including a motorcycle ride on a beach and decorating their hotel room in Rome, Italy with rose petals. He added, "I don't really go to restaurants because I like doing things... I'm a romantic, I love stuff like that... I like treating a woman the way that she deserves to be treated. I was raised by women and I love this woman. With me, it's scuba diving and motorcycles and roses. I like seeing people happy... and I celebrate that and so I feel like I wanna share it with people because it's something that's very special." And when Winfrey asked him if he truly was smitten with Holmes, he laughed, "I'm standing on your couch!"

Paris Hilton Ad Crashes Burger Chain's Website

Paris Hilton's racy new burger commercial has proved so popular, a site touting the clip has crashed. The site - WWW.SpicyParis.Com - touting Hilton's ad for burger chain Carl's Jr, crashed for four hours as internet surfers raced to see the seductive swimsuit-clad socialite doused in suds. The 30-second commercial, which features the hotel heiress washing a Bentley and chomping on Carl's Jr's Spicy Bbq Burger in a stringy black swimsuit, has generated media attention since hitting the US TV airwaves on Thursday. The special site was launched by Carl's Jr at the same time, featuring a special 60-second version of the ad. A day later, the site crashed and was down for about four hours, the company said. Carl's Jr's executive vice president of marketing, Brad Haley, says in a statement, "It was a mixed blessing. It turned out that Paris was too hot for our servers." In 2003, Hilton created another online stir when she was featured in a leaked homemade sex video with her ex-boyfriend Rick Salomon.

Paltrow To Front Estee Lauder

Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow is set to follow in Elizabeth Hurley's footsteps as the new face of the cosmetics giant Estee Lauder. An international print and TV advertising campaign for Pleasures fragrance featuring the 32-year-old Shakespeare In Love star will begin in the autumn. Paltrow says, "Years ago, endorsing a product was considered something a movie actress shouldn't do, but now having a contract is almost like a status symbol." Besides a small role in the upcoming movie Running With Scissors, the Estee Lauder job reportedly is Paltrow's first since the birth of daughter Apple, whose first birthday was on May 14. And the actress, married to Coldplay rocker Chris Martin, admits her new modeling deal affords her a perfect schedule. She adds, "It allows me to be with my daughter, which is what I want to do until some fantastic movie role comes along and makes me change my mind." But at the same time, Paltrow admits she's not exactly the poster child for cosmetics, adding, "I don't tend to wear a lot of makeup in my daily life - just lip gloss, sunscreen and maybe some mascara."

Crowe Sworn To Secrecy Over Kidnap Plot

Cinderella Man lead Russell Crowe hated the secrecy surrounding his 2001 Al-Qaida kidnap plot because he felt like Elvis Presley, turning up at the Academy Awards with a posse of bodyguards. The Gladiator star was contacted by the FBI "in the middle of the night" and told of a plot to kidnap him and other leading Hollywood stars - but he was sworn to secrecy. He recalls, "What are you supposed to do? The thing that really bothered me at the time was not being able to discuss it with people - to explain why I suddenly looked like Elvis Presley with 14 guys around me."

Lohan Wants To Be Taken Seriously

Teen star Lindsay Lohan is fed up with the press only being interested in her wild social life, because she's desperate to be taken seriously as an actress. The 18-year-old actress has signed up to work with Meryl Streep on the upcoming movie from legendary director Robert Altman, the film version of A Prairie Home Companion. And Lohan is enraged her fellow actresses Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson, who are both just two years older than her, are highly praised for their work whereas she's known for her relentless partying and troubled family life. She says, "It's hard for me to have to watch that. I work just as hard as those people and sometimes (the media) make it seem that they're more mature because their fan base is more mature and my fan base is younger So they're writing about me going out all the time. It's easy to over-publicize me. I'm a young kid and I have a lot of pressure... (but) I know work is work."

Alba To Act Unpaid for AIDS Foundation

Sin City star Jessica Alba has displayed her generous side at the Cannes Film Festival by offering her acting talents for free - to raise money for AIDS charity Amfar. The French industry event, which finished on Saturday, held a benefit for the US research foundation and raised a staggering $3.2 million. Organizers attribute the huge amount to the backing of a galaxy of stars - including Benicio Del Toro, Paz Vega, Mickey Rourke, Brittany Murphy, Clive Owen, Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek. But Alba caused the greatest stir by vowing to star unpaid in one of The Lord Of The Rings producer Bob Weinstein's movies, if he agreed to bid $100,000 for tennis lessons with sports stars Monica Seles and Boris Becker. Weinstein was happy to honour Alba's proposal, writes website Pagesix.Com.

DeGeneres: 'De Rossi Is Forever'

American comedienne Ellen DeGeneres is convinced new girlfriend Portia De Rossi is 'the one' after several broken relationships. The chat show host, who won a handful of Daytime Emmy Awards on Friday, ended her four-year relationship with photographer Alexandra Hedison to be with De Rossi in December. DeGeneres high-profile coupling with Anne Heche ended in 2000, when the Psycho actress left the comic for cameraman Coley Laffoon - now her husband. DeGeneres gushes to America's Allure magazine, "I pray that Portia and I are together the rest of our lives. I never thought my life would have turned out this way. To have money. Or to have a gorgeous girlfriend. I just feel so lucky with everything in my life right now."

Jackson Accuser's Mother Accused of Fraud

The mother of Michael Jackson's child molestation accuser has herself been accused of committing fraud by a welfare officer. The teenage boy's parent allegedly committed fraud when she did not disclose on a welfare application that her family received money from a $152,000 lawsuit settlement 10 days earlier, Mercy Manriquez, an employee of the Los Angeles County Department Of Public Social Services, testified yesterday. Jackson's lawyers also called an accountant to show that the family dined, shopped and ran up other expenses at a cost of $7,000 to Jackson during a week they were allegedly being held captive by the pop star. Manriquez testified that she handled the woman's November 15, 2001, application for assistance. The application, signed by the accuser's mother, said that the woman had no other sources of income and no assets. Before the accuser's mother testified in the trial, she invoked Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination on the welfare issue and was not required to talk about it. However, Judge Rodney S. Melville allowed the defense to present records and testimony about it to jurors. The jury was shown checks for $769 each in monthly payments that were deposited in the bank account of the woman's then-boyfriend, who is now her husband. The big payment is alleged to have come from the settlement of a lawsuit against department store Jc Penney, which the accuser's family had sued, complaining they were beaten by security guards. After the money was separated between the woman's three children, her former husband and attorney, her share was $32,307, which was deposited into an account for the benefit of her alleged victim son, according to defense-hired accountant Mike Radakovich, who analyzed the records. Within days, however, Radakovich said, most of the money had been withdrawn and was used to buy a cashier's check for $29,000 written to a Ford dealership. The woman testified previously in the trial that she considered buying a car with the money but never did. There was no evidence that the check was ever cashed. Jackson, 46, is accused of molesting the 13-year-old accuser in February or March 2003, giving him alcohol and conspiring to hold the family captive. He denies all charges.

Members of Bobby Brown's Entourage Stabbed

Two members of Bobby Brown's entourage have been hospitalised after suffering knife wounds during a fight at Sean 'P Diddy' Combs' Atlanta, Georgia restaurant early yesterday. Authorities believe My Prerogative singer Brown was not involved. Authorities are looking for the suspects, who drove away. The cause of the fight has not yet been determined. Police detective Dl Dixon says, "There was a lot of music and talking going on. It could have been something as simple as a bump, you know, somebody bumped into each other." Shayne Brown, 21, and Kelsey Brown, 20, were treated at separate hospitals, and both were in stable condition yesterday. Attorney Vincent L. Dimmock says Combs and his company, Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment Group, are cooperating with the criminal investigation.

Minogue's Management Dismiss Marriage Reports

Pop beauty Kylie Minogue's management has rubbished reports she's agreed to marry her French lover Olivier Martinez. British tabloids yesterday claimed Olivier proposed to the star hours after she was diagnosed with breast cancer, after his cousin Stephane told reporters Minogue's illness had made him realize how important their two-year relationship is. But a spokesman for the star's manager Terry Blamey has dismissed claims the singer will tie the knot with Olivier, according to Australian newspaper Melbourne Herald Sun. The 36-year-old had the cancerous lump removed from her breast on Saturday at a Melbourne, Australia hospital in what doctors described as a successful procedure.
