Emmy-Winning Actress Isabel Sanford Dies
Isabel Sanford, the actress best known for her Emmy Award-winning portrayal of Louise "Weezie" Jefferson on the hit sitcom The Jeffersons, died Friday of natural causes in Los Angeles; she was 86. Sanford had been hospitalized since July 4 due to complications from preventive surgery on a neck artery 10 months ago. Initially a Broadway actress, Sanford made her feature film debut in 1967 as the maid to Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. A number of TV and movie appearances followed, including a recurring role on All in the Family, in which she and Sherman Hemsley stole scenes as Archie Bunker's new, upwardly mobile neighbors. Their popularity proved so strong that they were spun off into their own sitcom, The Jeffersons (featuring the catchy theme song "Movin' on Up"), which ran for 10 years; in 1981, Sanford became the first African-American woman to win an Emmy for Best Actress in a Comedy Series (she also received six additional nominations). After The Jeffersons ended, she made innumerable sitcom appearances in shows ranging from The Simpsons to The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and also re-teamed with Hemsley for a series of commercials for Denny's restaurants. Sanford is survived by a daughter, two sons, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. --Prepared by IMDb staff
Love in Hospital While Arrest Warrant Issued
Courtney Love has been admitted to hospital following a turbulent 24-hour period which saw her issued with an arrest warrant and reportedly tell police she'd had an abortion on her 40th birthday. The singer was taken to a New York hospital after being carried from her home on a stretcher dressed only in a lace-trimmed camisole and a pair of handcuffs - due to a gynecological condition. Her lawyer Michael Rosenstein says, "She is conscious and in a stable condition." Los Angeles authorities issued a warrant for Love's arrest on Friday after she failed to appear for an arraignment on a felony charge of assaulting a woman in April. Love's lawyer told the judge they did not believe her presence was required in the Californian case. Commissioner Dennis Mulcahy replied, "I don't understand the confusion, Mr Rosenstein. You are here. Why isn't she?" Mulcahy rescinded Love's bail of $55,000 and issued an arrest warrant with a new bail figure of $150,000. Earlier on Friday, cops were called to Love's apartment, when she apparently told them, "Today is my birthday and I had an abortion."
