Oscar Winner Peter Ustinov Dies at 82

Legendary character actor Peter Ustinov, who won two Oscars for roles in Spartacus and Topkapi, died Sunday night in Switzerland of heart failure; he was 82. Also a prolific writer, Ustinov began his acting career at the age of 17 and sold his first screenplay (for The True Glory) at 24. At age 30, he earned his first Oscar nomination for his turn as Nero in Quo Vadis?, effectively establishing himself as one of the screen's most versatile supporting actors. Though known to most moviegoers as a portly British character actor, Ustinov was a multi-talented entertainer who also wrote, produced, directed, and starred in the acclaimed 1962 film Billy Budd, wrote innumerable novels and plays (including Romanoff and Juliet), and traveled extensively as a humanitarian, raconteur and humorist. Ustinov's biographer, John Miller, once remarked that the actor, who was knighted in 1990, "had enough careers for about six other men." Though confined to a wheelchair later in his life, Ustinov continued to raise money for UNICEF and most recently appeared in the film Luther. Other notable roles include his turns as Agatha Christie detective Hercule Poirot in Death on the Nile, Evil Under the Sun and Appointment with Death as well as films Lorenzo's Oil, Logan's Run, Hot Millions (for which he also received a Screenplay Oscar nomination), The Sundowners and The Egyptian. --Prepared by IMDb staff

Bobby Brown Released After a Day

Troubled R&B pioneer Bobby Brown is a free man again - after spending Wednesday night in jail for failing to pay child support. The singer, 35, was released from a Dedham, Massachusetts prison Thursday after Norfolk Probate And Family Court received the $63,500 Brown owed ex-love Kim Ward, the mother of two of his children, now 12 and 14. Brown was released from a Georgia institution early on Monday - where he had been serving time for a probation violation of a previous drink driving charge - to attend the Family Court hearing. On Wednesday, Family Court judge Paula Carey found Brown in contempt of court and ordered him to spend 90 days behind bars or until he came up with the cash, after he testified he was unable to pay the child support owed. The source of the support payment has not been revealed. One of Brown's probation violations included the alleged assault of his singer wife Whitney Houston, who checked out of a drug rehabilitation clinic on Wednesday after five days.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Out of 'Angel' Finale

Angel fans are disappointed to learn Sarah Michelle Gellar will not be reprising her Buffy role in the show's season finale, after bosses decided against it. Joss Whedon, the show's executive producer, tells TV Guide's online edition that he didn't invite Gellar to appear in the final episode of Angel - a Buffy, The Vampire Slayer spin-off, because he didn't want it to "revolve around a guest star". He explains, "I want to end the show with the people who've been in the trenches together, the characters who have lived - and occasionally died - together, the regulars." Whedon invited Gellar to appear in the second-to-last episode, but she wasn't available because she was in Tokyo, Japan, working on the horror film The Grudge when the show was being shot. Whedon's partner, Jeffrey Bell, says show executives eventually learned that Gellar was available for the final episode despite being booked at the time of the penultimate one. But by that time, the second-to-last episode had already been written and shot, and getting her into the last episode "didn't make any sense" with the plot that had been written so far. Bell adds, "By the time it became a possibility, the ship had sort of sailed."

Woody Loses Court Battle

Veteran filmmaker Woody Allen has lost a six year legal battle, after the New York State court dismissed efforts to halt the construction of a building site. Manhattan maverick Allen had been part of a group of wealthy Upper East Side New Yorkers - called the Citi Neighbors Coalition Of Historic Carnegie Hill - who filed a lawsuit against the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission. The protest organization wanted building on the 10 story development to stop, because they say it ruins their upmarket neighborhood. But Thursday, the court ruled the lawsuit was irrelevant as the building was nearly completed. A spokesperson for the Citi Neighbors says, "I just feel so emotional because we're just the little guys, and we lost. There's that old saying, 'You can't fight the city.'" Allen was unavailable for comment. The apartments which start at $7.8 million will be finished in June this year.

Cruz Dating McConaughey?

Actress Penelope Cruz is reportedly romancing her movie co-star Matthew McConaughey in the aftermath of her high-profile split with Hollywood favorite Tom Cruise. The Spanish screen star and film hunk McConaughey are currently shooting Sahara in the Moroccan desert, and set insiders claim Cruz turned to the actor to seek help after her relationship with Cruise collapsed. And sources in Africa tell Britain's News Of The World tabloid the pair have fallen for each other. One says, "It's been a long, hot, exciting shoot if you know what I mean. Watching the two of them together, you could almost see the sparks fly."

Hilary Swank Set To Be New Calvin Klein Model

Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank is set to be the face of a new sexy underwear range by Calvin Klein. The Boys Don't Cry actress will follow in the footsteps of Hollywood hunk Woody Harrelson, rapper-turned-actor Mark Wahlberg and football star Fredrik Ljungberg in the long list of superstars who have modeled for the company. Hilary will feature in the Sensual Support "intimate apparel collection". Kim Vernon, senior vice president of global advertising and communications for Calvin Klein, says, "Hilary is the perfect choice for this campaign. She looks absolutely beautiful and easily conveys the sensuality that we want." I also think that she is not the expected choice for a women's underwear campaign and these pictures will present her in a way that she has not been seen in her professional work so far." The new collection will not be in stores until July.

Jackman Breaks Extra's Hand

Clumsy X-Men star Hugh Jackman accidentally broke an extra's hand on the set of his latest film Van Helsing. The Australian actor plays the legendary monster hunter alongside English rose Kate Beckinsale in the horror adventure, which is set to hit cinemas in May. The 35-year-old hunk says, "I broke an extra's hand on this thing. I was getting lifted and propelled and couldn't stop. I put my hand out and felt this guy crumple in front of me. I found out later he'd been running away. He thought I was going to fire him - for getting in the star's way."

Clooney Dumped for Not Showing Allen Enough "Respect"

George Clooney was dumped by ex-girlfriend Krista Allen - because she felt she wasn't getting enough "respect" from the Hollywood hunk, says her representative. The pair met two years ago during the filming of Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind and have parted ways and reunited a number of times. But earlier this month, pals revealed the latest break is for good. The pretty brunette's spokesperson tells American magazine In Touch Weekly, "Krista broke it off with George because he wasn't treating her with the respect she feels she deserves. She decided it was a good time, as he was about to travel to Europe for four months to work on Ocean's Twelve." While pals say Allen was eager to settle down with Clooney soon after meeting him, the former star of TV's ER has always been very public about his desire to remain a bachelor. The actress' representative adds that the pair will remain friends, and have plans to work on a project together for American cable TV network HBO.

Julianne Blasts Facelift Queens

The Hours star Julianne Moore has slammed actresses who have cosmetic surgery to look younger - because she thinks it stops them looking human. The acclaimed actress insists she'll never go under the surgeon's knife, because it's an obscene way to try to regain your youth. She says, "I think it's insane frankly. We're promoting this idea of a face that doesn't look like a person, and that becomes the standard of beauty, and the people think, 'What's wrong with my face?' I have two kids and I'm at this one place in my life where I don't want to look like I did when I was 22. It wouldn't match where I am in my life. There are things that are more important than how we look."

Jude Law's Antics Anger Miller

Hollywood heart-throb Jude Law infuriated his girlfriend Sienna Miller recently by choosing to focus his attention on a stunning blonde during a pal's birthday party. The Cold Mountain star and his actress belle were attending a bash in honor of his chief bag carrier Ben Jackson when Jude reportedly spun Sienna into a jealous rage, because he spent most of the night chatting to a woman called Fiona and ignored his girlfriend. A fellow party-goer at the Primrose Hill party says, "she wasn't happy at all, Sienna likes to be at Jude's side 24/7. And he spent most of the night chatting with Fiona who was easily the most beautiful girl in the room. If he was trying to make her jealous it worked a treat." Other revelers at the The Queen pub event included Jonny Lee Miller and Sean Pertwee.

De Matteo Hosted Courtney Love's Infamous Night

The Sopranos star Drea De Matteo was especially shocked to learn of Courtney Love's recent troubles at a New York nightclub - because she hosts the night where the alleged attack took place. Singer Love was arrested for reportedly throwing a microphone stand at a fan during a late night show at the Plaid club earlier this month, just a day before she landed in trouble again after diving off stage onto a concert photographer at the Bowery Ballroom. And Mateo - who plays mobster's girlfriend Adriana La Cerva in the hit TV show - believes Love is being picked on. She says, "It's a party I host with a bunch of friends in New York, and I wasn't there that night and I heard she got arrested. I probably would have tried to prevent that from happening. I think they arrested her because she was famous. Any other rocker that gets up they wouldn't care.
