Hollywood Remembers Bob Hope at Memorial Service

Hundreds of Hollywood stars turned out yesterday to pay their respects to late comedy veteran Bob Hope at a special Mass. Hope's memorial service was held at St. Charles Borromeo Church in North Hollywood, and 900 mourners gathered together to honor the star, who died aged 100 on July 27. Among the variety of guests was former American President Gerald Ford and his wife, Betty Ford, former first lady Nancy Reagan, Mickey Rooney, Raquel Welch, Julie Newmar, Marie Osmond, Phyllis Diller, Ed McMahon, Gary Owens and Norm Crosby. Connie Stevens said before the service, "We're going to miss him. He was a tremendous force on Earth." And former Magnum, P.I. star Tom Selleck said, "Bob always called personally when he wanted you to work with him. It meant a lot and it made it hard to say no."

Cameron Diaz Looks To Stay On As Top Earner

Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle star Cameron Diaz is determined to stay at the top of Hollywood's earning tree after breaking all the records to become the highest paid actress in Tinseltown. The 30-year-old girlfriend of pop hunk Justin Timberlake topped the list of the highest female earners with $40 million in one year, in a new survey compiled by the 2004 Guinness World Records. She beat off stars including former number one Julia Roberts, Halle Berry and Nicole Kidman, after taking top-paid roles in movies Gangs Of New York and Shrek. And the There's Something About Mary is expected to keep up her lofty pay packet, as there's no sign of her taking a break from her hectic schedule in the near future. She is currently making Shrek 2 and will follow that with the comedy Fun With Dick And Jane. That means Diaz is likely to earn a staggering $64 million a year, which will keep her at the top of the Guinness list. In the records taken from Forbes Magazine for the year 2001/2002, Diaz is hotly followed by J.Lo who took home a healthy $39.4 million, and then Sandra Bullock, who earned $32 million. Explaining Cameron's appeal, a casting director tells British tabloid The Sun, "Most actresses fit into one mould, either kooky or serious. But Cameron can do both equally well. It makes her much more marketable and means she isn't restricted to just one kind of film. Her possibilities are endless. She's very lucky. There are few actresses who can do both sorts of movies so well." In other records, Friends star Matthew Perry took home a staggering $816,000 for an appearance on axed show Ally McBeal - making him the highest paid TV guest star.

Ford Hits Out at US in Iraq

Hollywood superstar Harrison Ford has voiced his concerns over the American-led war in Iraq. The veteran actor said armed conflict was not the solution to Iraq's problems. Speaking in the Spanish capital Madrid to launch his latest film, Hollywood Homicide, Ford also took a swipe at US gun laws and the 'big hit' nature of the country's film industry. Ford, 62, said, "I'm very disturbed about the direction American foreign policy is going. I think something needs to be done to help alleviate the conditions which have created a disenfranchised and angry faction in the Middle East. I don't think military intervention is the correct solution. I regret what we as a country have done so far." And, despite having starred in the original Star Wars trilogy, Ford also attacked Hollywood for making too many films more akin to "video games" than real life. He added, "It seems everybody is going for the big hit, for the most return." And although he has appeared in action films, he said America's liberal gun laws had greatly contributed to the country's crime problems.

Dispirited Spike Lee Turns To Television for Work

Controversial filmmaker Spike Lee has turned to TV because he is finding it increasingly difficult to make a feature film. The Do The Right Thing director says the US film industry is moving in a different direction to the one in which he wants to go, and as a result he'd rather work on TV shows for a while. He says, "It's hard to get a film made, my kind of film anyway, in Hollywood these days. The movies that are getting made - sequels, action movies, silly comedies, comic-book movies - don't suit me. I need a good story, interesting characters, complexities and some kind of unique point of view." Lee admits he has no feature film projects in mind at the moment and is instead making a film for the cable television network Showtime called Sucker Free City which examines the gangs in San Francisco from the perspectives of three young men - one white, one black and one Chinese. He adds, "Shooting a movie for a cable channel like Showtime is like working on a feature. You're free to do what you want. You're not restricted in areas like language and violence."

Norton Urges Love To Seek Help

Actor Edward Norton is begging his former flame Courtney Love to enter rehab - following months of raucous behavior from the gravel-voiced singer/actress. According to New York gossip site Page Six, the 25th Hour star was reportedly furious when Love claimed Norton would "never marry" sexy Mexican actress Salma Hayek because "he can barely understand what she's saying". Although Love apologized to the now separated couple in June, Norton is still alarmed by Love's frequently erratic behavior. Recent reports claim the widow of Kurt Cobain flew into a rage as she was being fitted with $18,000 hair extensions for Thursday night's MTV Video Music Awards in New York. Love has since backed out of her gig at the glitzy ceremony, but her spokesman insists her decision was not based on the hair incident. He says, "She got a nail stuck in her left foot at a photo shoot for her album, America's Sweetheart. It's infected, so she won't be presenting." Just last week, Love told detectives that Virgin Records Senior Vice President Josh Deutsch slapped her in the face - and then denied the alleged assault ever happened the very next day, saying the cops had misunderstood her. And in February, Love was arrested and held for 12 hours on suspicion of verbally assaulting a Virgin Airlines flight attendant who refused to let her bring her psychiatric nurse into first class.

Bobby Brown To Spend Nine More Days in Jail

Troubled singer Bobby Brown will serve nine more days in jail, before spending two months on house arrest, a judge ruled Tuesday . The jail time and 60 days of house arrest for Brown - who was expected to be released yesterday - was ordered by DeKalb County State Court judge Wayne Purdom. Brown, 33, was ordered to undergo another drug assessment and sentenced to a total of 14 days in the DeKalb County Jail. But the judge credited Brown for the five days he's already spent behind bars since his arrest Friday. Brown was arrested in the Atlanta, Georgia, suburb of Alpharetta at a seafood restaurant, where he was dining with his wife, Grammy-winning singer Whitney Houston. Authorities say Brown was arrested because he failed to show up for court- ordered community service, drug treatment or a random drug test stemming from a 1996 drunk-driving charge. Brown's lawyers say he failed to check in with a probation officer because he was suffering from an injured elbow. They also claim he has been mourning the deaths of seven family members in recent months. They contended that he had complied with a court order and completed 80 hours of community service in California. But the judge said Brown will get credit for only 40 hours because the order specified the service was to be done in Georgia.

Whitney Houston Confronts Police

Whitney Houston furiously confronted officers as her husband Bobby Brown was arrested outside a restaurant on Friday night, according to police. Brown has been in jail since his arrest in Atlanta, Georgia, for violating his probation from an earlier drunk driving conviction - and his wife was far from happy to see him go. Sergeant Chris Lagerbloom says, "She was outwardly frustrated. She was upset. She was yelling and screaming and pointing fingers at one of our officers. We deal with emotions like that from family members all the time. To say that she was calm about it would be a misstatement." But he adds that officers didn't consider charging the 40-year-old singer with disorderly conduct. Meanwhile, says Lagerbloom, Brown "was as calm and cordial and professional as you could be". Brown, 33, was arrested because he failed to show up for court-ordered community service, drug treatment or a random drug test.

Parker Fuels Nose Job Reports

Sex And The City actress Sarah Jessica Parker has almost certainly undergone surgery to reshape her nose, according to a top cosmetic consultant. Recent photos of the TV star indicate she's made a "subtle" change to her face, because the bump on the bridge of her nose appears to have been removed, according to British showbiz magazine Heat. British-based cosmetic expert Jan Stanek says, "It's almost impossible to say that Sarah Jessica hasn't had any work done. This looks like a classic choice that so many Hollywood stars opt for, something subtle in order not to attract too much attention. If you look at the sides of Sarah's nose, you can see that her bump looks like it's been reduced slightly and the end of her nose looks less bulbous. The procedure for doing this would be slightly simpler as all you need to do is shave some of the bone off the nose as opposed to reconstructing the entire thing."

Hollywood Urged To Stop Smoking

Attorneys general from 24 American states are begging the movie industry to cut down smoking on the big screen - because it encourages teens to take up the habit. Their concerns stem from a June study that reveals children who watch movies in which actors puff heavily on cigarettes are three times more likely to turn to nicotine themselves than those exposed to less smoking in films. On Tuesday, the attorneys sent a letter to Motion Picture Association Of America (MPAA) President Jack Valenti, asking him to combat the issue. Tom Dresslar, a spokesman for California Attorney General Bill Lockyer, says, "We're not saying any law has been broken. We're just asking out of a concern for the health of our kids that the industry do what it can to ensure that kids don't start smoking." MPAA spokesman Rich Taylor has confirmed Valenti has received the letter, and insists he'll respond accordingly. Taylor adds, "Smoking is, if you'll recall, a legal activity. That being said, he'll be reading carefully the letter and the study it references."

Ellen Burns Documentary

Ellen DeGeneres has burned the ill-fated tour documentary her ex-lover Anne Heche directed, even though it cost her a fortune to make. Heche and the project's cameraman Coleman Laffoon fell in love while they were touring with the comedienne and making the film, and the two have since wed. DeGeneres funded the project, but admits trying to salvage it after she and Heche broke up three years ago was too painful. She says, "It's burned. I had borrowed money to make this thing, so I was trying to salvage it. You talk about a bad experience, to sit there and watch, basically, reality TV - I watched until I couldn't watch anymore."
