The End For Buffy?

Sexy actress Sarah Michelle Gellar plans to give up Buffy The Vampire Slayer following the success of her latest movie Scooby-Doo. The 25-year-old star has played high-kicking evil-conquering lead character Buffy Summers for the past five years since the hit TV show began. But she now sees her future on the big screen following the box-office success of Scooby-Doo, in which she played Daphne Blake. She says, "It's important for me to go out on top. I don't want to be part of a show that runs eight years only to have people say of it, 'That should have ended years ago'." The producers of the show are now working on ways to continue the series, which will otherwise end after its seventh run. The most likely possibility would see Buffy's role taken by her teenage sister Dawn, played by Michelle Trachtenberg. There is also a chance that Sarah may be persuaded to make regular cameos. Buffy executive producer Marti Noxon says, "I'm not sure that Sarah will come back. It would be very hard to continue without her, although program makers 20th Century Fox might try." Sarah has been forced to miss out on a string of top movie roles due to the time- consuming constraints of the Buffy schedule and has also complained about the toll the show's stunts take on her body. However in addition to Scooby-Doo she did star in 1999's acclaimed Cruel Intentions and in 2001 flick Harvard Man.

Mel Gibson: Cinema Savior

Devout Catholic Mel Gibson is desperate to make a movie about the life of Jesus Christ - but only if The Vatican approves. The father of seven is developing a new movie entitled Passion. Last month, Gibson was scouting rocky hillscapes in southern Italy that resemble first-century Palestine. According to the Italian Catholic newspaper Avvenire, he has also consulted with theologians and church officials "at the highest level" to gain an understanding of Christ's final suffering. His interest has led to speculation that the star of Mad Max and Lethal Weapon is ready to take on the role of Jesus, following in the footsteps of such luminaries as Jeffrey Hunter in King Of Kings, Max Von Sydow in The Greatest Story Ever Told, Willem Dafoe in The Last Temptation Of Christ and Kenneth Colley in Monty Python's Life Of Brian. But his spokesman Alan Nierob discourages talk that Mel will join the ranks of Jesus-portrayers, saying only, "I seriously doubt Mel is playing Christ."

Gilliam Vows To Make Don Quixote Flick With Depp

Twelve Monkeys director Terry Gilliam insists his ill-fated biopic of Don Quixote will eventually be made. The former Monty Python cartoonist had to abandon production on the film, which was set to star Johnny Depp, after a catalogue of disasters. F16s from a nearby Nato base made filming impossible by repeatedly flying over the set, while French actor Jean Rochefort, set for the role of Quixote himself, got a prostate infection and had to return to Paris. Finally a huge storm hit the set and carried off essential equipment. But Gilliam says Depp is on board for a reshoot if he can find $40 million and buy the script back from the German insurance company which now owns it. He says, "The film is in my head. I've watched it there thousands of times. I just want to get it out. All I know is that in September 2003, Johnny has a window in his film commitments, and all my efforts are concentrated towards that. We're gonna buy back the script, get the crew together, and probably recast some roles. But it's going to happen." A documentary, Lost In La Mancha, about the making of the film, hits cinemas around the world over the next few months. Gilliam's poor luck has been blamed on a Don Quixote curse, which also hit a previous effort to make a movie by Orson Welles, who died without ever realising his dream.

Mariah On The Mend

The man attempting to rescue Mariah Carey's career has revealed how he plans to turn her fortunes around. Lyor Cohen, president of Island Def Jam records, is one of the most powerful men in the music business. He called Mariah after her much publicised departure from Emi and the accompanying multi-million dollar payoff, determined to set her straight. Mariah is now working on a new album on the island of Capri, after Cohen's belief in her star power changed her luck. He explains, "I cold-called her and I said, 'I think you are an unbelievable artist and you should hold your head up high. If you have this magnificent voice and you write such compelling songs, why are you dressing like that, why are you using all these collaborations? It's like driving a Ferrari in first.'"

Jolie: Billy Bob Stayed Away From UN Work

Actress Angelina Jolie realized there were cracks in her marriage when husband Billy Bob Thornton refused to accompany her on her trips as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. The Gia beauty took on the UN mantle in March last year, and has taken her duties strongly to heart, even coming under fire from fellow Americans for donating money to Afghan refugees displaced by President George W Bush's war on terrorism. But contrary to claims from Thornton's publicist, she insists her rocker and actor husband refused to join her crusade, saying, "He's never been to a refugee camp. I asked him to come, but he chose not to. You learn what a person is about by their behavior. And sometimes what they do hurts you."

Drudge Threatens Baldwin Over Gay Slur

Controversial internet columnist Matt Drudge has threatened to sue Hollywood star Alec Baldwin after the actor accused him of being gay. The Pearl Harbor star made the claims during an appearance on shock jock Howard Stern's radio show. According to New York gossip site Pagesix, the 44-year-old actor told Stern, "Matt Drudge hit on me in the hallway at ABC Studios in LA when I was doing the Gloria Allred show. He came right up to me and he looked like he had a fork and knife in each of his hands. He said, 'Do you have any Tabasco sauce? I want to drizzle it all over you.'" But Drudge - who himself was unsuccessfully sued by the former US President Bill Clinton's White House for $30 million dollars for libel - has hit back, saying, "This is a guy whose career is in turnaround, and his mind is not holding up well. I've never met Alec Baldwin. If he has fantasies about being cruised by guys maybe he can star in 'Cruising Part 2: The Troll Years.'" And the reporter adds that he's not sure suing Baldwin for slander would be a profitable venture - particularly after the star's high profile and expensive divorce from Kim Basinger earlier this year . He says, "My lawyer tells me what said about me is actionable, but does Alec have any cash left to collect damages?"

Stunt Hell On 'Bad Boys 2' Set

Stuntmen filming a chase scene on the set of the Bad Boys sequel avoided death yesterday, after the car they were driving ploughed through two street lamps. Andy Gill, the driver of the camera car which was following the action lost control and sped off the road. The sequel's stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence weren't on the set when the accident occurred. No one was badly injured in the accident, which took place in Miami, Florida.

Asia Cooks Up A Treat For Vin

Italian actress Asia Argento showed off her legendary cooking skills on the set of action movie XXX and became Vin Diesel's official cook. The sexy Italian actress, who plays the screen hunk's love interest in the new film, cooked up bolognese for the Fast & The Furious actor - and he fell in love with the tasty treat. She says, "All Italians are great cooks and I love cooking. I cooked up my bolognese for Vin and he loved it. I don't know how he kept in shape. He ate a lot of that."

Wes Bentley Plays Up On Set

Upcoming actor Wes Bentley, who is earning a reputation for being "difficult" on set, has allegedly fallen out with Miramax head honcho Harvey Weinstein. The intense American Beauty star is said to have so annoyed Weinstein while filming The Four Feathers that the movie mogul vowed never to work with him again. Always diplomatic Weinstein told gossip website Pagesix.Com, "Given his performance in The Four Feathers, I'd work with him again in a heartbeat." But the site insists that Bentley is "known for his mercurial moods", and adds that since shooting to stardom with American Beauty he has dropped out of both Pearl Harbor and a biopic about Montgomery Clift.

Little Actor Dies

Pint-sized American TV star Joshua Ryan Evans has died at the age of 20 after losing his battle against heart trouble. The 38-inch actor's Timmy character ironically died in his daytime soap series Passions yesterday. Evans had a recurring role on Ally McBeal as child lawyer Orin Koolie. He also played the child Grinch in Jim Carrey's hit film How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
