Macdowell Ashamed Of Being A Smoker

Andie Macdowell has admitted that taking up smoking late in life has made her feel ashamed and a bad example to her children and her fans. The 40-year-old actress took up smoking after her divorce from former husband Paul Qualley, and although it provided a short term answer to her emotional problems for someone of such rigid self-control her nicotine addiction turned into a nightmare. Her three children, aged 15, 12 and seven thought she had let them down and her several attempts to give up reduced her to crying for weeks. MacDowell reveals, "It's bizarre to start smoking as a woman of 40, but cigarettes were absolutely fabulous. I was terrified that people would find out that I was a closet smoker. I have three children I have responsibilities, I have a certain persona to uphold in society because of who I am. As a spokesman for L'Oreal, I did not want to set a bad example. There were tears and dramas."

Christina Ricci's A Bad Flirt

Hollywood actress Christina Ricci is attempting to overcome a grave problem - she's a terrible flirt. Successfully grabbing the attention of the opposite sex is a skill she's yet to master and she remains a very clumsy learner. Ricci moans, "When I like a guy, sometimes I'll be sarcastic and that can backfire on me. Boys don't understand that I'm just trying to flirt." And her misjudgment has also led to disastrous dates. She recalls, "There was this hot guy who I really wanted to go out with. I threw in a couple of Sat-vocabulary type words during our conversation, and he said, 'You like to use big words, don't you?' Doing that is just kind of a fun game we play in my family. And when I told this guy that my upcoming movie Prozac Nation was based on Elizabeth Wurtzel's book, he said, 'I don't read books.' That was it for me."

Dionne Warwick: Britney Inspires Strippers

Singer Dionne Warwick has criticised pop princess Britney Spears for becoming a role model for strippers. The 61-year-old legend, arrested at Miami airport this month for allegedly possessing marijuana, thinks that Britney's dance moves are too suggestive and degrading to women, and that she should set a better example to young children. Grandmother Dionne explains, "I don't really approve of the way our children are forced into being looked at as playboy bunnies. I think it's degrading. They're not being given an opportunity to develop into women. Britney would not be a role model. Not for my kids anyway."

Affleck Left Speechless By Sporting Hero

Ben Affleck was left speechless when faced with the prospect of interviewing his sporting hero Wade Boggs. The movie star was making an appearance on actor Tom Arnold's cult TV sports program, The Best Damn Sports Show Period, when he was asked to interview a guest via satellite. Affleck agreed but simply couldn't get his words out when Boston Red Sox baseball hero Boggs appeared on the screen in front of him. The pitcher managed to fill the void by telling Affleck he was a fan of his films Pearl Harbor and Armageddon, before the red-faced actor meekly said, "I thought you were a really good hitter."

Ozzy's Wife Gets Royal Call-Up

Ozzy Osbourne's foul-mouthed wife Sharon has been chosen to host cable music channel VH1's coverage of the Queen Of England's jubilee celebrations. Rocker Ozzy will perform at the Buckingham Palace garden party alongside Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Phil Collins and Aretha Franklin and now his wife's in on the act too. Sharon Osbourne, who was recently named one of People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People, will provide a running commentary in between the June 3 performances. VH1 will air highlights from the concert on June 9.

Tiffany Fears For Her Safety

Eighties teen pop sensation Tiffany has taken out a restraining order against her estranged husband - because she's terrified he may try to harm her. The couple were arrested after a fight at make-up artist Bulmaro Garcia's home earlier this month. Tiffany was later released without charges - and now she doesn't want her husband near her. She admits she only agreed to meet with Garcia at the request of the couple's nine-year-old son Elijah. The recent Playboy pin-up says, "My son wanted both of us to go to lunch. I thought it would be harmless but he said some things that I believe shouldn't have been said to me in front of my child." A fight broke out that resulted in Garcia locking Tiffany out of his house and the singer breaking a window with a shovel: "I wanted to get to my son." Tiffany admits she worries about Garcia's sanity: "I don't really know what's going through his mind and I don't think we can act like normal human beings."

Penthouse Sued Again Over Anna "Nude" Pics

Mens magazine Penthouse is in trouble again over its publication of false Anna Kournikova "nude" photos - disappointed readers are trying to sue the publication. The top-shelf glossy settled for an undisclosed sum last week with Judith Soltesz-Benetton after publishing topless photos of her, claiming the images were of the Russian tennis babe. But now Miami, Florida lawyer Reed Stomberg has filed a class-action lawsuit on behalf of himself and every other male who purchased the June issue. Stomberg explains, "The sole reason I paid the $8.99 was for the alleged Anna pictorial. I bought it for a friend of mine, not to say I didn't take a quick peek at the pictures."

Godzilla Links To New Terrorist Attack

FBI investigators put New York's Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge on full alert last week after renting out a copy of Roland Emmerich's Godzilla. The film was referred to cryptically by Al Qaeda prisoner Abu Zubaydah during FBI questioning and agents felt sure clues of a new terrorist attack would be found in the movie, according to Hollywood trade magazine Daily Variety. The 1998 movie, which starred Jean Reno and Matthew Broderick, depicts the two New York landmarks in peril at the hands of dinosaur Godzilla. Zubadayah, believed to be one of Osama Bin Laden's right-hand men, suggested future terrorist attacks might be targeted at "the bridge in that movie" and "the statue in the water."

Winona's Anger At Charity Pranksters

Hollywood babe Winona Ryder is fuming after discovering pranksters are cashing in on her shop-lifting charges. The sexy actress - who has been accused of trying to steal clothes from a Hollywood store - was furious when she found that clothes she autographed for an charity are being auctioned on internet site eBay. According to British tabloid the Daily Star, the items appear on the sale site with "shoplifted by" printed above the star's signature. Winona - who earlier this month herself poked fun at the accusations in a sketch on TV comedy show Saturday Night Live - is due to appear in court next Monday.

Johnny Depp Gets Voice Coach

Hollywood hunk Johnny Depp has hired a voice coach to help him pick up a Scottish accent for his new movie Neverland. Depp was ridiculed after his attempt at a English 'cockney' accent in last year's Jack the Ripper murder flick From Hell. So he has hired the coach to help him perfect his Scottish twang, in time for his role as Peter Pan author J.M. Barrie alongside Kate Winslet in the movie - due for release next year.
