Pierce Brosnan Still 007

James Bond producers have slammed reports that they are planning to replace Pierce Brosnan with unknown Scottish actor Gerard Butler. Butler himself was said to have fueled the speculation by claiming he is to be the next 007. A spokesman for Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, says, "It just isn't true and I wish these rumors would stop. We have been inundated with calls all week, Pierce Brosnan will play James Bond in the forthcoming production and for the foreseeable future."

Time Names Ang Lee 'America's Best Director'

Taiwanese film director Ang Lee has been named the best director in America by Time Magazine's American Best series. Lee edged ahead of fellow directors because of the broad scope of his work, which ranges from the martial arts masterpiece Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to period drama Sense And Sensibility. Time called Lee a cosmopolitan chameleon who seems at home in any culture but is detached enough to see it with an ironic acuity. Lee's martial arts fantasy Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon made Academy Award history earlier this year by being the first Asian film to win the foreign-language film award. It also picked up Oscars in art direction, cinematography and best original score.

Will Smith Saves Choking Fan

Will Smith saved a young fan from choking to death after a surprise birthday joke went wrong. The rapper and movie star was shopping in Los Angeles when a fan spotted him and asked him to surprise his girlfriend, who was dining nearby. Smith agreed and sneaked up behind the burger-munching teenager and started singing 'Happy Birthday' to her. The poor girl was so shocked she started choking. Smith performed the Heimlich manoeuvre and the girl spat the lodged burger onto the counter of the burger joint. He then signed autographs and completed his 'Happy Birthday' song before making his way out of the diner.

Charlize: Looks Are Not Important

South African screen starlet Charlize Theron believes that her looks have nothing to do with the success she has enjoyed in Hollywood. There has been a recent trend of models-turned-actresses (Mtas) landing movie roles, but Charlize doesn't see herself as fitting into this category. She reveals, "I really don't understand why anyone would think that you have to be physically perfect to be in movies because it's so not true. When you look at the amount of Mtas that are successful it's a minute proportion. You might get in the door for a couple of years playing the beautiful girl, But then Hollywood is going to be done with you."

Scully Opens West End File

Actress Gillian Anderson is leaving The X Files for the glitzy London stage. The pretty redhead's revelation means that she will follow in the footsteps of a growing number of Hollywood stars, including Nicole Kidman and Kathleen Turner, who have found the lure of London's West End irresistible. Anderson claims that the next series of The X Files will be her last, with David Duchovny having already left the show. Initially she wants to spend more time with her six-year-old daughter, Piper, before taking a theatre role next summer. She says, "The stuff I am going to do is as far from Scully as humanly possible."

Robert Carradine Cheats Death In Car Crash

Actor Robert Carradine is lucky to be alive after slamming his racing car into a concrete wall at 120 miles per hour. Carradine, the youngest son of late acting legend John Carradine and half brother of Kung Fu star David Carradine, has been driving racing cars for almost 20 years, but something went horribly wrong when he was testing out a car in mid-June. A source says, "The car was completely totalled, Robert was extremely fortunate to escape with his life. He was rushed by ambulance to Henry Mayo Memorial Hospital in Valencia, California in pretty bad shape. He broke both legs and fractured his right hand. Now he has screws in his knees and his hand is in a cast." Robert won't be able to put any weight on his legs for at least a month and then he'll have to work very hard in rehab.

Diane Keaton's Given Up On Men

Actress Diane Keaton is fed up with men - and has given up hope of finding a boyfriend. The First Wives Club actress has realized at the age of 55 that men aren't the all important part of her life, and has given up looking for Mr Right. She says, "It's probably out of the picture. I remember when I was young I honestly believed in some ridiculous way that you would find someone who would be the person you lived with until you died. I don't think that because I'm not married it's made my life any less. That old maid myth is garbage." Keaton is adoptive mother to sons Dexter, 5 and Duke, 6 months, and had passionate affairs in the past with Woody Allen, Warren Beatty and Al Pacino. She says, "I now understand that these are episodes we go through with people and they don't last at all. And now that I'm older, time is valuable."

Piper's Love Of Bird Watching And Wild Plants

Piper Perabo has burned her back on Hollywood to concentrate on bird watching and botany. The pretty 24-year-old actress has become obsessed with sightings of a family of red-tail hawks in Central Park, New York, and she'd prefer to check them out than attend glitzy parties. She says, "They weren't known to nest in urban areas. So when they saw one in the park carrying twigs, they all completely flipped out. There's actually a perfect bench to see them, but I have yet to go up with my book, my map of the park, and my opera glasses. I can't wait." And when she's not bird watching, Perabo is attempting to grow her own exotic plants. She adds, "Did you know the climate of New York City rooftops is more akin to the American prairie than it is to your typical urban street? So now I grow wildflowers and herbs up there."

Pitt To Perform For Coens

Hollywood star Brad Pitt will team up with the Coen Brothers for his next film. To The White Sea will see Pitt kill and maim his way through Second World War Tokyo, Japan, in the movie. Don't expect much speaking - the brothers, known for their movie eccentricities, are planning to make the film silent.

Paltrow Takes To The Air

Gwyneth Paltrow is flying high in her next film - as an air stewardess. A View From The Top sees Gwyneth trying to better herself in the plane game. Gwyneth says of the sexy role: "I'm in underwear for half the movie." She co-stars with Kelly Preston, who had plenty of fun preparing for the role with husband John Travolta, an accomplished pilot who has a small collection of planes. She says: "John and I have actually played naked stewardess on occasion, it's always a lot of fun."
