In what is the calm before the storm of fall premieres that will hit the small screen next week, Thursday saw a demo win for Fox as Gotham (1.0/4) returned and The Orville (1.1/4) debuted in its regular slot. Moving from its long-held Monday perch to Thursday, the fourth season of the Batman backstory series opened down double digits from its Season 3 opener of September 19, 2016. Declining 17% among adults 18-49 from the fast affiliates of last year's debut, Gotham was… »
‘The President is Missing’: Showtime Adapting Bill Clinton & James Patterson’s Thriller Novel Into a TV Show
2013 was a big year for fictional movie thrillers involving the President of the United States, with Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down both blasting into theaters within three months of each other. Those were simpler times when movies about the president didn’t pale in comparison to the hellish nightmare of the behavior of the actual […]

Fox Developing Drama Based on Book ‘Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class’ (Exclusive)
Fox has ordered a script for a drama series based on the book “Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The book by Lawrence Otis Graham was a non-fiction piece in which Graham interviewed members of some of the most prominent black families in America. The series is described as a multi-generational family drama uncovering the lives of America’s black upper class by chronicling a dazzling Chicago dynasty with a dark secret threatening to rip it apart.
Should it move forward, “Our Kind of People” would be the latest Fox show to focus on wealthy black Americans. The network has found great success with “Empire,” which explores the drama inside of a multi-million dollar family-run record label headed by characters played by Terrence Howard and »

RelatedCable/Streaming Scorecard: What’s Renewed? What’s Cancelled?
TNT tells TVLine that contrary to what The Last Ship cast member Travis Van Winkle, who plays Danny Green, announced (and later deleted) via Instagram earlier this week, the action-drama is not necessarily heading into dry dock after next summer’s Season 5.
“We shot two seasons simultaneously; the fourth is currently on the air and the fifth will return next summer,” reads the network’s statement. “We greenlit the fifth with the idea that it could be the final season, however »
David Lyle, Veteran Executive and Reality TV Champion, Dies at 67
David Lyle, a TV veteran who championed unscripted TV and headed National Geographic Channels and Fox Reality Channel, died Thursday at his home in Los Angeles after a long battle with cancer. He was 67.
After working in TV in Australia and in London, Lyle came to Los Angeles in 2001 as head of FremantleMedia North America where he helped launch “American Idol” on Fox. He most recently served as president of Pact US, an advocacy org for unscripted TV producers.
Earlier this year, Lyle helped steer the merger of Pact US with the rival Nonfiction Producers Association, creating Npact. The organization reps most of the largest unscripted TV production companies.
“David Lyle was one of the few television executives who thrived on both a creative and business level,” said Howard T. Owens, co-CEO of Propagate Content, who worked with Lyle at Nat Geo. “He was one of the kindest, most fun, and »

USA and Oxygen Acquire Rerun Rights to ‘Chicago P.D.’
“Chicago P.D.” is one of three Chicago-based procedurals that have become pillars of NBC’s primetime lineup. “Chicago Fire” launched the franchise in 2012, followed by “Chicago P.D.” in 2014 and “Chicago Med” in 2015. Last season, NBC fielded a fourth installment, the legal-themed “Chicago Justice,” but the show was not renewed for a second year.
The “Chicago” shows have been solid performers for NBC but according to industry sources they have been a tough sell in domestic syndication. “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.” have been on the market for some time. Industry sources said “P.D.” in the combined deal with NBCUniversal siblings USA and Oxygen fetched about $500,000 an episode. That »

The Brave: Five Things to Know About NBC's Two-Pronged Military Drama
To explain the genesis of NBC’s upcoming military drama The Brave, series creator Dean Georgaris invokes not the strategic genius of Sgt. Major Jonas Blane or the war-is-hell mentality of Capt. Benjamin “Hawkeye” Pierce, but the poor choices made by one Walter White.
“I don’t come from a military family. I don’t have a political axe to grind. I don’t have a particular fascination with death, but I am fascinated with human resiliency and human ingenuity,” Georgaris (Life of Pi) tells TVLine. After watching documentaries about American Special Forces teams, “I was continually impressed with their ingenuity. »
‘Neo Yokio’ Voice Cast: A Visual Guide to Who Played Whom in New Netflix Animated Series
[Editor’s note: This post contains very minor spoilers for Season 1 of “Neo Yokio.”]
Netflix has a fascinating track record with animation, taking big chances especially with adult-aimed series like “BoJack Horseman” and “F Is for Family” over the last few years. Its latest venture, “Neo Yokio,” looks nothing like either of those series — instead, it draws its visual inspiration from decades of anime as it brings us into the futuristic world created by Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig.
What does give “Neo Yokio” something in common with its Netflix sisters is its A-list voice cast, which features an eclectic but overall critically acclaimed group of actors, including Jaden Smith as young demon hunter Kaz, who just wants to be the most eligible bachelor in town, despite the growing sense that things might not be what they seem in this society.
Who are the other famous faces behind the scenes? Below is an illustrated guide to all of Neo Yokio’s VIPs.

Why “Nathan For You” Should Be On Your Watch List
Most of us could use a good dose of comedy now and then. Not all sitcoms can successfully generate pure, unadulterated humor that resonates with the larger viewing audience, but we think that “Nathan For You” is the show that will deliver. If you think that you would benefit from some side splitting humor, then this docu-reality comedy series is something you should tune in for, and here is why we make this bold assumption. Nathan Fielder is outrageously funny The series follows Nathan as he approaches a variety of small business owners and offers them advice. His pearls of

General Hospital: Fans Don’t Know to Think of Nelle
General Hospital fans are trying so hard to figure Nelle out. Her entire situation on this show has been ugly. At first she came in all sweet and fun and nice, and people liked her. Then she got into the middle of Carly and Sonny’s marriage, she lied, and she did some horrible things to them to get revenge. She was wrong thinking they were the ones who did what she wanted to get back at them for, and she made a lot of mistakes. By that point, however, people stopped trusting her. And then she was injured and she

‘Fuller House’ Creator Says the Olsen Twins Really Aren’t Coming Back: ‘I’ve Given Up Asking Them’
We can all agree that, for all its many merits, “Fuller House” has one fatal flaw: a distinct lack of Olsen Twins. Neither Mary-Kate nor Ashley has chosen to reprise the iconic role of Michelle Tanner, whose antics helped make the original “Full House” such a hit and launched the sisters’ subsequent careers; in a new TVLine interview, the Netflix reboot’s creator says he’s resigned himself to the fact that it’s never going to happen: “Personally, I’ve given up asking them,” explains Jeff Franklin.

Fuller House Season 3: Weigh In on Those 'Turbulent' Finale Cliffhangers
Not since “Princess for a Day” Michelle got herself lost in Disney World has the future of the Tanner family been left so — for lack of a better term — up in the air.
But before we dive into the sheer Japandemonium of Fuller House‘s midseason finale, let’s go over some of the more ludicrous developments of Season 3:
D.J. and Steve continued their (often literal) song-and-dance routine, all the while assuring C.J. that there was nothing to worry about. Even when she walked in on D. »
