8 hours ago | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Hollywood and Asian royalty rubbed shoulders Feb. 18 at the Cambodian premiere of Angelina Jolie's new directorial endeavor, First They Killed My Father. Adapted from Khmer Rouge survivor Loung Ung’s memoir, the movie tells the story of Ung’s dramatic childhood and features a cast of mostly nonprofessionals, reproducing the nightmare of life under Pol Pot.

Noticeably absent from the low-key affair — held in the Cambodian city of Angkor — were Hollywood A-listers, including Netflix's chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, who, sources say, paid a whopping $25 million for the Khmer-language release, due out this fall, with an awards-qualifying rollout »

Oscars 2017: Our Predictions in All 24 Categories (Photos)

Some years, the question when it comes to Oscar predictions is Who? This year, it’s How Many? Such is the apparent dominance of Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land” as Oscar night approaches. The musical is not only a prohibitive favorite to win Best Picture, it’s a strong contender in 10 or 11 other categories as well, with a chance to tie or break the all-time Oscar record of 11 wins. But there hasn’t been double-digit dominance at the Oscars in more than a decade, since “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” went 11-for-11 in 2004. Last year’s Best. »

Berlin Film Review: ‘Monsieur Mayonnaise’

29 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Indefatigable Australian filmmaker-artist Philippe Mora criss-crosses the globe tracing his family’s survival during the Holocaust in Trevor Graham’s ingredient-heavy documentary “Monsieur Mayonnaise.” Revisiting some of the material Mora himself used in last year’s “Three Days in Auschwitz,” the film is a frequently fascinating if over-egged affair in which the French-born subject storyboards a personal graphic novel while recounting the remarkable story of his German-Jewish father’s work for the French Resistance and his French-Jewish mother’s miraculous escape from the gas chambers. Unnecessarily structured as a tongue-in-cheek mystery with Mora himself in the guise of a film noir detective, “Monsieur Mayonnaise” is nevertheless an eye-catching, engrossing romp sure to play well in the art house equivalent of the Borscht Belt.

Philippe’s father Georges Mora, born Gunter Morawski in Leipzig, received his nickname “Monsieur Mayonnaise” during WWII, but not everyone knew where the moniker came from. As »
