TV Ratings: 'Black Lightning' Gets a Promising Premiere on CW

TV Ratings: 'Black Lightning' Gets a Promising Premiere on CW
Good news for the CW. It seems the network still hasn't exhausted its viewers' appetite for superhero shows.

Black Lightning joined the lineup on Tuesday night, making it the fifth comic book series on the network — seventh, if you're counting genre-divergent entries iZombie and Riverdale. The first hour pulled a strong 0.8 rating among adults 18-49 and 2.3 million viewers. Those numbers are quite sound by CW standards, especially when you consider the fact that lead-in The Flash, the CW's No. 1 series, only performed incrementally better. Black Lightning shared The Flash's score in the key demo and lost fewer...

'12 Strong' Review: He-Man War Movie Is Horse of a Different Color

'12 Strong' Review: He-Man War Movie Is Horse of a Different Color
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer thinks big, and his war movies can range from noisy idiocy (Pearl Harbor) to near brilliant (Black Hawk Down). Luckily, 12 Strong sees the value in substance as well as spectacle. Based on Doug Stanton's 2009 bestseller, Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of U.S. Soldiers Who Rod to Victory in Afghanistan, this rough-hewn drama has a compelling, mostly untold story to relate. After 9/11, an elite Special Forces unit comprised of 12 Green Berets led by Captain Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth), were dropped into Afghanistan in response to the attack.

Angelina Jolie to be Honored by American Society of Cinematographers

The American Society of Cinematographers has selected Angelina Jolie as the recipient of its 2018 Asc Board of Governors Award.

The presentation will be made at the 32nd annual Asc Awards for Outstanding Achievement on Feb. 17 at Hollywood & Highland’s Ray Dolby Ballroom.

The Asc Board of Governors Award is given to individuals in the industry whose body of work has made “significant and indelible contributions to cinema.” It is the only Asc Award not given to a cinematographer, and is reserved for filmmakers who have been champions for directors of photography and the visual art form.

“Angelina Jolie sets a high standard,” Asc president Kees van Oostrum said. “She is a true artist, with a strong vision and collaborative spirit. She has also entertained us through her work, but more importantly has brought significant social issues to our attention. For her wide-ranging accomplishments, we are honored to present her with our Board of Governors Award.”

‘The Blacklist’ Team on the 100th Episode: A Heist and a Walk Down Memory Lane

‘The Blacklist’ Team on the 100th Episode: A Heist and a Walk Down Memory Lane
In crafting the 100th episode of “The Blacklist,” executive producers Jon Bokenkamp and John Eisendrath knew that they wanted Nathan Lane to play the role of blacklister No. 100 — Abraham Stern — a cunning manipulator who has devoted his life (and the lives of many innocents) to recovering the fortune that is his birthright. In the episode, Red (James Spader) encounters Stern when he goes on the hunt for a legendary treasure.

“It’s a big, super fun, heist episode,” says Bokenkamp. “And it’s incredible to see Nathan and James go head-to-head.”

While Eisendrath adds that they put “some special sauce” in this episode, due to its milestone status, he says the team also wanted to ensure it would please the devoted fans by matching the usual tone and providing a walk down memory lane.

“We didn’t want to be terribly self referential, but we do have a storyline that very explicitly references an episode that aired

'Showdown in Manila': Film Review

'Showdown in Manila': Film Review
Only those still obsessively watching videocassettes of their favorite '80s and '90s-era B-movie actioners will find anything of interest in Showdown in Manila. And even they may decide that nostalgia has its limits when it comes to Mark Dascascos' directorial debut starring co-starring Alexander Nevsky and Casper Van Dien. A mishmash of action movie and buddy cop clichés rendered in incompetent fashion, this wink-wink homage to 1991's Showdown in Little Tokyo makes its inspiration seem like a classic.

Nevsky, like Arnold Schwarzenegger, is a three-time winner of the Mr. Universe contest. But while he possesses a similarly impressive physique, he...

Box Office: ‘Jumanji’ Poised for Three-Peat, Despite Challenge From ‘12 Strong’
“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” is poised for a three-peat at the North American box office this weekend, but will face challenges from Afghanistan war drama “12 Strong” and heist thriller “Den of Thieves.”

Jumanji” is likely to take in as much as $20 million in its fifth frame, which will lift its total domestic take to around $320 million — making the action-comedy one of the top 60 domestic performers of all time, with plenty of drawing power in the weeks to come. International performance for the Dwayne Johnson-Kevin Hart vehicle has been impressive with $385 million so far.

12 Strong,” produced by Alcon Entertainment, Black Label Media, and Jerry Bruckheimer, will pose the greater threat, with tracking showing an opening in the $14 million to $17 million range at 3,002 locations — including Imax, premium large format, and Dolby Cinema. Warner Bros. is handling distribution through its output deal with Alcon.
