Fox is taking legal aim at another TV streaming service. The site is run by eccentric provocateur Alki David and its name is most likely a reference to Aereo, the TV streaming service whose backers include media mogul Barry Diller. NBC Makes Pilot Commitment With Cleopatra

11 August 2012 1:47 PM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

The drama about the legendary Egyptian queen will be written by Marc Seitzman (as part of an overall deal he has with ABC Studios, who are producing the project). It's described as a period drama with romance, magic, gods, and probably a few other things you rarely see combined this side of pay cable (not even AMC would dare.) NBC has made a few expensive mistakes with period dramas (Rip Playboy Club), but if they amp up the love-triangle aspect, add ancient proto-bikinis, and skip the bunny ears, anything's possible. »

Lorne Michaels Isn’t Producing the Oscars

11 August 2012 10:34 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

The Academy Awards is one of the only televised events that gets high ratings despite consistently low expectations; while viewers look forward to finding out who the Oscars winners are, many dread all the montages, awkward jokes, and hours of their lives that must be wasted before anyone even mentions "Best Picture." When Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels was floated as a possible producer for this year’s ceremony, however, even the most avid Oscar hate-watchers seemed encouraged. After all, Michaels has decades of experience producing entertaining live television, much of which is much less cringe-worthy than anything involving James Franco, Billy Crystal, and/or Snow White. Sadly, ABC rejected Michaels’s suggested Oscar host, Jimmy Fallon, and now The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Michaels has rejected ABC’s offer for him to produce. »

If I'm part of the action genre, then, well, I'm proud of that, and I love good action films. But I don't focus on my work in this way." »
