Reality Check: Awful Eliminations, Questionable Front-Runners Tarnish The X Factor, The Voice

18 November 2012 1:53 PM, PST

Not all reality singing competition contestants are created equal. And when the best of ‘em are sent way too soon to the results-show guillotine, it can result in a creative tailspin worthy of the World War I Flying Ace under heavy fire from The Red Baron.

That was pretty much what went down this past week on The X Factor and The Voice — and on an all-new Reality Check, my cohost Melinda Doolittle and I try to figure out (with some help from our friends from Homeland, Doctor Who, and Sherlock) where voters went wrong, and how the shows can restore their respective mojos. »

Jeremy Renner Hosts Saturday Night Live: Watch Video of the Best and Worst Sketches!

18 November 2012 6:59 AM, PST

Another week, another Saturday Night Live opening monologue that found its guest host in a moderately amusing bit of musical theater. For those of you keeping score at home, we’re now eight episodes in to Season 38, and six of our hosts having kicked things off by either singing and/or dancing.

Jeremy Renner, for his part, made things a little more interesting this week by showcasing his piano-playing skills on alternate theme songs to three of his recent films, but alas, his caveat that he’s not known for comedy proved all too prescient. Renner frequently seemed so focused »

Ratings: Malibu Country Drops Again, Shark Tank and CSI: NY Top Night

17 November 2012 10:12 AM, PST

ABC’s freshman series woes continues, as Malibu Country — which started off country strong — declined for a second consecutive week.

With lead-in Last Man Standing itself slipping 5 and 12 percent to 7.1 million total viewers and a 1.4 rating, the Reba-repped sitcom dropped 9 and 24 percent week-to-week to 6.7 mil/1.3. Versus its robust debut, Malibu has now shed 43 percent of its demo delivery.

Topping Friday in the demo was Shark Tank (6.7 mil/1.9), despite dipping two tenths, while CSI: NY (steady at 9.5 mil/1.4) drew the largest audience (with Blue Bloods on the bench).

Elsewhere on the night….

The Voice's Michaela Paige on Deadly High Heels, Bleeped Lyrics and the Origin of Her Mohawk

17 November 2012 9:36 AM, PST

Before she made the Top 12 on Season 3 of The Voice, Michaela Paige thought reality TV was “stupid and pointless.” Good thing somebody in her household felt differently.

The Mohawk-rocking 16-year-old explains that it was her father who sent to show producers a video of her singing Jessie J’s “Nobody’s Perfect” (taped at a New York City record-label showcase), and that fateful move led to her invitation to the Season 3 Blind Auditions and a spot on Blake Shelton’s team.

Of course, Michaela has other reasons to thank her dad, too. “He was the first one to discover me »

“This Christmas, the Earth will face a terrible, terrible danger. But as all humanity hangs in the balance, will anyone be able to persuade the Doctor to save the day?” asks series star Matt Smith in the first of two new promos for Doctor Who‘s 2012 Christmas Special.

“Yes,” grins Jenna-Louise Coleman, who’ll be costarring in the special, then somehow taking over as the Doctor’s new companion, despite the fact that things didn’t end so well for her when last we saw her in “Asylum of the Daleks,” the Season 7 premiere.

ABC Cancels Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue

16 November 2012 3:07 PM, PST

ABC has done what the U.S. Armed Forces could not: It sunk the Colorado.

The network cancelled Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue Friday, our sister site Deadline reports.

Both freshman dramas had struggled to maintain an audience. Thursday’s Last Resort, which reportedly was an important factor in whether or not the series would receive a full-season pick-up, saw a slight ratings drop to 5.8 million total viewers and a 1.3 demo rating.

Similarly, last Sunday’s 666 Park earned only 4 mil/1.3, matching the previous episode’s series low.
