Cannes Madness: Lunatic Stages Fake Assault On Christoph Waltz

Cannes is usually an international hotbed of film, but this year the Cannes Film Festival has become an unexpected epicenter for madness instead, as according to CNN, an onlooker armed with a starter pistol and a fake hand grenade staged an attack Friday afternoon during a live television interview with Academy Award winning actor Christoph Waltz.

No injuries were reported and police quickly subdued and apprehended the suspect.

According to the report, Waltz and BAFTA winning actor Daniel Auteuil were being interviewed outdoors by French cable station Canal+ along the famous Promenade de la Croisette when an unnamed assailant began firing shots. Waltz and Auteuil were hustled to safety as police quickly captured the attacker.

It was later determined that the shots were actually blanks. Additionally, the man was carrying a fake grenade.

"The bodyguards jumped over the barriers into the crowd and pulled him to the ground," witness Arthur Laiguesse told Reuters. »

Iran to Affleck: 'Bengo F**k Yourself'

"Argo" may have been the most acclaimed film of 2012, but there's at least one person who wasn't all that excited about it: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

And now, thanks to "Saturday Night Live" and the world's top Mahmoud Ahmadinejad impersonator, Fred Armisen, Iran finally has its revenge with the new viral hit "Bengo F**k Yourself."

Positioned as Iran's official cinematic response to "Argo," "Bengo F**k Yourself" features Armisen as Ahmadinejad as Affleck in a masterful tour de force parody of "Argo," Affleck and Hollywood in general. Plus it has the added bonus of featuring Affleck himself, who was on hand to both host "Saturday Night Live" and poke fun at his own film legacy courtesy of well-timed shots at "Gigli."

So check it out. And see for yourself why, when it comes to the Academy Awards at least, Iran has just one concise message for America: "Bengo F**k Yourself! »

'Star Trek Into Darkness' Beams Up Box Office Win

According to Film.com, "Star Trek Into Darkness" easily won the box office this weekend, bringing in an estimated $70.6 million ($84.1 million with Thursday factored in) to knock "Iron Man 3" off the throne.

That was well short of the $100 million Paramount was hoping for. But it's still a pretty solid take, especially considering the strong competition. Not only did "Iron Man 3" earn a robust $35.2 million in its third weekend of release, but "The Great Gatsby" also took in $23.4 million in its second frame.

Next weekend should be a battle royale as well, as all three blockbusters will be facing off against new mega-events "Fast and Furious 6," "The Hangover Part III" and "Epic." For now, though, you can check out the full box office report over on Film.com. »

'The Bling Ring' Made Paris Hilton Cry

17 May 2013 1:43 PM, PDT

Film critics may have wept over her performance in "House of Wax," but Paris Hilton's tears at the Cannes Film Festival came courtesy of Sofia Coppola. The 32 year-old heiress/model/reality TV star/singer/actress/Kim-Kardashian-before-Kim-Kardashian watched a screening of "The Bling Ring," Coppola's true-life tale about the teenaged burglars whose crime spree included a break-in at Hilton's house. She provided her real home as a location for the movie and cameos in it, as well.

"I was really emotional watching it," Hilton told a reporter for Vulture at the after-party. "I literally had tears in my eyes and I wanted to cry. I knew what happened with the burglaries, but I had never actually seen it — so watching it happen, I was like, 'Oh my God, this really happened to me. These kids were really in my house and did this to me.' It's so violating. It »

Here's Zach Galifianakis and Ken Jeong Doing Standup Together in 1998

17 May 2013 1:00 PM, PDT

The internet's really cool sometimes, guys. This is one of those sometimes.

Above we have a lost video from the nether years of the late '90s — 1998, specifically, which is a full (uses Macbook calculator) 15 years ago — featuring the now uber-famous Zach Galifianakis and the now pretty damn-famous Ken Jeong (whose movie, "The Hangover Part III," comes out next weekend) doing some standup comedy together at a coffee house in Los Angeles. It's a fun watch, especially considering the rapport these two obviously already had a full decade before they would star together in "The Hangover."

It just goes to show you: If you put in the work, and you never quit, and you wait a decade, and you have the talent of either Zach Galifianakis or Ken Jeong, good things can happen to anyone.

Some bulletpoint observations:

We forget that Galifianakis was at one point, um, kind of a stud? »

Bling Ring! Cannes Thief Makes Off With Over $1M Of Jewelry

17 May 2013 11:45 AM, PDT

As we all know, the Cannes Film Festival is the swankiest festival on earth. You pretty much have to wear a tuxedo to go to breakfast (there are "no tails, no croissant" signs up everywhere), and you can't throw a large rock without hitting someone rich and undeniably fabulous. But there's a dark side to the glamour, as Deadline is reporting that there was a jewelry heist that took place on Thursday night, with a brazen thief making off with over $1 million worth of Chopard jewelry. French authorities are asking festival goers to keep an eye out for a man in a black-and-white striped shirt carrying a large bag with a money sign on it.

What's ironic is that the theft took place on the same night that "The Bling Ring" premiered. "The Bling Ring," of course, is based on a series of robberies that were committed by young kids in Hollywood, »

What If Sofia Coppola, Jim Jarmusch and Terrence Malick Directed 'Fast 6'

17 May 2013 11:38 AM, PDT

Have you ever watched a "Fast and Furious" movie (any of the previous five qualify, including "Tokyo Drift," we guess) and thought, "Man, this is good, but I kind of wish there was less action. Less fights, less explosions, less street races. Actually, you know what would be great? If this was directed by Sofia Coppola." Of course you have. Who hasn't?

Well, wish no longer, friend. Above, we have an entertaining cartoon depiction of three versions of the upcoming "Fast and Furious 6" — one from Sofia Coppola, one from Jim Jarmusch, and one from Terrence Malick — and we're happy to report that they're all wonderfully artsy in their own respective Coppolian, Jarmuschian and Malickian (muh-licky-in) ways.

In fact, we would pay to see all three versions, if they were to ever actually be made. And since there are no real signs of stopping this franchise — wait for the upcoming $100 million »

'Star Wars' And 'Doctor Who' Fans Fight At British Sci-Fi Con

17 May 2013 11:33 AM, PDT

Well, this was bound to happen eventually: after decades of peace between "Star Wars" and "Doctor Who" nerds, a giant brawl erupted at a British sci-fi convention in Norfolk (yeah, never heard of it either). It isn't clear how tensions were sparked, but one can only assume it was over whose basement apartment is the coolest. Apparently there was no "assault," but you can better believe some harsh words were exchanged about who is better at "Halo."

The BBC report, which is funnier than anything on The Onion today, with the added perk of being real, said that "trouble flared" at the fourth annual Norwich Sci-Fi and Film Convention at the University of East Anglia, which is organized by the Norwich Star Wars Club. Two things are immediately striking: isn't "troubles" how British people politely describe the decades of violent tension with Northern Ireland? Okay. Just checking. Secondly: this was held at a college? »

Gerard Butler to Destroy Robots With His Mind in 'The Raven'

17 May 2013 11:05 AM, PDT

Who needs "300"-style Spartan abs when you can just blow robots up with your telekinetic powers?

That's a question you'll have to ask Gerard Butler, since according to Deadline he and his abs are in negotiations to replace Liam Hemsworth as the lead in Universal's feature version of sci-fi short "The Raven." No relation to that bird crap John Cusack movie of the same name, or the Lou Reed album either.

And, no, it's not the same movie as "The Crow," either. Nice try.

Ricardo de Montreuil's 6-minute futuristic conspiracy thriller exploded the internet in 2010, looking like a legit summer blockbuster right out of the gate with its combo of well-integrated CGI, tight action and lens flares galore. The calling card announced in de Montreuil a perfect blend of Neill Blomkamp meets Michael Bay, even though its plot of dystopian government types using machines to hunt down a super-powered »

Questions and Answers With Lake Bell

17 May 2013 9:00 AM, PDT

The lovely and talented Lake Bell has been a mainstay of film and television for over a decade, stealing scenes in films like "No Strings Attached" and on television series such as "Childrens Hospital" and "How to Make it in America." This week she's an average girl out for a weekend of fun who finds herself in a battle for survival in the indie thriller "Black Rock."

We had an exclusive 1-on-1 with Bell to discuss shooting a film without bathrooms, girl talk during life or death situations, her directorial debut "In a World ... " and her continuing quest to one day play Wonder Woman.

Was the shoot for "Black Rock" as isolated as it looks? Were you guys confined to this island location?

We shot in Milbridge, Maine, which is an incredibly tiny town. Not only is it really tiny but we were sequestered to the girl's cabin and then »

'Last Vegas' Trailer: 'The Hangover' with Good (Old) Actors

17 May 2013 8:28 AM, PDT

So what would happen if you took "The Hangover" and replaced Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Bradley Cooper with some of the greatest actors of the last half century? Well, as this new clip from Yahoo! Movies shows, you'd have the first trailer for the upcoming comedy "Last Vegas," that's what.

We can't wait to see what blatantly derivative "idea" Hollywood comes up with next.

Not that "Last Vegas" looks bad. Actually, it looks kind of interesting, based solely on the fact that it features Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro and Kevin Kline as a geriatric wolfpack out for one last weekend of crazy times before the old folks home comes to get them. Their excuse for their trip to Vegas? Bachelor party, naturally.

Of course, everybody loves a winning formula, so it's only natural that Hollywood is still churning out one "Hangover" ripoff after another, from "Last Vegas »

Emily Blunt Gives 'Into the Woods' A Fairy Tale Beginning

17 May 2013 8:07 AM, PDT

When it comes to hobbies, different people enjoy collecting different things. Some people are really into coins, while others collect comic books. Your little cousin Eddie might be into Pokemon cards, while your Grandma Ethel might enjoy stamps. In the world of collecting, there's something for everyone.

And Disney? Well, as Variety is reporting, Disney is putting together an unmatched collection of superstars for their upcoming fable "Into the Woods" — and Emily Blunt is their latest mega-acquisition.

Move over, Honus Wagner.

"Into the Woods," you may recall, is the upcoming high profile adaptation of the popular 1987 Stephen Sondheim stage musical of the same name. Set to be directed by Rob Marshall (who won a raft of Oscars for his earlier Broadway adaptation, 2002's "Chicago"), "Into the Woods" tells the story of a couple — a baker and his wife — who head into an enchanted forest in order to have a curse »

Mad Max's Weekend Movie Guide: 'Star Trek Into Darkness' & More

17 May 2013 7:00 AM, PDT

"Spock, I do not know too much about these little Tribbles yet, but there is one thing that I have discovered. I like them … better than I like you." –Dr. McCoy, "Star Trek" (1967)

Greetings from the apocalypse! The trouble with Tribbles is not how cute they are but how much they multiply, or in the case of "Star Trek Into Darkness," the silly plot point for which they cameo. That's the only thing I'll spoil from that movie (besides that it stinks), but luckily there's some sweet alternatives this week that boldly go where no J.J. Abrams movie has gone before … coherence.

Pow! In Theaters

Oh boy. "Star Trek Into Dumbness" finally fulfills J.J. Abrams' five-year mission to run this franchise through a Cuisinart of stupidity. I would need a spoiler avalanche to make a proper case for how this sequel squanders classic characters and scenarios from »

'Pacific Rim' Trailer: Monsters, Robots & Jax, Oh My!

16 May 2013 12:43 PM, PDT

Could July 12th hurry up already? Ever since that footage at Comic-Con last year, we've been filled with the same kind of geeky giddiness for "Pacific Rim" that we can imagine Guillermo del Toro has been spreading all over edit bays while assembling what could very likely be an action masterpiece.

Warner Bros. has unleashed the full trailer for "Pac Rim" (hey, if that store in the mall can be abbreviated to "Pac Sun"...) today and it's filled with exactly what we wanted to see: big Shogun Warrior style robots piloted by a biker from Samcro and other soldiers fighting Godzilla style monsters. Charlie Hunnam, aka Jax Teller from "Sons of Anarchy" (and almost Thor in the Marvel movies) gets the exposition out of the way in a tasty voice over, setting up the premise for what this movie is all about: a future where humans operate huge robots to battle giant alien monsters. »

Questions and Answers With Greta Gerwig

16 May 2013 12:22 PM, PDT

Single young women of New York City, get ready for your mom to worry about what your day-to-day life is like! (And just when we'd explained to her that it's not like "Girls," too.) Everyone else, brace yourselves for your new favorite indie charmer: "Frances Ha."

Greta Gerwig plays the titular Frances, a 27-year-old modern dancer prone to scabby knees, bouts of wild movement in front of fountains and white lies about her employment status — but it's cool, she readily admits, as she's "not a real person yet."

The film, directed by Noah Baumbach and co-written by Baumbach and Gerwig, will finally hit limited release on May 17 after running the festival circuit in New York, Toronto and Telluride last fall. The agonizing six-month gap between festival screenings and the official release date, however, was better than letting the finished film sit on the shelf until spring, Gerwig told NextMovie.

Zoe Saldana Naked: 'Star Trek Into Darkness' Actress Bares All

16 May 2013 12:09 PM, PDT

Well hello there, Lt. Uhura.

Zoe Saldana, who suits up to the play the tough-as-nails U.S.S. Enterprise communications officer in this weekend's "Star Trek Into Darkness," stripped down for a cover story in this month's Allure magazine.

While the 34-year-old actress has already been the glowing subject of one of our signature Hot People Looking Hot galleries, we're unsure whether we've actually seen her looking quite this hot before.

The steamy pics weren't the only tantalizing thing about Saldana's "Allure"-ing media appearance: She also hinted that she might be bisexual. In addition to describing herself as androgynous and saying that she could see herself raising children with a female partner, she dropped another juicy tidbit, perhaps more tantalizing than her strategically-placed limbs in the pictures.

Asked by the mag if she had ever had a prior relationship with a woman, she responded: "Promise me one thing: You're »

The 15 Most Ridiculous Zombie Movies

16 May 2013 11:00 AM, PDT

View Gallery »

It's somewhat only appropriate that there are a lot — a lot — of zombie movies, as there are usually a lot of zombies (they tend to travel in hordes, ya know). For better and worse, the overcrowded (or is it overrun?) genre probably has at least ten times as many absurd installments as it does classics like "Night of the Living Dead" and "Dawn of the Dead."

And why not, really? Zombie movies are fun and cheap to make and they make themselves right at home in any scenario, whether it be in the 'hood or on a plane or in Nazi Germany or the halls of a high school.

Peruse our collection of some of the greatest examples of cinematic zombie foolishness. And keep in mind that this is probably only the beginning. »
