'Monsters University' Bags $82 Million
23 June 2013 9:18 AM, PDT
In this big bad world of ours, plenty of things are scary. War. Famine. Pestilence. Math. But it turns out that monsters actually aren't so scary after all, as Pixar's new release "Monsters University" easily won the box office this weekend with an impressive $82 million debut according to Film.com.
That was more than enough to beat out a strong challenge from Brad Pitt's new zombie epic "World War Z," which earned $66 million in its opening frame. And "Man of Steel" also held strong, bringing in $41.2 million in its second weekend of release.
For a full run down of the box office top ten, including figures for returning hits "Star Trek Into Darkness," 'Iron Man 3" and "Fast & Furious 6," head to Film.com. »

'Jobs' Trailer Presents the Dramatic Seeding of Apple
21 June 2013 11:29 AM, PDT
There's a pretty decent chance that you're reading this very article from an iPhone or an iPad or some other gadget or gizmo whose origin can be directly linked to the seeds Steve Jobs and his Apple co-founders Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne planted over in Silicon Valley so many years ago. It's quite fitting if you are, really.
Today, the rather gutting first trailer for "Jobs" debuted at Yahoo! Movies, and in addition to confirming what we already knew about the uncanny resemblance between Ashton Kutcher and the late entrepreneur, the trailer packs quite a punch about what we can expect to learn of Jobs' journey to the top of the world.
Beginning with the company's inception — including a comical car chat about what to title the to-be global empire — and building all the way up to that iconic moment when a turtleneck-clad Jobs stood before a crowd »

Dwayne 'Legally Prohibited From Being Called The Rock' Johnson In 'Terminator 5'?
21 June 2013 9:42 AM, PDT
Dwayne "No Longer Merely The Rock" Johnson has a history of entering already established franchises late in the game: He joined the "Fast and the Furious" movies 5 sequels in and signed up for "G.I. Joe" on its return to duty (hell, he was even in the sequel to the forgettable "Journey to the Center of the Earth" that starred Brendan Fraser and his questionable hair piece). This streak might continue if the rumors circulating are true and he becomes a part of the new "Terminator" movie that Megan Ellison is producing for Paramount.
According to reports in the newsmagazine-ish WWE Examiner, Johnson, who starred in one of every three movies released in the 2013 calendar year, is being courted to appear in the next "Terminator" movie, which "The Master" producer Ellison has set up at Paramount. This makes perfect sense, considering Johnson and original "Terminator" star Arnold Schwarzenegger (who is supposedly returning) have a history. »

Is This a Digital Christopher Reeve Cameo in 'Man of Steel'?
21 June 2013 8:42 AM, PDT
Goodness knows there were a s**t-ton of Easter eggs in Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel," so would it really surprise anyone if there was a throwback to the very man who first made Superman, well, so super in Hollywood in the first place?
Obviously, we're referring to the late, great Christopher Reeve ,who filled out his cape like no one else ever will, and there is an actual theory floating through the web-o-sphere today that the newest iteration pays blink-and-you'd-miss-it homage to him.
As detailed by our pals over at ComicBookMovie.com, there's a moment in "Man of Steel" when Henry Cavill's getting his steel rear tossed around by the World Engine when it looks like maybe, just maybe Christopher Reeve's face was superimposed onto Cavill's in it.
Here's the moment captured and compared alongside a shot of Reeve in character:

Welcome (Back) To Earth: 'Independence Day 2' Scheduled For 2015
21 June 2013 8:19 AM, PDT
They said it couldn't be done. They said it probably wouldn't be done. But by god the long awaited "Independence Day" sequel has been given a release date of July 3rd, 2015. And the people of earth rejoiced for they knew that there have been a lot of new monuments built in the 19 years between now and the first movie that are just ripe for detonation.
As you might recall, the original "Independence Day" starred Will Smith as a cocky fighter pilot, Jeff Goldblum as a nerdy scientist, and Bill Pullman as an improbably macho president, who all team up to take down the alien menace that is threatening earth via large, scary spaceships and worldwide mass destruction. It is unclear who will return for the sequel, although honestly, what exactly has Bill Pullman got going on? Most of the speculation has been centered around whether or not Will Smith will »

'Cinderella' Finds Its Fairy Godmother in Helena Bonham Carter
21 June 2013 7:43 AM, PDT
Okay, so it's that kind of fairy tale reboot, then. Well played, Disney.
We're officially ready to hop on-board this pumpkin chariot now that the studio's sent in Helena Bonham Carter to portray the Bippity-Boppity-Boo-ing Fairy Godmother in its new live-action "Cinderella" story.
'Cause, you know, she's magical and all.
The twisty femme joins the cast of Kenneth Branagh's re-telling of the 1950 classic to star alongside Lily James as its titular princess-to-be and Cate Blanchette as the wicked stepmother who wants Richard Madden's princeliness for her own horrible daughters (portrayed by Sophie McShera and Holliday Granger).
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Bonham's version'll be a little more haggard and at the same more involved in Cindy's life than in Disney's animated version. In fact, she'll reportedly be an incognito beggar watching out for the mistreated gal until the time is right for her to reveal all her wondrous abilities »

Greetings from the apocalypse! That may be this column's reassuring greeting each week, but damn if it hasn't proved prescient as all get-out. It seems like we can't go a week this summer without at least one movie where extinction-level events occur with pornographic intensity ("Man of Steel," "This is the End," "After Earth," the upcoming "Pacific Rim" and "The World's End"). Not that I'm complaining. Bring on the rubble, Brad Pitt!

'Drinking Buddies' Trailer: Leaving You Thirsty For More
20 June 2013 1:23 PM, PDT
The trailer has just landed for "Drinking Buddies," the boozy new romantic comedy from mumblecore pioneer Joe Swanberg (if you don't know what mumblecore is, ask your friend who lives in that really tiny studio in Brooklyn, they'll tell you) and honestly it kind of makes us thirsty for more. It's got a super winning cast (Jake Johnson from "New Girl," Ron Livingston from "Office Space," Anna Kendrick from "Pitch Perfect" and Olivia Wilde from a number of our most inappropriate daytime fantasies). The film is set in a Chicago brewery, so if you have a history of alcoholism, you might want to just watch the trailer for "The Lego Movie" another 12 times instead.
"Drinking Buddies" has a pretty conventional romantic comedy set up: Wilde and Johnson work together in the brewery, and Kendrick and Livingston are their respective partners. They go away together for a weekend, which is something »

James Gandolfini in His Own Words
20 June 2013 12:55 PM, PDT
James Gandolfini, the Emmy award-winning actor most known for playing crime boss Tony Soprano on HBO's "The Sopranos," died Wednesday at the age of 51. The actor, who was vacationing in Italy at the time and planned to appear at Sicily's Taormina Film Festival on Saturday, suffered from a fatal heart attack.
Gandolfini starred in "The Sopranos" for seven years, receiving three Emmys, three Screen Actors Guild Awards and one Golden Globe award for his performance. He also led a very successful film career, recently appearing in "Zero Dark Thirty" and "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone." He was married to model Deborah Lin and had two children: Liliana Ruth and Michael, the latter from his first marriage to Marcy Wudarski.
The indelible impression Gandolfini left on the film and TV world will remain, but he was more than just the characters he played. Many of his costars and celebrities have expressed their »

So, Brad Pitt Killed His Son in 'World War Z'
20 June 2013 11:44 AM, PDT
While Vivienne, Pax and Zahara Jolie-Pitt had been off Disney-ing it up with their ma Angelina Jolie on the set of "Maleficent," the big boy of the brood Maddox got his big screen cameo with daddio Brad Pitt in "World War Z." And while Jolie's villainess goes and puts a little curse upon Viv's Princess Aurora, poor Maddox gets absolutely laid waste to in his theatrical debut.
Yep, Maddox Jolie-Pitt, who at the tender age of 11 is the eldest of the six children, dies viciously in his own dad's movie.
Now, how many Hollywood kids can say that? (The one-uppery of the Pitt-Jolie family simply knows no bounds.)
"He gets shot in the head ... multiple times. But he gets double-tapped," Brad Pitt explained of his boy's film bit at Monday's NYC premiere. "I don't know what that says about me as a parent." Evidently, Maddox and his 9-year-old brother Pax »

Robert Downey Jr. Signs on to Play Iron Man in 'Avengers 2' and '3'
20 June 2013 11:20 AM, PDT
Well, well, well. Look who's up and avenging on this fine Thursday afternoon.
Robert Downey Jr., Iron Man himself, has signed on for two more "Avengers" movies, Marvel confirms. The studio must be more than pleased to have their Tony Stark in place: Downey's last two outings for the studio, "Marvel's The Avengers" and "Iron Man 3," have scored big at the box office. "Iron Man 3" just crossed the $400 million domestic threshold, still selling tickets a month after its initial release. "Marvel's The Avengers" occupies the number three slot for all-time gross, raking in more than $623 million domestically.
Worldwide, the two films combined have grossed more than $2.7 billion, Marvel boasted in its press release announcing Downey's return.
"I am Iron Man," begins the announcement. "Tony Stark’s famous closing line to the very first Iron Man film takes on new life today as Marvel is pleased to announce the signing of Robert Downey, »

Exclusive Q&A With Brad Pitt's Hair From 'World War Z'
20 June 2013 11:00 AM, PDT
Due to being a bona fide Hollywood A-lister for a couple of decades now, Brad Pitt has had his private life ceaselessly dissected in the public eye for almost as long, so it's easy to understand why he so rarely agrees to be interviewed. But today, ladies and gents, only on NextMovie ... we have Brad Pitt.
Well, not Brad Pitt himself, per se. We have his hair. Specifically, his spectacular hair from "World War Z."
In a first-time, one-on-one, extremely candid interview, Pitt's hair discusses the crushing weight of expectations, "Half Shell," and hot chicks sunbathing on a lakeside moonwalk.
Brad Pitt'S Hair and NextMovie's Nick Blake sit down to breakfast at a hotel on the Upper West Side.
Wow, salmon on a whole wheat bagel. Admirably healthy.
Yeah, bro. Gotta look good. Gotta shine.
Do you always get that at breakfast?
[laughs] When the mood strikes.
Sure. So "World War Z. »

Supposed 'Star Wars: Episode VII' Character Breakdowns Include Various Levels of 'Fitness'
20 June 2013 8:35 AM, PDT
As we all know, the King of Mystery (trademark pending) J.J. Abrams is taking over the "Star Wars" franchise with the as-yet-untitled "Star Wars: Episode VII," which should begin shooting sometime in early 2014, for a 2015 release. And, even though Abrams would probably like to cast it with ghosts or time traveling shape shifters so nobody will know who's actually in the movie or what it's about, it's going to need an actual, human cast. And one website, Bleeding Cool, claims to have obtained the casting breakdown.
(We should probably pause so everyone can find the biggest grain of salt they can get their hands on, and take it. Remember the plot synopsis that leaked not that long ago that turned out to be phony baloney? Could be the same thing here.)
Without further ado, here's who Disney, Lucasfilm, and Abrams are looking for in "Star Wars: Episode VII:"

'Crystal Fairy' Trailer: Michael Cera Trips Chilean Cacti
20 June 2013 8:26 AM, PDT
When Michael Cera isn't, say, dealing with the celeb-filled apocalypse a la "This is the End" or delivering the punch-lines (see what we did there?) in "Arrested Development," what does the guy do with himself?
Well, if this "Crystal Fairy" trailer is any indication, he's a total trip.
Cera stars in this one of his two collaborations with writer-director Sebastián Silva — the other, titled "Magic Magic" and also based in Chile, comes along in August — as a twenty-something expat trekking down to South America, perhaps for some answers to his life's little first world-ish conundrums.
While out partying with some natives, he runs across another former occupant of the U.S. of A. not-so-subtly named Crystal Fairy (Gaby Hoffman), and the hippie homegirl claims to have the in on some mind-altering flora in the area. So, drunkenly, digits are exchanged and Cera's Jamie gets a call from his new hook-up about that magical, »

Damon Lindelof Gives 'Man of Steel' A Thumbs Up
20 June 2013 8:14 AM, PDT
If you haven't heard of Damon Lindelof, you've surely heard of his work. (Does "Lost" ring a bell? "Prometheus"? "Star Trek Into Darkness," perhaps?)
You've also probably heard of some other movie that just came out that has sparked a debate among critics and audiences alike.
A self-proclaimed comic book fan, Lindelof recently shared with MTV Splash Page his opinions about the latest Superman installment, which has proven to be especially controversial among comic book fans.
So what did he think of Zack Snyder's reboot? "I thought it was fantastic," he said. "I think that Zack did an amazing job of essentially rebirthing the myth."
The screenwriter also had the opportunity to channel his inner fanboy on opening night.
"I know that there's some sort of controversy out there," he said. "I try to go to these movies just as a fan. I was in New York City, and »

James Gandolfini's 5 Least Tony-Like Roles
20 June 2013 7:41 AM, PDT
James Gandolfini was taken from us too soon — way too soon — at the relatively young age of 51.
Gandolfini was arguably best known for his role as Tony Soprano, the troubled head of an East Coast Mafia family, on the HBO series, "The Sopranos," which ran for six seasons from 1999-2007. The show was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series every year it was eligible, winning in both 2004 and 2007. Gandolfini was nominated six times for Outstanding Lead Actor and won thrice.
Gandolfini was excellent in the part, though his successful film career allowed him to show off his remarkable range and remind us that there was a lot more to this guy from Jersey than just, well, a guy from Jersey. Here are his most decidedly un-Tony-ish movie roles.

'Smurfs 2' Trailer: Smurfette Gets Naughty
20 June 2013 7:32 AM, PDT
Long before the Na'vi were bringing sexy back to blue on the big screen, there were "The Smurfs," peacefully villaging it up in their little mushroom manor for pretty much the entire '80s (ah, memories!). And when the evil Gargamel finally got himself enough screen time in 2011 to chase the tiny buggers outta their safe haven and into the Big Apple, things got cinematic alright.
A new trailer for "The Smurfs 2" — admit it, you've been on pins and needles ever since the credits rolled on the first "Smurfs" movie — is here, showcasing more of Gargy's diabolical plan to finally capture those pesky little Smurfs, as teased by the first picture glimpse in December.
Yep, big G (Hank Azaria), whose efforts at total smurfdom domination were thwarted by the fast actions of Smurfette (Katy Perry), Papa Smurf (the late, great Jonathan Winters) and their human pal Patrick (actually Neil Patrick Harris »
