The Hardest Part of Making Oz The Great And Powerful

Making a prequel to one of the world's most beloved movies is a daunting task, but Oz the Great and Powerful producer Joe Roth says the hardest part was getting the actors on the same schedule! "In putting the cast together, my objective was trying to get the most popular actors of the day, which is a good idea except they're always working!" Roth laid out his challenge saying that Joey King ("China Doll") is on a TV show, James Franco ("Oz")  always has "seven jobs at a time," Mila Kunis ("Theodora") is "one of the most popular actresses of our time" not to mention Michelle Williams ("Glinda") and Rachel Weisz ("Evanora")! 

As far as taking on precious, beloved material, Roth says, "The film was incredibly challenging," he says, pointing out that 1939's The Wizard of Oz, is "the most popular movie ever made and the movie most people have seen. »

Videogame Spy Hunter Tracked Down for Movie

The videogame Spy Hunter is being made into a movie and Warner Brothers has hired a guy with some kid credentials. Carter Blanchard, who worked on the classic kids TV series "Saved by the Bell" and recently wrote the script for the upcoming DreamWorks time travling teens movie Glimmer, will write the screenplay. The game is about an ex-fighter pilot who hunts down and rids the world of spies and other bad guys in his James Bond-ian Interceptor car.

The Avengers Leads 2013 Kids Choice Award Movie Nominees

The nominees for the Nickelodeon's 26th Kids Choice Awards were announced withThe Avengers leading the movie category with six nods. As usual, overlap does exist between the KidsPickFlicks Pick Awards - where kids vote for the movies and performances from kids they deem the Best - and the KCAs which are not limited to kids and more about what's popular. Nominees which are also nominated for a Pick Award have an asterik next to them. 

Kudos to Zachary Gordon, the only kid movie actor to get a nomination in the KCAs (and also a Pick Actor nominee and past Pick Actor winner)!

Lincoln's Birthday Present: Homework!

Be glad Steven Spielberg knows how to make a good movie because Lincoln just became your future homework assignment. To commemorate the 16th President's birthday on Feb. 12, DreamWorks, 20th Century Fox and Participant Films announced they will be giving a copy of the DVD to Every middle and high school in the country. Every single one. Schools in poor areas, schools in rich areas, public, private, charter...All.

This is Great news because Lincoln is a KidsPickFlicks Pick and some teens say it's their favorite movie. Unlike some movie days that turn out to be more painful than just having class (hi 1968's Romeo and Juliet), Lincoln truly makes the history lesson come to life and brings a deeper understanding of the president and of what he was up against when it came to passing the 13th Amendment.

Nicholas Hoult, Elle Fanning & Kodi Smit-McPhee are the Young Ones

Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies, Jack the Giant Slayer), Elle Fanning (Super 8) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (ParaNorman) will star in the futuristic film Young Ones. It's about a 14-year old boy using his wits to survive in a dystopian world where water is running out. Michael Shannon, who plays Zod in the upcoming Man of Steel, also stars. Jake Paltrow (Gwyneth's bro) wrote and is directing the pic which began filming on Feb. 1 in the South African desert. 

Hoult was also just cast in the World War I romance Birdsong about a young British officer who falls in love with a married older woman. Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt will helm and produce.

Eva Mendes & Saoirse Ronan 2 of Ryan Gosling's Monsters

Ryan Gosling (Crazy, Stupid, Love; The Notebook) is the latest actor to jump on the actors-turned-director trend. He'll make his feature film directorial debut with How to Catch a Monster, a fantasy noir pic with several big stars lined up to take part. Eva Mendes (Girl in Progress, Ghost Rider), Saoirse Ronan (The Host, City of Ember), Christina Hendricks ("Mad Men"), Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises) and Matt Smith ("Doctor Who") will star; Mendes and Mendelsohn starred alongside Gosling in the critically acclaimed but not yet released The Place Beyond the Pines

In How to Catch a Monster, Hendricks will play a single mom who discovers a dark underworld when her teen son finds a secret road to an underwater town. To survive, the two must dig deeper into the mystery.  

Lately, several actors are lining up to direct films including Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman.  »

Weinstein Co Sees the Gold in Vampire Academy

Update: The Weinstein Company, the production company known for winning Oscars (The Artist, The King's Speech, and this year's Silver Linings Playbook and Django Unleashed) will distribute Blood Sisters as well as future installments of the intended Vampire Academy film series.

Feb. 4, 2013 - Zoey Deutch (Beautiful Creatures and "The Suite Life on Deck") will star as Rose Hathaway in Blood Sisters, the first movie in an intended "Vampire Academy" series. Based on the novels by Richelle Mead, the first installment is about Rose and Lissa, best friends who share a psychic bond. Dimiti, a guardian (Russian actor Danila Kozlovski) who finds the girls in a secret lair and drags them to St. Vladimir's boarding school. The school trains vampires learn how to use their special powers as well as educate the half-human teens (Dhamphirs) who serve as vampire bodyguards.
