Looking Back on the Long Film History of Frankenstein

28 November 2015 6:26 AM, PST

The Frankenstein Monster is arguably the greatest monster in all fiction. There have been a few genuinely excellent films made about him, but all too many of them are pretty bad. While the latest attempt in Victor Frankenstein falls flat, Cinelinx looks at the film history of Frankenstein to see which of them worked and which of them didn’t.

The Frankenstein Monster was the invention of 18 year old Mary Shelly (wife of poet Percy Shelly) who was vacationing in Switzerland with her husband, their close friend Lord Byron and John Polidori. Incessant rain left them housebound and reading ghost stories to each other. This led to a challenge from Byron, daring them all to create the scariest story ever told. Mary Shelly seemed outclassed by her literary companions until she heard legends of a crazy scientist named Conrad Dipple who performed illegal experiments using parts of dead bodies and electricity. »

Directors' Trademarks: Denis Villeneuve

24 November 2015 6:13 PM, PST

Directors’ trademarks is a series of articles that examines the “signatures” that filmmakers leave behind in their work. This month we’re examining the trademark style and calling signs of Denis Villeneuve as director.

Denis Villeneuve is a French-Canadian filmmaker who realized his love for cinema while in college. He switched his studies from science to film and first made a name for himself directing independent movies. August 23rd on Earth (1998) was his first feature film, and it was well received at the Cannes film festival, where it earned a nomination for the best film award. His next film, Maelstrom (2000) continued the trend, winning more awards on the festival circuit. It took him 9 more years before he released another feature film, Polytechnique, which was well-received for its depiction of a current event in Canada. His breakthrough was 2010’s Incendies, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. »

Kevin Bacon Returns to Tremors for new TV Series!

24 November 2015 12:06 PM, PST

In a surprising bit of news today, word has come out that a new TV series based on the monster movie classic Tremors is in the works...Best of all, however, is that Kevin Bacon will be coming back!  Come inside to learn more.

I have a long history of loving Tremors.  Both my girlfriend and I can't seem to get enough of it.  While I've enjoyed the subsequent straight-to-dvd sequels, and we liked the most recent Tremors 5: Bloodlines release, the original film remains the best.  Truly, any time we see it come on TV, we stop what we're doing and watch it.

Kevin Bacon only appeared in the first film (though I'm sure the filmmakers tried often to get him back for the sequels), and his absence is sorely missed.  That's what makes today's news so damn exciting!  EW broke the news (which has since been confirmed everywhere »

Focal Point: Gaming And Giving Thanks (Redux)

24 November 2015 11:21 AM, PST

With the deluge of video game releases this time of year, finding time for gaming can be hard, epsecially with family based holidays looming ahead.  It's even More difficult when you throw kids in the mix, as evidenced by this week's comic!

It's that special time of year, where you gather round with family and stuff yourselves silly with all manner of good food.  It's also that time of year where I'm insanely busy and had to resort to another Redux comic strip to make up for lost time.  I change it up pretty significantly from last year, cutting out 2 whole panels and re-arranging some wording.  Besdies which, I Did post a new strip last week online, though I didn't feel it directly related to anything we cover on the site.  As such, I decided against posting it up on the site.  Regardless, there's a brand spanking new comic of mine out in the world. »

First Trailer for Barbershop: The Next Cut Tackles Humor and Gang Violence

24 November 2015 8:47 AM, PST

It's been a decade since the last Barbershop hit theaters, but the whole crew is back for a new outing that's about more than saving their shop this time around: it's about saving their neighborhood.  Come inside to check it out!

Sure, the Barbershop films aren't for everyone, but they certainly cracked me up when they released.  More than just humor, the films provided a unique look at the culture and approached genuine issues in their own way.  Based off of this first trailer for Barbershop: The Next Cut, they're looking to do the same thing once again:

Gang violence is a problem, and has been for a while.  It's a tough subject to broach in a comedy, but I'm digging the way it's being handled so far.  Let's hope they manage to keep it going for the full film.

It’s been more than 10 years since our last appointment at Calvin’s Barbershop. »

Fox Removes Fantastic Four 2 From Release Schedule

24 November 2015 8:38 AM, PST

20th Century Fox has officially dropped Fantastic Four 2 from its future movie plans.  What could this mean for this disappointing franchise?  Let's discuss.

Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot was arguably the most disappointing superhero film of the 20th century, it's tied with 2003's Hulk with Eric Bana.  Fans and movie critics alike claimed disappointment and boredom.  We even made a review video, explaining everything that went wrong, you can check it out here.

Suffice to say, we were all really surprised in hearing that there would be a sequel.  However, after an apparent walk about and many meditation/reflection sessions, 20th Century Fox appears to have had a change of heart.  Late yesterday, Fantastic Four 2 was removed from 20th Century Fox's release date lineup.  Making the future for this long mired franchise to become unclear.

This could, though, be the best thing that could ever happen for the franchise. »

Examining Hollywood Remakes: True Grit

23 November 2015 2:40 PM, PST

Remakes…Where would Hollywood be without them? In the third of our continuing weekly series on Hollywood remakes, it’s time to look at one of those very, very rare remakes that is actually better than the original. This week Cinelinx looks at the Cohen Brother's True Grit.

Sometimes an actor can seem like the perfect casting for a role, and have you thinking “I can’t imagine anyone else in this role”, but then a remake comes along and the new actor even outdoes the original one. This week, we’re going to look at the way proper casting can actually elevate a remake above its predecessor. The original 1969 version of the Western True Grit starred Hollywood action legend John Wayne—winning the only Oscar of his long career—whereas the 2010 remake stars one of the most versatile actors of the modern era, Jeff Bridges. Yes, it’s the Dude replacing the Duke. »

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 Kills It Opening Weekend

23 November 2015 1:51 PM, PST

Anyone who knows even the smallest amount about movies knew that the finale to The Hunger Games series, Mockingjay Part 2, was going to rule the box office opening weekend.  However, you may not have realized just how badly it would wipe the floor with the others.  Come inside to check out the box office breakdown.

Here’s a quick recap of the totals for this past weekend:

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

The Peanuts Movie

The Night Before

The Secret in their Eyes

Although the film did not meet, or exceed, the totals of its predecessors (approximately $20 million below Part 1) for whatever reason  the strong start suggests it could hold on to the top slot at the box office for a few weeks more at least.  Be sure to check back in next week to see how it fairs against the newcomers!

Take it Slow With a New Clip From Disney's Zootopia

23 November 2015 9:17 AM, PST

Disney's upcoming animated film Zootopia has a new 'trailer' out today, showing even the world of animals has it's slow moments.  Come inside to check it out!

This isn't really a trailer, despite how Disney keeps wanting to say that it is.  It's more of a clip, showing a scene from the film.  While it doesn't give you much information on the overall story, what's shown is still pretty funny:

I know, it's goofy...but this clip had me laughing pretty hard.  It's a simple gag, but something about the animation style and the voice acting really sells it for me.  If the rest of the film can be this fun, Disney may have another winner on their hands.

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from »

Vin Diesel Reveals New Riddick Movie and TV Series in The Works

23 November 2015 8:43 AM, PST

Over the weekend, Vin Diesel updated fans on the future of his Riddick character, revealing the title of the next film, along with an upcoming television series set in the same universe.  Come inside to check it out and see what he had to say!

The Chronicles of Riddick franchise hasn't had the easiest road.  After the second film's release, things seemed to be going well for the franchise, with a solid anime release and even a successful video game.  Then things went quiet, and the road to Riddick (which hit in 2013) was a long one.  Many never thought it would happen, and even when it was set to begin filming, funding completely dropped!  Somehow, everything came together and Riddick released, and was generally more enjoyable that the previous film.  It's been a couple years, however, and it's been quiet on the science fiction/action series...until now.  If you're »
