Stephen Chbosky to write and potentially direct Disney’s Prince Charming

According to THR, filmmaker Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Wonder) has signed on to write the script for Disney’s live-action fairy tale reimagining Prince Charming, with a view to directing the project.

Prince Charming has been scripted by Matt Fogel (Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son) and is described as a “revisionist take” on the character who appeared in the likes of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella, exploring the life of the iconic prince from the point of view of his brother, who never quite lived up to the family name.

The film reunites Chbosky with Disney, having worked as a writer on the live-action Beauty and the Beast, as well as Wonder producers David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman of Mandeville Films.

Disney has several live-action adaptations of its animated classics in the works, including Dumbo, Aladdin and The Lion King, »

Latest rumours on The Batman claim it will be a Justice League sequel with or without Ben Affleck

I’m struggling to think of a project which has had as much rumour and speculation surrounding it as Warner Bros. and DC Films’ planned Dark Knight solo movie The Batman.

For months now, it seems a day hasn’t gone by without some report claiming to drop “insider information” on the status of the film, and that stepped up a gear this past week when Ben Affleck revealed that he was yet to sign on for the movie, and looking to “segue out” of the role.

To bring you up to speed, a rumour emerged a few days ago claiming that Reeves has identified Jake Gyllenhaal as a replacement for Ben Affleck, and that he is considering two ideas for his trilogy – one which would serve as a prequel to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the other as a standalone series of films.

Well, we now have »

Thor: Ragnarok closing in on $750 million worldwide

Despite some stiff superhero competition this weekend from Warner Bros.Justice League (which debuted to $281.5 million around the globe), Marvel’s latest superhero blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok continued its impressive box office run as it approaches the $750 million mark worldwide.

The Taika Waititi-directed blockbuster has pulled in $738.1 million, making it the ninth Marvel Cinematic Universe title to cross the $700 million mark. It had already surpassed Thor: The Dark World’s $644.6 million to become the biggest Thor movie to date, and currently sits in eighth place in the list of highest-grossing McU movies behind 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy on $773.3 million.

Ragnarok could potentially become the third McU movie of the year to hit $800 million globally after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863.6 million) and the year’s highest-grossing superhero movie Spider-Man: Homecoming ($880.1 million).

Why The Flash movie shouldn’t be Flashpoint

Anghus Houvouras on DC’s plans for Flashpoint…

So Justice League is finally out. Audience reception is slightly more favorable than Batman v Superman but not the all-encompassing crowd-pleaser that was Wonder Woman. The U.S. box office is lukewarm. Whether or not Justice League turns out to be a success will be up to the International Box Office.

If we’re being honest, the lower-than-expected box office is a fly in the ointment for Warner Bros. The process of creating the DC Extended Universe has been a gaffe-filled blunder-fest. Man of Steel was a financial success that polarized fans of Superman. Both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (the theatrical cut) and Suicide Squad were unmitigated nightmares in terms of coherence and reception. We might need more than a sentence to describe the insane debacle that was the DC Extended Universe in 2016.

Batman v Superman should have made over a billion dollars worldwide. »

The Punisher Season 1 Episode 3 Review – ‘Kandahar’

Liam Hoofe reviews the third episode of Marvel’s The Punisher

Marvel’s The Punisher has gotten off to a flying start, with the show’s opening two episodes both delivering stellar outings for Frank Castle and his buddies. The show’s third episode ‘Kandahar’ is another step up for the series, delivering the show’s most complex and brutal outing yet.

The focus of this episode is very much on the main character’s backstories. The last episode, ‘Two Dead Men’ ended with Frank tying Micro to a chair and knocking him out. This episode spent a lot of time exploring both men, providing two very different backstories about two men who have a lot more in common than they think.

It was established very quickly in the last episode that Micro had a clear interest in Frank but what exactly that was wasn’t made clear until the end of this episode. »

Video Game Review – Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2

Thomas Roach reviews Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2…

Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 is the latest game in from Lego and Travellers Tales. The story here revolves around Kang the Conqueror travelling though time and dimensions stealing parts of cities to make a super city – Chronopolis. The plot introduces a new range of Marvel characters that we haven’t seen before in previous games, as well as alternate versions from different realities.

The game has a decent story and allows you to take control of so many cool characters – all with unique abilities and aesthetics. Like with every Lego game, each character has a unique set of powers that allows you to overcome obstacles in each level. There are plenty of levels with different lengths and difficulty and a cool hub world to explore. The game also allows you to play co-op which I didn’t get a chance to do with someone, »

Fantastic Beasts producer on casting Jude Law as Dumbledore in The Crimes of Grindelwald

This past week, Warner Bros. unveiled an official image from the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel – now titled Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald – which included our very first look at Jude Law as the legendary wizard Albus Dumbledore.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts producer David Heyman discussed Law’s casting, stating what qualities he feels that the actor brings to the iconic role:

One of the reasons we chose Jude is he has many of the qualities we find in Dumbeldore in the Potter films. He’s got authority, he’s got a twinkle in his eye, he’s sometimes a bit elliptical. So you have that but also have this youthful energy and jubilance. So he brings that twinkle, mischief, authority, and power, but at the same time brings far more youthful energy to the film. Sony enters early talks to acquire 20th Century Fox

Last week it was reported that The Walt Disney Company had held talks with 21st Century Fox about acquiring a number of its film and television assets, including the movie studio 20th Century Fox.

Although those talks are said to have broken down, Fox isn’t finding itself short of suitors. Comcast – the parent company of Universal – has been circling, and now comes word from The Washington Post that Sony has also been in early, informal discussions.

Acquiring 20th Century Fox’s assets – including franchises such as X-Men, Fantastic Four, Avatar, Planet of the Apes, Alien, Predator and Die Hard – would certainly be a smart move for Sony, which has struggled with its own franchises, and recently lost the rights to James Bond.

Should Sony acquire Fox, it would also potentially open the door for the X-Men and Fantastic Four to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Sony already having »

Justice League suffers lowest opening weekend box office of the DC Extended Universe

Warner Bros.’ long-awaited DC team-up Justice League has suffered a rather tough time at the U.S box office in its opening weekend, with the film grossing $96 million across the Friday-to-Sunday period.

While it’s obviously ridiculous to call a $96 million opening a disaster (it is an astronomical number after all), the film – which brings together DC’s most iconic characters – had been tracking between $110 million and $120 million, and instead debuted to the lowest opening weekend of the DC Extended Universe to date, and the second lowest opening weekend of 2017 for a superhero movie.

For comparison within the Dceu, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opened to $166 million, followed by Suicide Squad on $133.7 million, Man of Steel on $116.6 million and Wonder Woman on $103.3 million. In terms of the year’s other superhero blockbusters, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 leads the way with $146.5 million, followed by Thor: Ragnarok on $122.7 million, »

Dwayne Johnson hopes to break the video game adaptation curse with Rampage

Earlier this week, Warner Bros. unveiled the first trailer for Rampage, an adaptation of the 80s arcade game, with Dwayne Johnson taking on the lead role of a primatologist out to save the world against a mutated giant gorilla, werewolf and lizard.

As always when a new video game adaptation is announced, the question is raised whether this could be the movie to break the dreaded “video game adaptation curse” – and that’s something The Rock has addressed on social media, stating that he hopes to have learned his lesson from 2005’s Doom.

Thank you guys for the trust.

I’m ultra focused aka “f*cking obsessed”;) to overcome the “video game adaptation curse” and delivering something great w/ #RampageMovie.

Plus, remember, I made and failed w/ Doom years ago. Lessons learned my friend. https://t.co/eq2t7H6rF0
