Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume Xxxix Review

Brad Cook reviews Mystery Science Theater 3000 Volume Xxxix…

MST3K Volume Xxxix is a bittersweet release because it marks the end of an era. Yes, this is Shout! Factory’s final new volume of Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes. (They’ll keep re-releasing the old Rhino sets, however.) They say on their site that it’s the “almost certainly, probably definitely, maybe unquestionably final collection of never-before-released episodes,” so maybe there’s still some hope of more volumes in the series. Maybe?

Fittingly, this collection includes the show’s final episode, which skewers the 1968 spy film Diabolik, which was produced by Dino de Laurentiis. That one probably would have been worthy of a retrospective featurette, but the subject was understandably pushed aside in favor of Showdown in Eden Prairie: Their Final Experiment (10 minutes), which looks back on the making of the final episode.

The series finale sees Mike and the »

Ray Fisher discusses a deleted Cyborg scene from Justice League

If you kept up to date with all of the marketing material for Justice League and have now seen the final film, chances are you’ll have noticed that a couple of Victor Stone’s pre-Cyborg scenes ended up on the cutting room floor.

In addition to the above shot, the trailers also featured a glimpse of Victor playing football, and it seems those weren’t the only two scenes of the character pre-accident that were shot for the movie.

“There were some things that you’ll probably end up seeing later on, that didn’t make it into this version of the film,” actor Ray Fisher tells Gamespot. “There’s a scene with Victor Stone, when he still was Victor Stone, and his mother, that was really special to shoot.”

Fisher also spoke about the changes to the film as a result of the reshoots, stating that: “You’re shooting and testing, »

Video Game Review – Star Wars Battlefront II

Shaun Munro reviews Star Wars Battlefront II…

Though it was easy to be optimistic about EA and Dice’s follow-up to 2015’s enjoyable-yet-malnourished Star Wars Battlefront reboot, the end result is one of the most depressingly, dispiritingly botched sequels to a hit Aaa game this generation. From its infuriating, predatory progression system to a campaign that fails to live up to EA’s chest-thumping hype, Battlefront II is a stylishly efficient shooter with remarkably little behind its slick visage.

The previous game was lauded for its stringent adherence to the tone and aesthetic of Star Wars while heavily criticised for its piecemeal suite of content, and EA’s marketing push ahead of this sequel’s release was incredibly effective in arguing that the follow-up was going to be a content-rich apology for its predecessor’s foibles.

Sadly, that’s not really the case at all, and EA’s decision not »

Is Justice League’s Steppenwolf the worst superhero movie villain ever?

Anghus Houvouras on whether Justice League’s Steppenwolf is the worst superhero movie villain ever…

Yes. Totally. I don’t even think this is debatable. I’m curious to see if anyone steps up to defend the opposing position. Marvel and DC villains have been notoriously terrible. You can name all the good/interesting villains on one hand.

Loki (Thor movies, Avengers) – A no-brainer. Tom Hiddleston has been a gift to the McU.

Zod (Man of Steel) – Not everyone liked Michael Shannon’s mega-intense portrayal of Zod, but I found him interesting.

Zemo (Captain America: Civil War) – Another polarizing choice. For me, the idea of a man seeking revenge for the collateral damage cause by super heroes is interesting and Daniel Bruhl’s quiet, cerebral interpretation of the character was well done.

It’s kind of frightening that there have been over 20 Marvel and Dceu movies and after three villains »

Denis Villeneuve says his Dune movie won’t take inspiration from David Lynch’s adaptation

Following his work on Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is set to return to the sci-fi genre for his next project, an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic novel Dune.

Villeneuve’s adaptation won’t be the first time that the 1965 book has been brought to the screen, with David Lynch helming a rather divisive take on the material in 1984, which was slammed by many critics and fans of the book, but has since developed its own cult following.

Speaking to CinemaBlend, Villeneuve has revealed that he won’t be taking any inspiration from Lynch’s film, and is instead looking to make “the adaptation of my dreams”.

“It will not have any link with the David Lynch movie,” said Villeneuve. “I’m going back to the book, and going to the images that came out when I read it. I mean David Lynch is one of the best filmmakers alive, »
