At 19-years-old, Michigan native Luke Jaden is already working on his fourth film, with his third, “Wolf Who Cried Boy" (featured on this site in May, with a cast that includes Torrey Wigfield, Oscar nominee Barkhad Abdi, and Dwight Henry), currently in post-production. Titled "King Ripple," and starring other names you'd be familiar with, like Keith Stanfield ("Short Term 12," "Selma," and Don Cheadle's upcoming Miles Davis film), as well as the previously mentioned Torrey Wigfield (“Lost River”), Allie DeBerry (“A.N.T. Farm”), newcomer Callaghan Belle, and  Luke Jaden himself, the film is described as a "post-apocalyptic, »

Now We Know for Certain Whether Ava DuVernay Will be Directing Marvel’s ‘Black Panther'

Well you can now stop wondering if Ava DuVernay will be directing Marvel’s film version of Black Panther. The official answer is that she will not be, and that comes straight from Ms. DuVernay herself. In an interview for Essence published yesterday (Here), she revealed that that she has passed on the project, because she and Marvel had different creative viewpoints on how to approach the project. "I think I'll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be. Marvel has a certain way of doing things, and I think they're fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me," Ms DuVernay said. And she added that: »

Watch Bree Newsome Tell Her South Carolina Story (Video)

3 July 2015 8:45 AM, PDT

I'm sure you're all aware of filmmaker and activist Bree Newsome's bold act of defiance in South Carolina last week; if not, what rock have you been hiding under? A Google or Twitter search of her name will get you all caught up.  Or you can also watch her tell the whole story on any of the TV shows she appeared on yesterday, which was apparently media day for her. She was interviewed by Amy Goodman for Democracy Now, by Chris Hayes on MSNBC, by CBS News, and several others, seemingly ending the day with an appearance on Larry Wilmore's late-night show, "The Nightly Show," on Comedy Central. She even now has her own Wikipedia page. I've embedded the »

Revolution Cinema: 5 Films to Put on Your "To-See" List This July 4th Holiday Weekend

2 July 2015 5:20 PM, PDT

In consideration of the political upheaval that took place during the last half of the 18th century, known as The American Revolution, that would lead to The Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776, marking the formation of a new sovereign nation, which called itself the United States of America - a date we now celebrate annually, and will be honoring this weekend, ahead of a long holiday weekend... I thought I'd have some fun and highlight a few of what I'd call "revolution films" that don't necessarily have anything to do with the American Revolution, but that I think join it in spirit, and that you might want to add to your to-see list to watch over the »

Cross-Cultural British Comedy 'Dough' Will Open San Francisco Jewish Film Festival (Trailer)

2 July 2015 1:54 PM, PDT

Browsing through the lineup of the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival (which was humorously accidental, given what happened because I did), I came across this feature film, titled simply "Dough," which will be the festival's opening night film, on July 23. A UK-Hungarian co-production, and drected by John Goldschmidt from a script penned by Yehuda Jez Freedman and Jonathan Benson, "Dough" is described as a cross-cultural comedy, set in London’s East End, and tells the story of an old Jewish baker (played by Jonathan Pryce) whose failing bakery business gets an unexpected boost when his young Muslim apprentice (played by Jerome Holder) accidentally »

Paula Patton, Terrence Jenkins Will Engage in Battle of the Sexes in 'The Perfect Match'

2 July 2015 10:46 AM, PDT

This rom-com concept is so overdone and, quite frankly, doesn't excite me at all, I'm sorry to say. I'm sure films like this have their audience, so I can't dismiss it entirely. But, really, unless there's some surprise twist, or the filmmakers plan to turn hackneyed ideas on their heads to create something fresh and different, can we please move on from this kind of unimaginative, unoriginal storytelling?  Terrence JenkinsPaula PattonKali Hawk and Joe Pantoliano will all star in a Queen Latifah/Flavor Unit-produced rom-come titled "The Perfect Match." Bille Woodruff is directing from a script written by Dana Verde, Gary »

Watch New Full Length Trailer for Season Two of Relationship Dramedy Web Series, 'Smoke and Mirrors'

2 July 2015 6:09 AM, PDT

I admit that I really like the work of Atlanta-based filmmaker Artemus Jenkins and writer and director KarynRose Bruyning. They have a laid back, sort of off-center, quirky style to their work. Nothing is over the top or in your face. It doesn’t “come to you”, you have to come to it. And either you get into their own particular vibe, or you don’t. And together they have created and star in the web dramedy series "Smoke and Mirrors," which dealt with relationships, and all things, small and big, that either makes them work or don’t. Now with season 2 about to begin on July 15th, they’re keeping the plot details a secret for now, except to say that they “don’t want to »

Ytasha Womack has definitely established a name for herself over the past few years, as a leading proponent and advocate of the concept of Afrofuturism, with her acclaimed, best-selling book, “Afrofuturism: The World of Black Sci-Fi & Fantasy Culture,” as well as her latest sci-fi book, “Rayla 2212”. And she will be one of the Guests of Honor at the 23rd annual Diversicon in Minneapolis, later this month, which is an annual sci-fi convention created to further "social opportunities and to encourage the multicultural, multimedia exploration and celebration of Sf by those within and outside of the traditional Sf community". "Hunt What You Hate" - Check Out Judith Shekoni's 'Heroes Reborn' Character Motion Poster

1 July 2015 5:19 PM, PDT

The Haitian, as played by Jimmy Jean-Louis, will return for NBC's "Heroes" reboot, titled "Heroes Reborn." Jean-Louis joins the previously cast Judith Shekoni, a newcomer to the "Heroes" universe, apparently playing a character named Joanne, as I learned today from the series' Facebook page, where I lifted the motion poster released this afternoon, which is embedded below. Although what her skills are, assuming she's actually one of the "heroes," and what her overall involvement in the story this reboot will tell, is, are still a mystery. Her motion poster does read "Hunt what you hate," and she's carrying a gun, with a sly stare; so »

Also Anthony Anderson’s own "brassy" mother (as the press release describes her), Doris, will be the official scorekeeper and asking questions of her own, "not to mention embarrassing her son every chance she gets." ‘Little White Lie' - Engrossing Look Into One Family's Silence, Secrets & Denial of Race - Now Streaming on Netflix

1 July 2015 8:43 AM, PDT

Lacey Schwartz's "Little White Lie" is now streaming on Netflix, after an international film festival run...                   When I was growing up, a lot of kids would ask each other: “What are you mixed with?,” especially when they saw someone who couldn’t be easily placed into the categories of white, black, Latino, Asian, etc.  The question, particularly among my black peers, would become as common as asking someone their name. My peers would spout off racial and cultural groups- Indian, Creole, black. Yet, in a society so defined by racial identification, what happens when a child who is clearly “mixed” to others, is »
