Lorraine Toussaint has joined the cast of Ava DuVernay's Mlk drama Selma, playing Amelia Boynton, a leading civil rights activist who played a key role in efforts that led to passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and who was the first African American woman in Alabama to run for Congress. She helped Martin Luther King Jr. establish his headquarters and helped plan and lead the march from Selma to Montgomery that came to be known as "Bloody Sunday." I say it's a like a Middle Of Nowhere reunion, because Toussaint and Selma star David Oyelowo, both co-starred in DuVernay's last feature effort, Middle Of Nowhere. A Handful Of Fresh Official Photos From Denzel Washington/Antoine Fuqua Collab, 'The Equalizer'

Fuqua and Washington don't go "superhero" in the movie. They shot believable action sequences, often performed by the 59-year-old Washington himself. And his director points out that the actor can truly bring it as he demonstrates each training day in the boxing gym. "He really hits those mitts," says Fuqua. "And you imagine what he'll do to you. You might underestimate him. That's your first mistake." Fuqua even was restrained in his use of guns in the film for fear that would detract from Washington's physical performance. "His hand-to-hand work is pretty nasty when the monster comes out," says Fuqua. "We used what was around him. You'd be surprised what he can do with a corkscrew. You'll »

Fundraising Campaign For "Heroic" Film ‘The Antidote Of Life’

Filmmaker Olayinka Hassan - who is currently a screenwriting and directing graduate student at Columbia College Chicago, and who will be graduating next month - is currently in the process of completing her film The Antidote of Life. The film deals with a successful, overworked mother who “learns that, without her family's love and support, money holds no value, as she rebuilds her relationship with her child and aunt." It was inspired by the fact that, as Ms. Hassan herself says, "women, especially Black women can be heroes too," and that she "was tired of seeing films that mainly focus on the men being the hero." She went on to say »

Here's the premiere episode of a new web series created and directed by Katherine Murray-Satchell, titled The New Adult. I typically would summarize new series that are emailed to me, in my own words; but I think hearing directly from the creators themselves, may have more of an immediate impact on potential viewers, since doing so would mean a much more personal experience.  So here's what Katherine Murray-Satchell sent to me: I am an independent filmmaker and have recently completed a web series pilot that will be launching on Thursday.  I have a great deal of respect for Indiewire's Shadow and Act page, and would love your feedback on the show.
