Prof Stephen Hawking And Jimmy Carter Commend Progress To End Neglected Diseases

Professor Stephen Hawking highlighted the pioneering work of his father, Frank Hawking, at a moving event to mark one billion treatments for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) hosted by UK non-government organisation (Ngo) Sightsavers in Cambridge, UK (12 December).

Professor Hawking said: “Collaboration between partners across the world over the last five years has accelerated us closer to the elimination of NTDs than ever before.”

NTDs are a group of infections that affect one in five people globally. They are most prevalent in developing countries causing severe and lifelong impairment. Frank Hawking was one of the first to research and develop a treatment for an Ntd known as lymphatic filariasis (Lf), which is still widely used today.

Professor Hawking said: “Throughout his career [my father] made some important discoveries. He believed in humanity and our ability to find solutions to the most pressing problems he witnessed. »

Harlem Globetrotters Announce One-Hour Hoops For The Troops Game Special

As part of the Harlem Globetrotters' 75th anniversary celebration of entertaining United States servicemen and women, and military personnel around the globe, the team will showcase its dedication in a one-hour television special to be aired on the Espn family of networks.

The “Hoops For The Troops Game” will premiere on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. Est on ESPN2, with a special encore airing on Sunday, Dec. 31 at 3 p.m. Est on Espn. The Elders Meet President Macron, Applaud French Climate Leadership

The Elders visited Paris from 11-12 December to meet President Emmanuel Macron for a discussion on global challenges from climate change to conflicts across the Middle East, and to participate at the One Planet climate summit.

Kofi Annan, Gro Harlem Brundtland, Ban Ki-moon, Lakhdar Brahimi and Mary Robinson met President Macron at the Elysée Palace on 11 December.

They discussed climate action with the President, welcoming the French-hosted One Planet summit on 12 December as a chance to accelerate momentum and ambition in global climate policy to safeguard commitments made at the COP21 Paris summit in December 2015.

The Elders and President Macron also focused on conflicts in the Middle East, the Korean Peninsula and Myanmar; how to manage refugees and migration; and the need to reinforce the multilateral system underpinning international relations.

Keating has completed two sponsored walks across Ireland to bring attention to the Marie Keating Foundation, the charity his family set up after his mother died of breast cancer.

Sea Shepherd Unveils New Anti-Poaching Vessel

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, the direct-action marine organization, unveiled its newest vessel, the M/V Sharpie, at a press conference, Monday, December 11th at 11:00 am at the 5th Street Marina in Miami, Fla.

Spotlight: Faith Hill's Charity Work

Faith was the first-ever recipient of the “Sheltering Hand Award”, given in recognition for her work with the Tennessee Baptist Children's Homes.

Hill built a bird house for an auction to benefit the W O Smith Music School, which provides music lessons to low-income families.

She and her husband, Tim McGraw, took truckloads of relief items down to the Gulf area after Hurricane Katrina. They also performed a charity tour, giving all the proceeds to the Neighbor’s Keeper Foundation, a group the couple formed to help victims the disaster.

Ford’s overwhelming passion is the environment. In 1991, he was introduced to Conservation International, one of the world’s leading environmental research groups, and was deeply impressed with the intellectual capacity of its directors. Founded in 1987, Conservation International provides a fund for scientists in 30 countries to identify and overcome biodiversity threats. It focuses its efforts on tropical wilderness areas, marine areas, and major wetlands, and since its inception has donated over $100 million to conservation partners around the world.

Ford joined the ranks of Conservation International as a board member, and soon became vice chairman. He became actively involved in the organization’s design and growth, and now sits on the Executive Committee.
