James Franco defends his love of selfies in New York Times essay

29 December 2013 3:00 PM, PST

"Selfie" was declared the word of the year for 2013 by the Oxford Dictionaries, and for good reason. The use of the social media self-portrait sent stars like Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and James Franco to new levels of popularity and infamy, and according to Franco, they were posted with clear purpose.

The former "Freaks and Geeks" star wrote an essay for The New York Times titled "The Meaning of the Selfie." Though it is a look at the entire concept of a selfie, the essay gets really interesting when Franco explains his stance on the celebrity selfie.

"I can see which posts don't get attention or make me lose followers: those with photos of art projects; videos telling the haters to go away (in not so many words); and photos with poems. (Warning: Post your own, and you'll see how fast people become poetry specialists and offer critiques like 'I hate you, »

'Gma's' Robin Roberts comes out as gay, reveals Amber Laign is 'long time girlfriend'

29 December 2013 2:30 PM, PST

"Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts has publicly come out as a lesbian. In a letter posted on her Facebook page, she addresses her sexual orientation by acknowledging her "long time girlfriend" named Amber Laign.

"I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together," Roberts writes in her post, which reflects back on what she is grateful for in her life since her bone marrow transplant in 2012.

As CNN's Brian Stelter notes on Twitter, "That message is the first time that @RobinRoberts has spoken publicly about her sexual orientation." Stelter wrote the book "Top of the Morning," which discusses the anchors on ABC's "Gma" and NBC's "Today." Roberts has been out to her family, friends and coworkers for years, but has never publicly acknowledged her sexuality.

An ABC News spokeswoman tells Variety that Laign and »

Netflix TV shows and movies expiring on Jan. 1: What are they?

29 December 2013 2:00 PM, PST

The New Year is a time to look forward at all the exciting things that are coming ahead, but is also a time of loss. That loss, of course, is with Netflix, as the streaming service will be saying goodbye to a number of previously-available TV shows and movies.

Since Netflix no longer advertises when various titles in its library are expiring, one Reddit thread (via Vulture) collected them for your pleasure. It's worth noting that some of these titles may not permanently disappear, and might return as soon as a day or several hours after being removed as per Netflix's contract agreements.

Fortunately for all your TV-loving folks out there, not many television shows are being removed. The ones on the chopping block are "The Kids in the Hall," the original "Dark Shadows," "Mr. Bean," "Saturday Night Live The 2000s" and "Perfect 10 Model Boxing: Vol. 1." So if any of »

Sherlock Holmes is now in the public domain

29 December 2013 12:00 PM, PST

Sherlock Holmes has entered the public domain. After being published by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887, the series is now no longer under copyright. Or most of it isn't, at least.

Federal judge Ruben Castillo ruled that all of the Sherlock Holmes stories written before the year 1923 have entered the public domain. The 10 or so stories written after that date -- which include storylines like Dr. Watson's second wife and Sherlock Holmes' retirement -- will still remain under copyright.

This decision was made after author Leslie Klinger wrote the book "The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes" and contributed to the anthology "In the Company of Sherlock Holmes," and was then threatened by Doyle's estate. Klinger went to get a judicial declaration saying that, by copyright law, the Sherlock Holmes stories belong in public domain.

The traditional law is that copyright life ends 95 years after publication or after the life of the »

Blake Shelton responds to Miranda Lambert divorce rumors: Couple is 'so excited'

29 December 2013 11:00 AM, PST

The latest batch of divorce rumors surrounding Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert are no more true than the ones that have come before, but that doesn't mean "The Voice" judge doesn't like playing around with the speculation. After National Enquirer had a cover story about "Blake & Miranda $100 Million Divorce!" Shelton took to Twitter to respond.

"Wow!! @mirandalambert and I are so excited about our 100 million dollars!!! Who knew you could make so much money just by divorcing?!!" he tweets.

Of course, this is all a joke. Shelton kept the humor going when a fan asked him what he is going to do with all the money he gained from this alleged split.

"Mostly just crack and hookers ... Oh and Taco Bell!!" he quips.

Divorce rumors have been dogging Shelton and Lambert in tabloids for a while, but have no fear. The adorable country couple is just as strong -- and self-aware -- as ever. »

'Agents of Shield' star Iain De Caestecker gets his monkey

29 December 2013 9:40 AM, PST

Ever since the "Marvel's Agents of Shield" episode "The Asset," it's been a long running joke that star Iain De Caestecker wants a monkey. Now, for his 26th birthday, he finally got one.

Though De Caestecker's big day was on Dec. 19, the Brit got his present a few days late. Marvel Chief Creative Office Joe Quesada and comics artist Paul Mounts designed De Caestecker an awesome piece of art (above) that shows his "Agents of Shield" character Fitz finally getting his monkey -- though of course it's a little more scientific than that, in pure FitzSimmons style.

Though this is only Fitz getting a monkey and not De Caestecker, that is still a dream he would like to see realized. "Iain genuinely wants a monkey on the show, and so he wanted one so bad that they wrote in that Fitz wants a monkey," costar Chloe Bennet recently told Zap2it. »

Khloe Kardashian reminds fans forever is 'temporary': Is Lamar Odom her target?

29 December 2013

Khloe Kardashian is keeping herself levelheaded in the wake of her divorce from Lamar Odom. The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star, who has a tendency for posting inspirational messages to her social media, put up one that some thought could be directed at Odom.

"We always seem to forget that everything is temporary. I mean, yeah okay, it crosses our minds once in a while and we might do something daring and out of our comfort zone," a photo on her Instagram (below) reads. "But when that moment passes it gets stored away in the back of our minds and we continue living our lives as if there are plenty of tomorrows waiting for us. We postpone feelings to another day, another week, another month, another year. Everything is temporary. Forever is an empty promise."

Kardashian's caption for the image is a simple request: "Live in the now."

Kim Kardashian shows North West's matching Kanye West Lamborghini gift

28 December 2013 11:00 PM, PST

Kim Kardashian's daughter North West is luckier than she knows. After already receiving more designer clothes than your average person owns in a lifetime, the 6-month-old now has a luxury car to match her father.

The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star posted a picture to her Instagram that shows baby North now has her own vehicle. And it's not just any car, of course. The image reveals North received a mini Lamborghini that's a double of father Kanye West's Batmobile-style ride.

"Like father like daughter," Kardashian writes.

These vehicles retail at Neiman Marcus for about $395, but considering the Kardashians' tendency to be lavish, chances are it was actually more expensive. North is sure to be very pleased with the gift ... once she is old enough to realize what it actually is. »

Ufc 168 video: Anderson Silva breaks his leg vs. Chris Weidman

28 December 2013 9:59 PM, PST

During the Ultimate Fighting Championships, Anderson Silva had only lost one fight up until now -- to Chris Weidman, back in July when Weidman knocked out Silva in a fight when Silva was doing what some would call showing off.

Saturday (Dec. 28) the fight ended with a much more gruesome outcome. Silva was defeated by Weidman when, roughly 90 seconds into the second round, Silva kicked against Weidman and Weidman blocked. But the block resulted in a broken leg for Silva. Many on Twitter were calling it the most gruesome Ufc injury of all time.

Weidman said after the match, "The goal is to get your knee up and allow them to make contact with their shin right there. As soon as he hit me with that kick and moved backwards I knew right away. There's no real excitement in a fight finishing like that because you never want to see anyone get hurt like that. »

Anderson Cooper shares mom Gloria Vanderbilt oral sex story on CNN

28 December 2013 8:00 PM, PST

Of all the people to share oral sex anecdotes on cable news, Anderson Cooper isn't one many would place high up on the list. But that's exactly what the CNN anchor decided to do while discussing the past year in a segment.

When Dan Savage mentions that Rob Ford's scandal was his favorite of 2013, he notes. "I love a good cunnilingus joke on the evening news." That's when Cooper decides to deliver by telling a personal story about his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt.

"My mom once wrote a romance memoir about the men she had dated -- and I use that term loosely," he explains. "And she described one guy she was currently dating -- my mom was 85 at the time -- as the Nijinsky of cunnilingus, and she made me proof-read the book. I was like, 'Mom, I don't know much about modern dance.'"

Savage quips back, "Or cunnilingus. »

Zachary Quinto pranks Jesse Tyler Fergsuson, gives his Benedict Cumberbatch impression: Watch

28 December 2013 6:00 PM, PST

What happens when you get Zachary Quinto and his "Margin Call" costar/close friend Susan Blackwell together for a sleepover? Hint: it involves prank calls.

The pair did an interview for Blackwell's Broadway.com segment Side By Side, and it involved a whole lot of adorableness while discussing Quinto's recent adventures, which include "American Horror Story," "Star Trek Into Darkness" and "Sesame Street."

The best moment comes when Blackwell and Quinto prank call Jesse Tyler Ferguson and pretend he has ordered a stripper for his Tie The Knot pop-up shop. Also being pranked is "Smash" actor Christian Borle, who recently appeared in "The Sound of Music Live!"

Later in the interview, Ferguson texts Quinto back. "Was that Cherry Jones?" the "Modern Family" star asks of Quinto's "The Glass Menagerie" Broadway costar.

Blackwell seems to be as big a Benedict Cumberbatch fan as the rest of us, and admits that if »

GLAAD responds to Phil Robertson's 'Duck Dynasty' return

28 December 2013 12:00 PM, PST

In a somewhat surprising move, A&E announced on Dec. 27 that it had changed its mind and reversed Phil Robertson's "Duck Dynasty" suspension. The network decided to let the Robertson patriarch return to the reality series when it starts filming again in the spring.

A&E says in a statement that it made the decision after "consulting with numerous advocacy groups." Even with that as the case, GLAAD has a response for the network about the message this sends to people about A&E's views on African Americans and homosexuals.

"Phil Robertson should look African American and gay people in the eyes and hear about the hurtful impact of praising Jim Crow laws and comparing gay people to terrorists. If dialogue with Phil is not part of next steps then A&E has chosen profits over African American and gay people -- especially its employees and viewers," GLAAD says in a statement. »

Piers Morgan suffers cracked wrist, bruised rib after brutal cricket showdown: Watch

28 December 2013 10:30 AM, PST

CNN's Piers Morgan had a bizarre show of strength during an Australian cricket showdown. He appeared in front of 2,000 Australian cricket fans only to be pelted by bowler Brett Lee.

The point seemed to be for Morgan to try to hit one bowl out of seven from Lee. As Morgan had been taunting Australian cricket fans for a while about how he was sick of English cricket players being beaten by Australian ones, he didn't have many fans in the audience. Lee in particular seemed out for blood as he repeatedly hit Morgan with the cricket ball.

Morgan didn't hit a single one of the bowls, but not for lack of trying. Though he was offered a doctor's examination partway through the showdown, he shook off the offer and instead made comments like "Didn't feel a thing" and "Bring it on."

Adrenaline might have gotten 48-year-old Morgan through the ordeal, »

28 December 2013 9:00 AM, PST

Adalind might be having some troubles in love and romance on "Grimm," but the woman behind the villain is having no such issues. Claire Coffee reveals on her Instagram that she and her boyfriend of two-and-a-half years, Chris Thile, tied the knot on Dec. 23.

"Merry Christmas, y'all. #BlackberryFarm #hitched," she posts along with the above photo.

Coffee walked down the aisle in a 1937 vintage lace wedding dress that she picked up from a boutique in Portland, Ore. (where "Grimm" is filmed). Thile wore a custom-made Against Nature suit.

As Coffee tells Us Weekly, only 20 guests attended the ceremony, which was held in the Smoky Mountains at "gorgeous and rustic" resort Blackberry Farms. Coffee's sister Abbie Coffee was officiant. As Thile is lead singer of Punch Brothers, he and Coffee had Bon Iver guitarist Rob Moose play Bach on the violin as the bride walked down the aisle.
