He made history as the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL, and while Michael Sam hasn’t yet become the regular player he had hoped to be, and is currently a free agent, his story remains an inspiration, and a new documentary called Michael Sam, debuting tonight at 9pm Et/Pt on Own: Oprah Winfrey Network, tells that story. (Originally planned as a multi-part series, Michael Sam was transitioned into a 90-minute documentary after shooting was postponed to allow Sam to focus on football.) Following the film, Oprah will speak exclusively to Sam in his first TV interview since being cut … Continue reading →

Sequins, Singing & Struggling for Power: Branson Famous Premieres on truTV Monday

At my very first Channel Guide blog meeting, the Editor in Chief, Barb, asked what show I’d like to get my feet wet with. “What kind of shows are you interested in?” Before I could say “Not reality TV —pleasepleasePLEASE not reality TV,” the first episode of Branson Famous landed in my lap. And I was fully prepared to hate it. I am, by no means, a highbrow kind of person — one look at my DVR would tell you that. I just find reality TV to be formulaic, scripted and, well, not grounded anywhere in reality. It is by … Continue reading →

27 December 2014 10:00 AM, PST

To get you primed to ring in 2015, ABC will present two animated New Year’s favorites (and a bonus Charlie Brown special) back-to-back on Dec. 29. First in the lineup is the 1986 Peanuts special Happy New Year, Charlie Brown in which our intrepid, yellow-shirted hero wonders if he should forgo the gang’s New Year’s Eve festivities to finish Tolstoy’s War and Peace before school resumes. Toting the tome with him from Lucy’s pre-party dance class to Marcie’s and Peppermint Patty’s New Year’s Eve bash in hopes of combining business and pleasure, Charlie finds himself distracted by dreams of welcoming … Continue reading →

2004 Indonesian tsunami remembered on Ngc

26 December 2014 4:00 PM, PST

Ten years ago, on Dec. 26, 2004, a tsunami devastated 14 countries and took a quarter of a million lives — the deadliest recorded tsunami in history. Anyone around at that time surely recalls the worldwide shock at the destruction, as well as the global humanitarian response it inspired. Now, a new National Geographic Channel (Ngc) special will look into that past event and see if it gives us any clue for the future. The Next Mega Tsunami, premiering Dec. 26 at 9pm Et/Pt on the network, finds scientists searching for clues along the tsunami-raaged coasts of Indonesia with the hope … Continue reading →

26 December 2014 5:00 AM, PST

Hallmark’s daytime Emmy-nominated series, Home & Family is always entertaining viewers with its mix of cooking segments, celebrity interviews, Diy projects, musical performances and more. The series is the only lifestyle series on cable to produce a new show every weekday. Now the talk show can add another accomplishment to it’s list: celebrating its 500th episode. I asked Cristina Ferrare and Mark Steines about memorable moments from their first five hundred episodes and about their dynamic chemistry. How does it feel to be about to shoot your 500th episode? Cristina: It’s been 500 episodes of just pure fun! I was … Continue reading →

24 Hours of A Christmas Story simulcast on TBS and TNT for first time

24 December 2014 10:00 AM, PST

In 2014, Turner Networks is airing its 18th annual “24 Hours of A Christmas Story” programming event starting Christmas Eve at 8pm Et/Pt and continuing until 8pm on Christmas Day. The running of the beloved 1983 film for 12 consecutive showings has become a holiday tradition for many; so much so, that this year, along with its usual airing on TBS, the marathon will also be simulcast on sister network TNT for the first time. This marks a homecoming of sorts for the film on TNT; when Turner Networks started this marathon in 1997, it originally aired on TNT before … Continue reading →

Girlfriends Guide to Divorce Recap: “Rule 426: Fantasyland: A Great Place to Visit”

23 December 2014 8:58 PM, PST

Before I get started on this week’s Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce recap, I want to pose a few questions, based both on reactions to the show around the office and around the web. How many of you never-divorced folks are still tuning in? If not, why not? And how many of you (especially you ladies) who have been through the uncoupling ringer recognize every emotional gut-punch Marti Noxon puts in her scripts — regardless of these women’s income, lifestyle and social standing — and find the show refreshingly honest and cathartic for it? And, given that, how odd is it … Continue reading →

The Coworkers’ Guide to Girlfriends Guide to Divorce episode 4

23 December 2014 8:00 PM, PST

In which Ryan Berenz (11 years into Marriage No. 1, two preschool boys) and Lori Acken (nine years into Marriage No. 2, four grown kids) debate a few quagmires revealed in Girlfriends Guide to Divorce Episode 4 “Rule 426: Fantasyland: A Great Place to Visit.”  • Is Fantasyland a great place to visit? Lori: Given that my fantasies currently involve stuff like a 92% raise, black pants with no cat hair and just one flat surface in my house staying crap-free for more than an hour … I’m willing to go there. Fantasies one hopes will completely change one’s life? The distance between entry and exit is always … Continue reading →
