Watch Adam Ciolfi’s Brilliant Stop-Motion Short “Broken”

20 October 2014 5:32 PM, PDT

Just when you think crappy CGI, twist endings, and cheap scares have overtaken the world of mythic film storytelling, someone comes along with a practical wonder capable of encouraging even the most cynical of monster fans. This week, that wonder is Broken, a ten-minute short film directed by Adam Ciolfi that utilizes stop motion in the kind of unsettling way I haven’t seen since Adam Jones’ creepy productions of Tool videos.

It’s a dark, reverse take on the Frankenstein myth; starring a robot who doesn’t quite understand the value of life (is artificial intelligence life? you ask) and his monstrous creations.

The visual production alone is worth your time. The story itself provides for a surreally fantastic, albeit heartbreaking, ride. Time for a little existential questioning.
