Four years after lauded New Zealand noir mini-series “Top of the Lake,” Jane Campion, who was cheered at the Cannes 70th anniversary celebration as the only woman director to win the Palme d’Or (1994 Oscar-winner “The Piano”), is back in the festival with “Top of the Lake: China Girl.” She and returning co-writer Gerard Lee debuted all six SundanceTV episodes on May 23rd to raves.

Robert Pattinson Reveals How He Embraced The Streets of New York (and Dodged Paparazzi) Shooting ‘Good Time’

Robert Pattinson made his name in “Twilight” and now capitalizes on his global bankability by chasing distinctive character roles and indie auteurs. This time it’s  Josh and Benny Safdie’s Cannes Competition entry “Good Time” (A24, August 11) as he takes on the canny older brother who looks out for his impulsive, hulking sibling (Benny Safdie).

At the official Cannes press conference following the screening, he announced that he’ll star in “Parrots of Summer,” the upcoming film from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ciro Guerra (“Embrace of the Serpent”) as well as another film with David Michôd, with whom he worked on “The Rover.”

In the can is “Damsel,” a Zellner brothers western with Mia Wasikowska, which is seeking distribution; coming up are movies with French filmmaker Claire Denis (father-daughter space drama “High Life”) and “Christine” director Antonio Campos.

Sofia Coppola’s ‘The Beguiled’ Wows Cannes While Nicole Kidman Calls Out Lack of Female Directors

It’s so far so good for Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled” at Cannes, which played well for the press on Wednesday morning. The movie is a gorgeously shot battle of the sexes led by the formidable duo of Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell (who both star in another competition entry, “The Killing of a Sacred Deer”) along with Coppola’s “Virgin Suicides” star Kirsten Dunst and “Somewhere” star Elle Fanning.

Writer-director Coppola reenters the Cannes spotlight with her high-profile adaptation of Don Siegel’s 1971 Clint Eastwood Civil War drama, based on the 1966 Thomas Cullinan novel. About two years ago, Coppola’s production designer Anne Ross urged her to remake the movie, a well-reviewed flop when released. Audiences weren’t ready for Eastwood’s tall, dark, and handsome soldier to be manhandled by a school full of vengeful women. »

Willem Dafoe as Vincent Van Gogh in ‘At Eternity’s Gate’: Julian Schnabel Gives Us An Exclusive First Look

If anyone can show us something we haven’t seen before about Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh, it’s Oscar-nominated painter-filmmaker Julian Schnabel, who announced at Cannes that he will direct “At Eternity’s Gate” starring Willem Dafoe (who also stars in Director’s Fortnight entry “The Florida Project”) as the world’s most acclaimed Post-Impressionist painter, who died at age 37 before he was recognized for his gifts.

“I’ve been working on it for a couple of years,” said Schnabel on the phone from Montauk. “It has to do with trying to make a work of art. By making a film about him, I might shed a little light on what it is to be doing what he’s doing, who he really was, and what his issues were, what somebody needed to do to do what he did, and what he’s not going to do.”

With ‘The Beguiled,’ Sofia Coppola Seeks Cannes Redemption with a Southern-Gothic Remake

With her sixth feature, “The Beguiled,” Sofia Coppola returns to Cannes in the main Competition. It’s her first time since 2006, when the reception for royal costume drama “Marie Antoinette” evolved from a  scattering of boos to became a reported misfire. That’s the power of the Cannes echo chamber. Her visually sumptuous and witty $40 million studio movie earned a standing ovation at the public screening and a range of reviews, but only made $60.8 million worldwide — not nearly enough to make it profitable.

Coppola had better Cannes luck with her smaller-scaled first feature, the dreamy literary adaptation “The Virgin Suicides” ($10.6 million worldwide). It starred Kirsten Dunst and broke out of Director’s Fortnight with critics’ raves. Her Tokyo-set Bill Murray-Scarlett Johansson two-hander “Lost in Translation” ($117 million worldwide) debuted in Venice on its way to Coppola’s Original Screenplay Oscar.

‘Billions’: How Gender-Neutral Star Asia Kate Dillon Elevated Season 2 To Emmy Contender Status

Showtime’s Wall Street drama series “Billions” came up empty Emmy nominations morning last July. Although the show’s first season was both popular and well-reviewed, there’s a lot of shows that fit the same bill.

This year, things could be different thanks to Asia Kate Dillon’s performance as Taylor Mason. Sporting a shaved head and buttoned-down men’s clothes, the actor portrays a whip-thin Mensa-level analyst who was born female and identifies as non-binary.

Showrunner Brian Koppelman learned about non-binary fluidity from his kids. “I was fascinated,” he said. “It seemed to fill something Dave [Levien] and I were looking for, a character to come in from the external world, an atypical intern that Axe recognizes could be helpful.”
