NBC, CBS win premiere week as Fox slips

Premiere week ratings are in: NBC and CBS have reasons to celebrate while Fox’s numbers are far from utopian.

NBC led the first week of the 2014-15 broadcast season by a wide margin in the key adults 18-49 demo, while CBS was tops among total viewers. Though NBC’s demo victory is more enviable from an advertiser perspective, CBS has the important bragging point of being the only network to show a gain among 18-49 compared to last fall—CBS was up 9 percent in the demo, while NBC, ABC and Fox were down between 3 and 9 percent each (full charts »

'Grey's Anatomy' sneak peek: Things get even worse between Meredith and Maggie

If Grey’s Anatomy fans expected a warm sisterly embrace between Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Maggie (Kelly McCreary) when the ABC medical drama returned for season 11, they were sorely mistaken. Instead, the unaware Meredith butted heads with the new head of cardio, ultimately leading to a nasty confrontation that will undoubtedly color Meredith’s reaction when she eventually finds out the truth that Maggie is her half-sister.

“It’s going to get worse before it gets better,” McCreary tells EW. “Maggie’s a professional, but they push each other’s buttons professionally. They have different approaches on how to do things. »

'Castle' premiere ratings up

Rick Castle may be missing, but ABC’s Castle made its presence known on Monday night. The veteran procedural managed to rise in the ratings for its seventh season premiere despite heavy competition from NBC’s The Blacklist and the season premiere of NCIS: Los Angeles. Following up on last season’s cliffhanger, Castle returned to 11.3 million and a 2.4 rating among adults 18-49, up 9 percent from last fall. Moreover, this was Castle’s biggest premiere rating in three years. One big caveat: These numbers could come down in the more accurate afternoon nationals since ABC was preempted in several markets »

'Makers: Women in Comedy' director recalls interviewing Joan Rivers

The decision to open Makers: Women in Comedy with the words of Joan Rivers was made before the comedian died earlier this month, but when it airs Tuesday, the documentary will act as a sort of tribute to her pioneering status.

“She set up the film perfectly,” co-director Heidi Ewing told EW. “She’s a lion tamer. It’s all about being in charge and she just delivered. It’s also just a nod to the great Joan Rivers, setting it up as her being the matriarch.”

Ewing (who directed and produced the documentary with Rachel Grady) had been trying »

David Fincher will direct the entire first season of Utopia, the HBO series he is producing with Gone Girl’s author Gillian Flynn. The duo announced their plans to adapt the British TV conspiracy series in February, with Fincher directing Flynn’s scripts, but it wasn’t clear how just much Fincher would be behind the camera. (For Netflix’s House of Cards, the other major show Fincher produces, he directed only the first two episodes of season one.)

But Fincher told the Guardian that he intended to helm the entire first season. “I like the world of it,” he said. »
