'The Mentalist': How the 'Red John' mystery captured the imagination, then lost it

24 November 2013 10:16 AM, PST

It was Rebecca that made me pay attention to The Mentalist. I had never seen the CBS crime drama starring Simon Baker until the eighth episode of season 2. “His Red Right Hand” was the one where a secretary in the Sacramento offices of the California Bureau of Investigation shot Sam Bosco (Terry Kinney) and two other agents on behalf of a serial killer — Red John, a brilliant phantom with a blood-drawn smiley face insignia, powerful influence and connections, and a scores of similarly brain-sick and unnervingly gleeful devotees.

In the last act, an assassin — presumably Red John himself; we never »

24 November 2013 9:22 AM, PST

Katie Couric’s next move appears to be online.

An ABC News executive who requested anonymity because talks aren’t complete said the veteran news anchor has an opportunity at Yahoo that is too good to pass up.

Couric has been working at ABC News, but published reports have said that Yahoo is seeking her to host an interview show to be aired on the company’s website.

A spokesman for Couric declined comment.

Couric is in her second season on an ABC daytime talk show, which is not expected to be renewed. »

The trailer was revealed during BBC America’s Doctor Who special (talk about that here), along with a teaser trailer for Sherlock season 3 (see the Sherlock teaser here). Christopher Gorham, who was on Ugly Betty before taking the lead on Covert Affairs, will guest star in the 12th episode of the current Once Upon season. As usual, producers are keeping quiet about the details of the role. All we’re told is Gorham plays an “important character in the life of Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison).”

Those housewives better make some room, because a much younger crowd is about to take over Beverly Hills. At least in reality TV terms.

Meet Dorothy, Morgan, Roxy, Brendan, and Jonny, aka, the #Richkids of Beverly Hills. They’re just like normal 25 year olds…oh who are we kidding? There isn’t anything normal about washing your hair with Dom Perignon or having a bar tab of over $10,000.

The show is loosely inspired by the popular Tumblr page “Rich Kids of Instagram”, where star Dorothy Wang was first discovered by casting directors. Now she and best friend Morgan Stewart are welcoming E! »

Longoria plays the role of Isabelle Gutierrez, who becomes Lisa’s new best pal. However, the glow of new friendship may flicker out quickly as liberal Lisa discovers that Isabelle’s political animal is an elephant, not a donkey. Worse yet, they are opponents in the campaign for second-grade class rep. You can preview the Lisa-Isabelle debate from “The Kid is All Right” (Fox, 8 p.m., Sunday) in the clip below. »

'American Horror Story': Jessica Lange on why next season will be her last -- Exclusive

22 November 2013 11:38 AM, PST

It’s hard to imagine American Horror Story without Jessica Lange—she has appeared in all three seasons after all. But Lange has confirmed that next year’s fourth season will be her last. “It ends up being a lot of time during the year being committed to something,” admits the actress. “I haven’t done that for a long time. It’s like doing a stage play between the rehearsal and the run. This is a 6-month commitment every year. That will be four years in a row. I want to have more time to myself I guess. Once »

NBC's Thursday lineup falls to sad new low

22 November 2013 10:42 AM, PST

When looking at Thursday’s prime-time ratings, NBC’s numbers bring to mind an apocalyptic wasteland; some smoldering ruinous city, once glamorous, where a devastating bomb has crumbled the skyline into gray ash.

Or, in NBC’s case, four bombs: Parks & Recreation, Sean Saves the World, The Michael J. Fox Show and (sorry, know you love it) Parenthood. Every show hit or tied its all-time series low rating last night. This is NBC’s lowest-performing Thursday this season. In fact, this matches NBC’s worst performing in-season Thursday in the network’s history with first-run regularly scheduled programming. These are »

'Breaking Bad': Watch Bryan Cranston and Dean Norris film the 'tread lightly' scene -- Exclusive Video

22 November 2013 10:06 AM, PST

When Breaking Bad returned for the second half of its final season back in August, everyone seemed to have a pretty good idea of how the Walt-Hank story line would unfold. Still reeling from that bathroom-reading revelation in the midseason finale that Walt (Bryan Cranston) was actually the crystal meth kingpin that he’d been tracking, Hank (Dean Norris) would methodically plot to take down his brother-in-law over the next few episodes before some sort of showdown occurred toward the end of the season.

Everyone was wrong.

Instead, in the season 5.2 premiere, Hank wound up confronting (and cold-cocking) Walt in »

'Girls' season 3 trailer: Jokes! Hugging! Hannah twerking on a tombstone! Video

22 November 2013 9:48 AM, PST

Forget that “teaser for a teaser for a trailer” stuff — though Lena Dunham said on Instagram that the trailer for Girls’ third season would drop Sunday, HBO actually posted it online today. Even better news: It looks pretty funny!

Fans (and/or hatewatchers) may remember that last season, Girls got dark enough to make some viewers wonder whether the show was even a comedy anymore. From the lighthearted tone of this trailer, though, it seems as though season 3 may mark a return to season 1-style levity. Unless, of course, it’s all a clever ruse, and the promo’s meant »

The aXe-Factor: Simon Cowell's renewal odds are better than you think

22 November 2013 9:18 AM, PST

Fox renewed The X Factor by early November during its first two years on the air.

So far this fall … [crickets].

The industry’s widespread assumption is that the bombastic competition series will be canceled due to low ratings. That’s been our assumption, too. Yet we’re hearing Factor’s fate is not yet sealed. In fact, sources say Fox and Factor producers have started renewal discussions on a potential fourth season. The negotiations are for a reduced number of episodes (more on that later). Mind you, these talks are just that — talks — and no guarantee of a pickup. But »

Who better to reveal the secrets of Doctor Who than an actual doctor? Meet Doctor Who expert Dr. Piers D. Britton. He might sound a Doctor Who expert we just totally made up, but he’s a real person who wrote a book on Doctor Who titled TARDISbound and teaches a class on the iconic show at the University of Redlands in California (if you’re a hardcore Doctor Who fan who had to sit through dull college electives, you’re probably feeling a surge of envy for Redlands students right now). Presenting a teaser for the 'Girls' season 3 teaser -- Video

22 November 2013 6:35 AM, PST

Sorry, everybody — we’ve officially entered a world where teasers of teasers of trailers for actual works of entertainment are a thing. But hey, at least this one has a shot of Adam Driver shirtless.

Last night, Lena Dunham took to Instagram to post a shortened version of the teaser for Girls season 3. (The full-length preview of a preview debuts Sunday.) Though the whole thing is only 15 seconds long, it contains pretty much everything you’d expect from a full episode of Girls — namely, Hannah being self-absorbed, Marnie looking gorgeous but also like an asshole, Shoshanna making us wish she had more screen time, »
