Pass the doughnuts: Which TV show has the worst cops?

Small towns are so much more interesting on television. Their quirks are quirkier, their drama is more dramatic and their faults somehow make them more endearing. But there’s another feature we’ve spotted in the hit small town dramas we’re currently obsessed with: The cops in these series aren’t all that skilled at, well, being cops.

Case in point: Bates Motel. Sure, the cops of White Pine Bay, Ore. are corrupt, but they also don’t even seem to know how to work a crime scene. The first thing that the Sheriff did upon arriving at a »

When worlds collide: J.J. Abrams visits the set of 'Downton Abbey'

(Let’s hope he didn’t drive there.)

While gallivanting around Europe to promote Star Trek Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams apparently stopped by one of Britain’s most famous fictional estates: Downton Abbey, home of enough ominous musical cues and mysteries to be, well, a J.J. Abrams creation. Here’s the man himself, mixing something in the kitchen under the watchful eye of Mrs. Hughes (a.k.a. actress Phyllis Logan):

'The Voice' and sob stories: Struggling with reality competitions and grief

Last night, R&B singer Vedo took the stage during The Voice’s knockout rounds. He sang Bryan Adams “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” and impressed Usher enough to advance to next week’s live rounds. He also talked a lot about his mother, who recently died — something Usher acknowledged in his comments after the performance; and something that’s been mentioned on the show every single time Vedo appears. I wrote about how this makes me feel in last night’s recap: a combination of annoyed, deeply moved, and deeply apathetic. But many commenters disagreed. I still feel that way, »

'Divergent': The movie's most highly anticipated scenes -- and a few we're worried about

Veronica Roth’s Divergent is not a book that comes off as unfilmable. From its opening pages to its dramatic, action-packed conclusion, this dystopian tale seems like it was always designed to be turned into a movie — which may be why Summit Entertainment bought the book’s film rights months before the novel was even published.Given this, it’s not tough to pick out five scenes from Divergent that I can’t wait to see rendered on the big screen. (Caution: Book spoilers follow, of course.) Specifically:Tris’s big jump into Dauntless The story’s first real action setpiece — minus the aptitude test, »

PopWatch Playlist: First-time TV tunes that struck a chord -- Listen

Last night’s flashback-tastic New Girl episode, “Virgins,” was a treasure trove of music to set the mood — some songs more successfully than others — as the loftmates looked back on their first sexual encounters. Anchoring the eclectic mix (which ranged from Sublime to Boyz II Men and even figured in Lisa Loeb), Ellie Goulding’s “Anything Could Happen” kicked in during a fan-fulfilling scene between Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel).

It got us thinking of some of our favorite first-time anthems from shows of yore. Below, our ultimate Spotify playlist of coupling tracks!

Zach Galifianakis's 'Saturday Night Live' promos: Things are gonna get weird -- Video

Good news for admirers of Zach Galifianakis’s non-Hangover work: The comedian’s offbeat sensibility is alive and well, if these promos are any indication.

The “Between Two Ferns” host — and returning SNL emcee– spends this two and a half-minute clip showing off his teen heartthrob-inspired nail art, spoonerizing the names of famous musicians, and otherwise engaging in delightful but pretty strange “goof-abouts” — all as Jason Sudeikis tries in vain to understand what’s going on. So yeah, pretty much par for the course. Drink it in, Galifanatics:

I can’t wait to see what he’ll do with his “skitches. »

Netflix reacts to May 1 purge of online content

Netflix was quick to respond today to the exodus of streamed content resulting from expired licensing deals with MGM, Warner Bros., and Universal that cost the online service access to several James Bond movies, Adaptation, Cruel Intentions, and Reality Bites, among hundreds of others. Yesterday, Netflix sought to calm subscribers mourning the loss of Adam Sandler’s Big Daddy, explaining that “this ebb and flow happens all the time” and promising users 500 new titles today, including Mission: Impossible 2. Today, they were quick to trumpet some of the new offerings.

Tons of new titles arrive on Netflix today, incl. Pulp Fiction, »

Ke$ha's breasts have written some of her favorite songs -- Video

We imagine last night was a far cry from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner for Conan. Remember when Ke$ha talked about having sex with a ghost on his show? Well, her return appearance last night was equally amazing. Decked out in a dress covered in tiny Conan faces, Ke$ha talked about how she gets her inspiration for songs. She simply leans over the piano and lets her breasts tickle the ivories.

”It started as, like, a joke, but then it seriously has produced some of my favorite songs on my new record,” the singer/songwriter said.

'American Idol': Name your Top 4 Power List...

….Again! Has your ranking changed since last week?

Despite the judges’ manipulative efforts to convince viewers Amber Holcomb is both a “current. hot. Now.” superstar and their new best friend, she still landed in the bottom two along with Candice Glover. Will top-two vote-getters Kree Harrison and Angie Miller suffer from fans assuming they’re safe?

My Power List is below — leave your own in the comments….

4. Amber Holcomb The judges played her up way too much last week, and that’s gotta be turning people off. Plus, she’s landed in the bottom two most often out of the four. »

Robert Downey Jr. straps on his movie promotion suit for 'Daily Show' interview -- Video

Anyone else got a sneaking suspicion that Robert Downey Jr. and Tony Stark are actually the same person? They’re both super-rich bad boys with troubled pasts. Both excel in the same fields as their accomplished fathers. And both have a habit of treating interviews like one big joke, only occasionally trading confident quips for shots of insight.

Exhibit A: Rdj’s Daily Show appearance last night, in which the Iron Man 3 star blithely said that being an Avenger is like being a Beatle and joked that the original Superman didn’t really make him believe a man could fly, »

10 takeaways from Amanda Knox's interview with Diane Sawyer -- Video

Amanda Knox’s life story reads like a Lifetime movie — which it later became. But now that the American exchange student accused of murdering her roommate in Italy is going back on trial for the third time, she sat down with Diane Sawyer to tell her side of the story.

Knox’s name first hit headlines when she was accused of stabbing her roommate, Meredith Kercher, 47 times in their Italian home and subsequently sentenced to prison for 26 years after being found guilty. But after three years in prison, Knox was released on an appeal. Now, after completing a memoir titled Waiting to be Heard, »

'Star Trek' Poster Project: Do you want 'Spock's Brain' on your wall?

Acclaimed artist/designer Juan Ortiz continues his great commission to express his Star Trek love by creating retro pulpy movie posters for every single episode of Star Trek: The Original Series. This month’s batch includes “Requiem of Methuselah” (season 3, episode 19), a Trek gloss on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, in which the crew of the Enterprise becomes afflicted with Adhd Rigellian Fever and has to score some Ritalin Ryetalyn from an immortal named Flint; and “Spock’s Brain” (season 3, episode 1), which is considered one of the stupidest episodes of St:tos ever. 'New Girl': First!

All right, Newbies, as I suspected many weeks back, tonight’s episode was a doozy. Without further delay, we’ll get into it a little bit early so we can enjoy all the regrettable decisions, overly liberal lubrication, and intentionally awful wigs (oh the wigs!). But first, Spoiler Alert! For everyone who hasn’t seen “Virgins,” stop reading now. For those who have, let’s get it on — and be sure to check out my behind-the-scenes interview with Jake Johnson and Liz Meriwether later tonight after the west coast catches up. Onward!

Willie Nelson's 80th Birthday: A video celebration

Maybe we’re feeling a bit reverent in light of losing George Jones last week, but allow us to celebrate Willie Nelson’s 80th birthday today with some of our favorite video clips.

“Funny How Time Slips Away.” I’ve posted this clip before. I watch it at least once a year for the looks on Bobby Bare’s and Kris Kristofferson’s faces.

VH1 Storytellers with Johnny Cash. At 11:57, Willie breaks a string playing the intro to “Crazy.” Johnny hands him his guitar, and Willie tests it out. “First time that guitar’s been played,” Cash cracks.

Martha Stewart wants You to help choose her new online dating profile picture

Remember a few days ago when Martha Stewart jokingly said she might want to begin online dating?

Well, the Internet took that and ran with it, and now, it seems, Stewart is 100% interested in meeting guys online. The Facebook page for the magazine Martha Stewart Living has just released two dueling photos of the domestic icon, and have announced fans can vote on which look they prefer. The winning image will be her actual Match.com profile picture.
