She's been with us since most of us opened our eyes to Indian cinema whether it was playing the victim to Srk's wrath in Baazigar or the empowered Sanjana in Dhadkan. Shilpa Shetty is one actress who the lovers of Indian cinema had loved and adored for years. On November 24th, Bollywood gave away one of its own leading ladies as she walked down the aisle, or shall we say walked around the fire as they do in Indian weddings, with the man who has swept her off her feet, Raj Kundra.
Of course the excitement did not end with the news of the big day but in fact it grows from that moment onwards as Indian weddings entails multiple days of celebrations, traditions, food, fashion, dance and music. You're all surely dying to know, who were the big names that appeared on the guest list, who wore what, and »
Column: 26/11 - Kurbaan Hua
Just a few days ago it was 26/11, a black day in Indian history. A day we will and can never forget. A day on which we think of all the innocent people who lost their lives, our heroes of the police and army force and the question why. Why did this happen?
A friend of mine had asked me to go and see a movie with her. I agreed to see Kurbaan, though I had seen it before, because a second viewing might offer me something new. While I was in the theatre, it hit me. I was watching Kurbaan on 26/11. I have never been good with dates, but sitting there and listening to the word "terrorists" coming out of Vivek's mouth made me think more about what happened on 26/11. I started to listen more carefully to his words in easily one of the most effective scenes of the movie. »
Newsweek Rebuttal
Once again, I find myself stepping up to defend Bollywood from the stereotypes thrown around by the Western media. This time, the culprit is Newsweek magazine with this article called "Bollywood Gets Real" by Jason Overdorf.
The crux of his argument is that Bollywood is ditching the candy-floss mass entertainers for grittier fare and he uses the success of Kaminey and Dev.D to back up his argument. The article is illustrated with a picture of the (white) Kalki Koechlin dolled up as the prostitute Chandra in Dev.D.
First of all, let me list out the highest grossing Bollywood films of 2009 so far and their genres for you, just to give a sense of perspective.
1. Love Aaj Kal - modern romance
2. Wanted - Southie masala remake
3. Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani - straight up Bollywood romance
4. New York - middlebrow thriller
5. Kambakkht Ishq - raunchy masala comedy
6. All the Best - »

The conflicted character of Ayaan Anand is a modern tragedy as he becomes part of the criminal stream, even as he searches for truth and happiness.
Ada is a film of the moment, as it compels us to re-examine the youth-crime phenomenon in a very poignant and freshly told story.

Sameera Reddy Takes The Lead

With Katrina Kaif confined to bed with a touch of jaundice, Sameera Reddy has been taking the lead in promoting De Dana Dan alongside Akshay Kumar - and she's full of praise for the anarchic script and production style of the director Priyadarshan: "The film is simply outstanding and is easily one of the funniest films that I have seen," she says, "I don't know how he manages to surpass his own effort in each of his films."
Sameera is on a wave at the moment - not only with De Dana Dan but also with her Kollywood movie Vaaranam Aayiram. "People looked at me in an altogether different light after this film," she explains, "It turned out to be one of the biggest hits of my career. I have got so much love from this film."
Sameera also promises her legions of fans that she will never give »
